You couldn't do it, it's not like we just "flip a switch". I agree with you on one hand. But there are just as much of a percentage of lazy contractors as in-house installers no matter where you go. I was a contractor with an excellent QC rating, and my job was hard, demanding, and long. Then a became an in-house tech. My job is still hard, demanding, and long. I just have better benefits, pay, and access to tools. I am also treated way better by my bosses here, but I think that's just because my contracting boss was simply an ass.
And BTW I absolutely do not and never will believe anyone who says that they have a PERFECT 100% QC rating unless their QC system is very lenient. I have NEVER in my life met a perfect tech, and I have met dozens of them. And even the top techs who received accolades for their accomplishments were not 100% perfect. I would be more apt to believe 92-98% percent, which is excellent. But nobody's perfect.

Whether or not Comcast ran a technician in question through their 'rigorous' training, any individual doing the work for Comcast is a representation of Comcast. I was just about to comment on that. Whether he is a Comcast employee or not, customers don't know or care; all they know is that he represents Comcast and is there to do a job. The reputation of Comcast lies in the hands of whoever they send out to do the work, be it a contractor or an actual employee.
But Comcast isn't the only one that has problems with Contractors. I've had my own share of contractors sent out by Adelphia who had no idea what they were doing at my home. One instance the guy knocked on my door to let me know he was going to cut my cable for failure to pay and back payments. After showing him bills, etc it was determined he had the wrong house. Had he not knocked, or had I not been home, my cable would have been disconnected. The contractor could hardly speak English. When an Adelphia employee would come out, the work would be done correctly and in a timely fashion. Besides, some contractors have these crappy old pickup trucks and you often wonder if they are really who they say they are. -- YourIP.US - Quickly Locate Your IP!

Most governing institutions in the US have de facto policy to write the official versions of law and statute in English. All publications in other languages are regarded as translations of the official statute (written in English).

Well, I would say English is pretty influential, considering quite a few jobs require knowing it. Did you know, in order to be an airplane pilot, you *MUST* know english. Yeah, it appears when the Wright brothers invented the plane, America standardized commercial air traffic (with air traffic controllers), and as a result, everyone flying has to speak fluent english. In other words, in Brazil, you would speak english to get authorization for landing on their runway. 1 edit | Not surprising.. This is a representation of the state of capital today; the way business gets conducted in America.
It was maybe 10 years ago when the mantra for companies used to be, first and foremost, about customer service, then providing the best product with that smile. Now, the customer be damned.
Buy out the politicians, get city/state franchises, buy out the competition, throw on some warrantless wiretaps and further federal collusion which guarantees retention of customers (i.e. profit), and your company is set.
This article is in line with the picture of today's so-called 'service'. It's completely flopped the other way. You're expected to take shoddy service with a smile, so long as the price remains low enough for not to bitch.

But because it's the nation's largest cable provider, it's a story.
I saw a Verizon tech parked by a cross-connect facility in the country taking a nap once. Didn't make the news. Of course, this was before digital photography was commonplace, so I am probably lying. (see above post)
I also have a friend who works for a construction company. He is the guy who does final walk-throughs with home-buyers. He walked in with a client and they all caught a glimpse of one of the employees with a girl on the kitchen counter of a brand new home. And they weren't just talking if you catch my drift. Didn't make the news. Nobody except my firend, the client, and my friend's boss cared about it.
This is just another sensationlist story about the actions of an employee of a nationally very well-known and successful company. It's no more newsworthy than an Enquirer story of Oprah having a nervous breakdown.

"...and so Baby Bear went into his bedroom and said, 'Someone's been sleeping in MY bed and he's still there!' whereupon Papa Bear flew into a rage and mauled the sleeping cable tech before phoning up Comcast and cancelling their service. Papa Bear, who needed broadband for his at-home honey distribution service, then called up Verizon and tried to get fios, but it was unavailable in his area.
