Duke Energy Corporation will expand a broadband over power line trial in Charlotte from 500 customers, to closer to 6,000, according to the Charlotte Observer. The trial uses gear from Ambient Corporation, who last year received a much needed cash infusion from Earthlink. Having clashed in the past with ham groups such as the ARRL over the interference potential of their hardware, the company recently announced their new second-generation communication node, known as the X(2), had received the nod from the FCC.

Of course it does

Anything with the letter 'X' is clearly better. It just gives your product an extra umph.

"After several years of trials, Ambient was chosen to expand Duke's existing pilot program that uses various technologies."
I think this whole BPL pot just keeps getting stirred. Regardless of feasibility, still looks a long way off, if they've already been doing in house trials for this long.

As for BPL, well it'd be nice if 1 or more of those 6000 were BBR contributors. I'd like to hear their account of the entire situation. Hey if this all works, all the power to it....I'm sorry for that

Totally agree. It seems there has been a very big debate for quite some time from fantastic idea to good to bad to terrible to interference with ham operators to you name it, it would be good to hear some real world stories from people actually using it.

This sucks! I'm selling my house in Charlotte on Friday. Oh well... Guess I'm stuck with Time Warner for a little longer.

getting the "nod"

I'm not sure "getting the nod from the FCC" means anything with regard to potential interference issues.

The FCC has proved over and over that it is either technically incompetent to decide these issues, or it allows other considerations (politics) to drive decisions.

It is much more of the latter, but I no longer trust in the technical competence of this agency, as the leaders seem to routinely ignore their own experts.

You have hit the nail on the head. In past decades the FCC was non political and was run by engineers that knew their business. the air waves where administered as a public trust. They where hard nosed about protecting it. Heaven help the, Ham Radio operator, radio station, or TV station who broke the rules and crossed these people. If something like BPL had been submitted to these engineers for type acceptance it would have been laughed out of the building.

Yes but doesn't the chance still exist since it is approved that BPL could be the next big form of internet access? I know everything is going wireless these days but what are your opinions on there being a chance of BPL getting big? I'm curious to know everyones thoughts that are more in depth? Lets think outloud here so I can listen.. I'll buy you all an ebeer.
