Comcast Contractor Caught Napping
Fell asleep on customer's bed - twice
by MxxCon Wednesday 11-Oct-2006 tags: business · cable · Oddities
A few months back a Comcast tech lost his job when a customer filmed him asleep in his home, then circulated the video on YouTube. Now a Garden City, Michigan family is claiming a Comcast contractor fell asleep on their son's bed, and when woken up by the kid, simply "proceeded to lay there and fall asleep again."

hmm

isn't that what contractor's are suppose to do when they don't send a in-house installer to the job?

I agree with you on one hand. But there are just as much of a percentage of lazy contractors as in-house installers no matter where you go. I was a contractor with an excellent QC rating, and my job was hard, demanding, and long. Then a became an in-house tech. My job is still hard, demanding, and long. I just have better benefits, pay, and access to tools. I am also treated way better by my bosses here, but I think that's just because my contracting boss was simply an ass.

And BTW I absolutely do not and never will believe anyone who says that they have a PERFECT 100% QC rating unless their QC system is very lenient. I have NEVER in my life met a perfect tech, and I have met dozens of them. And even the top techs who received accolades for their accomplishments were not 100% perfect. I would be more apt to believe 92-98% percent, which is excellent. But nobody's perfect.

Semantics

Comcast also said the man was a contractor, not an actual Comcast employee.
When will compaines learn, that is NOT an excuse. Whether or not Comcast ran a technician in question through their 'rigorous' training, any individual doing the work for Comcast is a representation of Comcast.

I was just about to comment on that. Whether he is a Comcast employee or not, customers don't know or care; all they know is that he represents Comcast and is there to do a job. The reputation of Comcast lies in the hands of whoever they send out to do the work, be it a contractor or an actual employee.

But Comcast isn't the only one that has problems with Contractors. I've had my own share of contractors sent out by Adelphia who had no idea what they were doing at my home. One instance the guy knocked on my door to let me know he was going to cut my cable for failure to pay and back payments. After showing him bills, etc it was determined he had the wrong house. Had he not knocked, or had I not been home, my cable would have been disconnected. The contractor could hardly speak English. When an Adelphia employee would come out, the work would be done correctly and in a timely fashion. Besides, some contractors have these crappy old pickup trucks and you often wonder if they are really who they say they are.

Agreed. But the US, for better or for worse, does not have an 'official' language, unlike many of the countries from whence the aforementioned person may have been fleeing from.

Taken at face value that is a true statement, but it is misleading.
Several states have named an official language.

Most governing institutions in the US have de facto policy to write the official versions of law and statute in English. All publications in other languages are regarded as translations of the official statute (written in English).

I live in Florida. Florida has an official language, which is English. Therefore, THEY NEED TO LEARN IT. It should be mandatory with a spelling test (on public TV)! No, but seriously, they need to learn it. Hell I speak English, Italian, and Spanish, and because of that I am able to make a complete sentence!

Yea, you may find that employers prefer bilingual employee, but English really is our official language:

Article II, Section 9:

SECTION 9. English is the official language of Florida.--

(a) English is the official language of the State of Florida.

(b) The legislature shall have the power to enforce this section by appropriate legislation.

Well RayW is pretty much right since lots jobs in Hialeah and most of Miami require you to speak spanish. Been to the DMV, Post Office, even out to buy a cell phone? Most of those stores have their signs and pamphlets written Spanish - it's like they don't recognize that there are people who speak english. Heck, you even get dirty looks from people when they can't speak English and you can't speak their language.

Re: Semantics

That's great, but the point I was trying to make was that although the State of Florida may have declared an official language they sure aren't following through or enforcing it (not like they could) - so that point was pretty much moot.

Well, I would say English is pretty influential, considering quite a few jobs require knowing it. Did you know, in order to be an airplane pilot, you *MUST* know english. Yeah, it appears when the Wright brothers invented the plane, America standardized commercial air traffic (with air traffic controllers), and as a result, everyone flying has to speak fluent english. In other words, in Brazil, you would speak english to get authorization for landing on their runway. But, this is OT.

They made sure the contractor fired him. In the US, getting bad employees is a foregone occurrence. The school systems now turn out uneducated lazy bums more than anything else.

There is always the other choice of abusing substances (alcohol,...). So what is it? Comcast overworking the subs?

I know a workaholic that just goes and goes. I've never seen him tired. And he's clean (no drugs, atleast not from testing). But when we visit for party on weekend's, he'll excuse himself and take a 30 minute nap. Then he's back and playing with his kids.

Not surprising..

This is a representation of the state of capital today; the way business gets conducted in America.

It was maybe 10 years ago when the mantra for companies used to be, first and foremost, about customer service, then providing the best product with that smile. Now, the customer be damned.

Buy out the politicians, get city/state franchises, buy out the competition, throw on some warrantless wiretaps and further federal collusion which guarantees retention of customers (i.e. profit), and your company is set.

This article is in line with the picture of today's so-called 'service'. It's completely flopped the other way. You're expected to take shoddy service with a smile, so long as the price remains low enough for not to bitch.

Quick fix

It's true we are all human and we all make mistakes, no one is perfect. In this case, he could of taken a nap in his van rather than a customers house. He has a job that deals with the public and he has to deal with that. If he can't then he should look for another job that don't deal with the public.

Even though he is a contractor, he is hired by Comcast to represent Comcast. Comcast can't say that because he is a contractor that there is nothing they can do about it.

Right. This is the second time you've SEEN it from COMCAST. How many other companies all over the world have screw up employees that do NOT make the news? But because it's the nation's largest cable provider, it's a story.

I saw a Verizon tech parked by a cross-connect facility in the country taking a nap once. Didn't make the news. Of course, this was before digital photography was commonplace, so I am probably lying. (see above post)

I also have a friend who works for a construction company. He is the guy who does final walk-throughs with home-buyers. He walked in with a client and they all caught a glimpse of one of the employees with a girl on the kitchen counter of a brand new home. And they weren't just talking if you catch my drift. Didn't make the news. Nobody except my firend, the client, and my friend's boss cared about it.

This is just another sensationlist story about the actions of an employee of a nationally very well-known and successful company. It's no more newsworthy than an Enquirer story of Oprah having a nervous breakdown.

While it may be that they can not control thier contractors, this is just one of the many stories that people can give about their contractors. It directly reflects on them as a company. I had 2 years of excuses and bad contractors, at some point you think they would concentrait on fixing that aspect of their company.

Nope they would rather buy up and buy out then fix what they have to make it a good product. Kinda like Microsoft, hurry up and relase we will patch it later.

Hmmm...

I dunno, I think it's time for some new fairy tales like Comcast and the Three Bears:

"...and so Baby Bear went into his bedroom and said, 'Someone's been sleeping in MY bed and he's still there!' whereupon Papa Bear flew into a rage and mauled the sleeping cable tech before phoning up Comcast and cancelling their service. Papa Bear, who needed broadband for his at-home honey distribution service, then called up Verizon and tried to get fios, but it was unavailable in his area. So the next day he and the rest of the critters in the enchanted forest started theit own muni broadband and were instantly sued back into the stone age by every major service provider in the kingdom.

And the stockholders lived happily ever after. The end."
