Netgear's Answer to Apple iTV D-Link, Netgear lead streaming charge Netgear has unveiled their new $269 Viiv friendly Digital Entertainer EVA700, which will stream content of all sorts from your PC or other storage devices to your living room. Now that we've all got oodles of content, there's a market rush to help get that content from your office to your living room (see Xbox 360 Media Extender, Apple's not yet built iTV, and D-Link's DSM 520). The 802.11g device comes with component, S-Video, Digital Coax/SPDIF audio, and RCA hookups - we'll assume the next generation of these devices featuring 802.11n and HDMI will cater more specifically to HD enthusiasts.

The Xbox360 and alike devices are the best option. Why?
They are All-in-one devices. With my 360 and can play DVDs, download and store content, rip content to it, stream media from my pc, stream live tv, DVR control ………
That is all I have had for the last year just one box by my TV and I LOVE IT

| Re: Waste! Call me old fashioned, but I don't see myself picking up any of these devices in the near future. I'll stick with my DVD player and either buy catalog films for about $ 10, or rent from Netflix.
My rented cable DVR is probably the closest I'll come to something like this. If I want my music in the living room, I hook my iPod up to the stereo input and run it that way...

I had the Netgear mp101 which was horrible, decided to go to the D-link 520 and actually like it. I can listen to all my music on my machine. I don't need to worry about the kids getting into my CD's scratching them, using them as frisbee's etc. It's also nice to view slide shows on the tv with music from my computer. I'm still trying to figure out how to get all my DVD's to play wirelessly and although the picture is incredible the dialogue is very quiet when the music and sound effects are very loud. I've tried dvdshrink, dvddecryptor and some others w/o much success. Beyond that I'm pretty happy with it. | |

If I want to watch a DVD (way better quality than those crappy Apple movies, not to mention all the extra features that are missing) I watch it on my DVD player using my collection or Netflix.
If I don't want to listen to the radio or my CDs on the stereo in the living room then I plug my iPod into the receiver.
If I want to watch computer content (movies, photos) I plug in my PowerBook via a $30 DVI cable to my big screen.
These boxes are just plain stupid AND over priced. Another toy for the bored rich people out there. | |

Now, as far as you other comments. Well CDs.... I rip my entire collections of CDs to my MCE PC. And I can sit down in my living room, bedroom or basement and pick and choose songs as I like and create play list right there. I do have an MP3 player. But is just not the same, when you are sorting over 300 artist and 5000+ songs.
Plug Powerbook.. Sure you can plug your camera too if you want. But again, when you have it ON-Demand with a MCE Extender... is not the same. An example, I want to watch my 300 pictures from the last vacation. Set my play list and scroll thru the pictures at the same time that I listen to my music thru my Stereo (which is connected to the 360 as well) | |

DVD is 720x480. iTunes movie downloads are 640x480. You probably won't notice the difference (even on a big screen) at normal viewing distances. | |

Fayetteville, AR | Viiv? So does this only work with Viiv processors? If so, that's stupid. I don't understand this. Take the XBox 360 as another example. If you don't have a MCE PC you have to install Media Connect and you still can't stream videos.
Yet, I've been streaming pictures, videos of all types, and music of all types with my modded XBox via XBMC for YEARS. No need for Media Connect, no special processor needed, no need for a Media Center PC... just any PC capable of handling network shares. That's it. All these damned companies are intentionally crippling their services to force consumers to buy sh!t that's not technically needed. | |

I wish someone would try though as you are right, no commrecial device does what most people say they want. It seems like an untapped market to me.
I have a DSM 320 which works OK, but it is just not quite there.
Supposedly, the Xbox 360 will be getting video streaming using WMP11 on teh PC after the fall dahsboard update, but we will see. | |

kudos:4 | Re: Viiv? If MS were smart, it would change the original xbox around a little bit so it doesn't appear to be theoriginal xbox, build in XBMC functionality and sell that as a media box.
