Can't connect to the Internet, nor sync via Wi-Fi
(old news - 09:43AM Tuesday Oct 03 2006)
tags: business · wireless · hardware · content
There seems to be a lot of shock this morning as users realize the Wi-Fi functionality embedded in Microsoft's new mp3 player doesn't really function the way you'd want it to. While you can search for other Zunes nearby, and trade songs (with significant restriction), you can't do the things you'd really like: connect to the Internet or the Zune store via hotspots, or sync to your PC via Wi-Fi. The wireless, with the larger screen, does make the Zune slightly bigger than its rival. Is the Zune ripe for a third party Wi-Fi hack?

Re: Microsoft PS3

What do you mean? The PSP can do pretty much everything the article was complaining the Zune can't do... which is stream music and browse the web (albeit crappily with their proprietary browser) through any WiFi hotspot. The only real gripe I have is that the PSP supports a ridiculously old version of Flash (version 6... I believe it's up to 8 or 9 now on the PC) so it makes sites like YouTube.com and Google Videos worthless. Also, they added the ability to download MPEG-4 videos through an RSS feed but you still can't stream the videos like you can with the MP3s and WMAs.

Zune will flop

This is no iPod killer.

For the same price as a 30GB Zune you can get a 30GB iPod Video.

The WiFi is worthless, so that negates probably the biggest "hype" feature Zune had going for it.

My prediction is the Zune on clearance in short order.

or are they trying to setup something that will create a large underground appeal with alternate firmware. Like the linksys wrt54gs/gl routers? Or even like thier own xbox system with all the things once you redo some of the firmware/software that you can do. Just my 2 cents.

It's Microsoft. Do you honestly expect them to be happy about the mass majority of the market hacking their firmware?

I was searching in a dictionary of obscure human languages and I came across the word "zune". It would seem it is a word used by a small nomadic tribe in north west Siberia who are related to the Inuit of North America. They are know as the Upchunknucks. Zune, in their language, roughly translates out to "as useful as an Arctic fox turd" I wonder if the team at Microsoft knew about this when they decided on the name for their new MP3 player?

P.S. I just heard a report the new Sony gaming console really embarrassed a bunch of Sony officials at a recent trade show by repeatedly crashing during a demonstration in front of a large crowd of interested spectators and journalists. Oh how I would have wanted to be a "fly on the wall" back stage after this event

I'd be interested in reading up on that or seeing a video of it. Have any links? This sounds like when Bill Gates was releasing Windows 98 and he got the BSOD in front of the entire audience. That was great.

Yeah, Zune will be tied to the POS that is WiMP. I'd rather use iTunes any day.

And the WiFi will suck even more since practically nobody will buy the Zune. So you're stuck trying to WiFi.... Nobody....

Sounds like you're a tool Monkie boy, why do you think people are using Firefox? To hurt Microsoft. If the users wanted secure, reliable Javascript in their browser they would use IE. But they'll never switch, no matter how unsecure Firefox gets.

I would also buy the Zune despite Apple, down with the evil empire!!

Yeah, thats it to hurt Microsoft, not that its more secure, or has better features, or follows standards better. Go take your VML exploited, ActiveX infected, non-standards compliant, stuck in 2000 browser and have fun with it. Me I'll enjoy the use of <canvas>

I would say they have the sheep who blindly follow and are force-fed an OS and hardware with no consumer choice.

But that's me.

I just really, REALLY dislike the Apple policy of only allowing one re-download of an iTunes song, so I choose to not use any of their products. Their burn to CD is also terrible as it burns with no CD Text.

Re: Zune will flop

The reason they only allow one download is because they have to pay the record companies for each download, not just each sale. However, if you have a hardware problem and lose your songs, they will reset your account and let you re-download everything.

Mr Anon

@sbcglobal.net

Holy crap I had no idea about that! I never wanted to buy DRM music so I never looked into it. That is truely... wrong and very bad.

So you can have I think its upto 5 computers on one Ituens account, and you can send that songs to your Ipod but you can take them from your Ipod back to the PC. So basically you have to use some OTHER means of syncing all your computers because you can't re-download your pruchases?

Not good...

LOL. Tell me again which OS is the one "force-fed"? The one that comes installed on 95% of the computers? This sounds as lame as the swiftboaters.

They aren't going to give you "choice" of any NewEgg hardware - why would they? They SELL hardware.
But that's me.
A builder and a gamer, right?
I just really, REALLY dislike the Apple policy of only allowing one re-download of an iTunes song, so I choose to not use any of their products.
Here's a tip: BACK UP the songs you buy and there won't be any need to whine about "re-downloading" them, even though Apple does let you do that.
Their burn to CD is also terrible as it burns with no CD Text.
Whatever the hell that is.

Using Firefox doesn't cost 249$ +15$/month, and I've never had problems with it. Also, iPods have been refined over the past five years, being improved. Zune is a rebadging of a player that has already failed on the market.
And the verb you're looking for is 'to spite' not despite.

Or you'll see Ipod owners with both so they aren't tied to itunes and don't have to buy illegal apps to put anything but apples videos on their handhelds. I'll own both that way I can have what I've been missing since I got my video Ipod( That's an awsome device as well)

appeal

i think the zune will be 'cool' once people relize they can load nix on it and actually make use of the wifi. people critisize the xbox and then they hacked it and now they love it!

microsoft puts out hackable products, and for me, there is nothing more fun than cracking it open to see how it works.

on the other hand they do not have the market hold that the ipod does. there are ipod accessories everywhere, even in grocery store endcaps. not to mention all the auto makers that now have the option to have a ipod dock installed that works with the radio and is tucked away in the glovebox/center console. I mean thats a lot of money coming from other companys trying to jump on the ipod craze, and the only reason the big names are doing it this late, is because they are relizing that it dosent matter what ipod you have they all work with the same plug, so it is a reasonable investment for the consumer to buy the 200$ JBL speakers, even if they decide to upgrade thier ipod every month when a new one comes out.

will the zune have a backwards compatible Gen2 ? and can microsoft throw down cash for the branding/marketing it will take to make this thing work? how many generations of the device before it really catches on?

Re: appeal

You are almost correct, the first two generations of iPods used a Firewire cable to transfer the data/music, it was not until the third generation that Apple went with the Dock connector. No trying to bust your balls, just pointing out that Apple also did not maintain backwards compatibility.

Forget Wi-Fi: Zune itself is worthless

Hmmm, an "mp3" player that wraps everything that you
transfer to it in DRM, worthless Wi-Fi that doesn't do
the things Wi-Fi is expected to be able to do. I think
I'll stick with my Zen Vision M.

This latest offering from Microsoft will flop big time,
I predict.

It's future proofing.

Well look for the other stuff you want in updated modals. You can't give everyone everything at once or they won't buy a new version in the future. It works for Apple look for M$ to do the same.

Why the sudden backlash?

We knew for a long time that it wouldn't let you sync up via Wifi.

Microsoft is taking the same approach to Zune as the Xbox. I don't know why this is so hard to see for everyone. It's called iterative or incremental development. They had to get this thing out before the holidays.

MS will either release firmware to enable syncing via wifi, or release a future Zune to do so. I believe the firmware update is more likely. Again, same approach as Xbox / Xbox 360.

outsourced wifi apps to be announced

I predict that someone will access the usb mini-b port on the zune to make use of external wifi adapters/drivers which will be wide-open to ported p2p apps/file sharing.

Until this happens, zune's sales will be more of a "flop" than a "hit"!

I had to take a look for myself and couldn't believe it. I say what gives them a right to DRM your own home recordings? Just so they can please the RIAA?

Besides, with no Wifi connection to your computer, it will still act like all the other players. Guess Microsoft is not so inventive after all. Wonders if this is the new DRM of the future?

At least Apple respects your own material.

Don't count yer chickens just yet

MS Zune hasn't even come out and yet there are people here that are discounting it as a looser.
OK, yes it's Microsoft and they don't have a stellar reputation.
Apple also has more than a few warts yet they command the Music Player market at the moment.

Will that change? Who knows.
Will Zune beat iPod to a pulp? Nobody knows.
Only time will tell whether one or the other will be better or maybe some unknown company will come out of nowhere and beat the pants off of both of them.
