Kuwaiti investors see third pipe promise
(old news - 10:50AM Monday Sep 25 2006)
tags: business · BPL
Pittsburgh-based broadband over powerline provider BPL Global has received $25 million in equity investments, largely from a consortium of Kuwaiti-based companies. In the summer of 2005, the company launched a BPL trial in the Pittsburgh suburb of Monroeville under the auspices of Duquesne Broadband. Despite ample press coverage BPL is having a hard time getting any real traction in the residential broadband market - providers promising that each new year will be the one to bring the technology into the mainstream.

Maybe the Kuwaiti companies needed to record a loss on the books for tax purposes?

Isn't 25 million from a group of Kuwaiti companies kinda like us giving the begger a buck?

Maybe they wanted the BPL guys to go away and play quietly

nah, this one is easy. kuwait makes oil. oil makes electricity. electricity runs along power lines.

the electric company will buy only kuwaiti exported petroleum to be converted into electricity as part of the investment agreement.

Who cares, it's nice to see our money coming back this way for a change. Perhaps this is the start of an oil-for-broadband campaign.

You have to wonder the Kuwaities thought this one through...'we have billions of dollars, lets go to America and invest in some unproven broadband technology"

Perhaps the ventilation system in their boardroom has failed and the oil fumes are piling up?

Hearing of things like this irritates me, because, in 1982, I was promoting a product that would have revolutionized the broadcast industry and had turned to Middle Eastern investors, after finding American lawyers to be too afraid of new technology, for capital to get the concept realized. At the time, Adnan Khashoggi was one of the richest men in the world, and I approached him with my invention ideas. He wasn't interested.
Now these yaks are investing in a doomed technology. What a testimony to foolishness.

Spotty

I really cannot blame anyone for not wanting to try this out. I have seen no test results as to if it works or not. All i have seen is that "it could work" and them asking for more money. Don't get me wrong, I would love more competition, but I honestly don't feel electricity and gas pipes go hand and hand with each other. Besides, natural gas companies here in virginia make a killing already and I don't want to feed their coffers.

Re: Spotty

I don't see BPL as that 'bad' of a thing as a last mile provider. I use Netgear's Homeplug device at home, and it works wonders over all of the Wifi devices out there, even those offering higher data rates. My 108 Mbps Netgear (put in a high place) will give me 2-11Mbps in the back yard, while Netgear XE104 (max 85 Mbps) will give me over 60Mbps, and the wiring has to cross the house and back before it gets to the back yard.

Re: Spotty

I don't know if any of you commenting on this live in rural Colorado or Oregon or anything like that, but being within 3000' or whatever of the phone company is a little ridiculous at that point. What else do rural Americans have if not power lines going to their houses?

Satellite isn't an option because it is so hideously asynchronous as to make it laughable. If it works, we'll all live in BFE!

LoL

If it becomes available to me, since Im right near Monroeville, and their site says they are spreading into Alleghany County, I will try it at least a full month to finally put the issue of "BPL sucks because of XYZ" to th test.
