NBA Takes Broadband Shot
Offers broadband games, but only to league pass subs...
by Karl Bode Monday 16-Oct-2006 tags: Video · business · content
The good news: the NBA has announced that they'll be offering users the ability to watch games via broadband. The bad news: they won't be offering the broadband service as a stand-alone package; it only comes bundled with their NBA League Pass, available for $179 through cable or satellite providers. There's a number of people who'd love watching NFL games via broadband as well, but the league offers it via Yahoo everywhere but in the United States, where DirecTV has locked down the out of market distribution rights.

If I have NBA League Pass

Why would I want to watch it on the computer? And yes everyone gets to watch NFL games on the net except the ones more likely to buy their service. Namely AMERICANS. Not everyone wants to get DirectTv. Once again the NBA and NFL just don't get it. When Major League Baseball is ahead of the NFL and NBA in ANYTHING that's pretty sad, but when to comes to offering games on the net they are light years ahead.

the legues should put this on the net and tell Direct TV to STFU. its that simple its their content and they can make it available in the US with or without the consent of DTV who is only a distrobuter.

Probably have contracts that prevent that.

DirecTV probably paid the NBA a lot of money for the rights to these games. Even if contractual obligations allowed for the NBA to do what you suggest, such a move would significantly reduce the value of such a deal to the NBA.

however the value to the fans would go up, then again i forgot this is pro sports and $$ matters more then the fans.

NFL has made watching the NFL suck. One game on a Sunday afternoon and that's it? Night games on Sunday night (rather watch Desperate Housewives) and Monday.

Wait and see: the NFL will eventually be PAY only viewing.

In about 5-10 years, the Superbowl will be a PPV event. Only in the USA of course.

Baseball is headed in the same direction, it's all about $$$.

You would probably want to watch it on your system if you are a travelling professional. I subscribe to NHL Center Ice and the times when I am gone on business, having access to it would be nice without buying a slingbox or relying on my bandwidth at home.

Just as you said, who would want to watch this on a computer on a regular basis? Who would pay $180 to watch it on a computer? I think it is a good deal to be honest. They are rewarding those who have the NBA League Pass to have access to the games over the internet. Nothing wrong with that.

I'm not a sports fan, but my father has the 'season ticket' subscription to MLB via internet. The quality is good streamed out of his media box to the big screen. Seems a fair deal to me for the money. Essentially ala cart viewing of every game. The NBA is just late to the party.

Sounds good to me.

And there are many contracts to consider then. The NBA League Pass isn't exclusive to D*. InDemand, Dishnetwork, and those Canadian services have contracts with the NBA and its content. There may be others internationally since their popularity has grown (if you may call it so; it's up for debate.) In regards to who would watch on a computer screen? I guess a person who doesn't have a satellite or cable connection when the need arrives to actually watch an NBA game. This announcement only adds to the variety of things one can do during the day. If it comes included with my League Pass subscription, then it's good for me.

Good deal

An added feature without a price increase? sounds good to me. I wonder if that will work during the Leage Pass free preview weeks.

Well all I saying is the NBA needs to also offer this as a stand alone option like baseball does with MLB.tv. You can subscribe to MLB.tv for $80 for the whole season. That's 50¢ a game if you only follow your home team. Now THAT is a deal. And the NFL needs to re-do it's deal with DirectTV and tell them that they can either co-operate or in the next deal they won't get didly. I'd be more than willing to pay to watch my team on a regular basis on my computer for a reasonable price. Sorry not everyone want a satelite dish.

And if DirectTv forcing NFL fans to subscibe to them in order to get Sunday Ticket was working that have A LOT more than 15 million subscibers. Not much higher than what they had 5 years ago. Cable still beats DirectTv by 5-1 margin. At this rate DirectTV subscriber #'s will catch up to cable in 2065. Maybe people know extortion when they see it.

Not ready for prime time

Hopefully a few more international embarrassments and the NBA will join the NHL in the "barely relevant enough for cable" category. The NBA is full of self centered egotistical crybabies who bitch about their soft lives all the time. The worst part is the college game has been hit by kids leaving early to join the thug show.

You people need to stop being negative nancy's. Everytime there's a headline on the main page here all you people do is complain. I don't get it. They offer games online for free when you order league pass. How the hell can you guys be so negative about that?

Re: Not ready for prime time

Because it's freakin EXTORTION!!! $180/mo!!! Are they smokin the players weed?? 90% of the teams aren't worth watching so I (and many, many) other Heat fans only care about watching the Heat. ALL Pro sports has lost what sports was all about. Whe the Athletes made "normal" pro salaries, they played because they LOVED to play. Now these college kids all about "gettin them stacks" so they can be "iced out" "grilled up" and all that. Never mind the game of basketball. But I digress...

OK so the NBA equals poor economic background/upbringing? I live in Malibu, Ca and coach a group of kids in my spare time. All of the kids that I'm coaching come from parents who are doctors, lawyers and business owners. I love all sports and it pisses me off when someone who probably hasn't done a push up in his life, makes such retarded, dumb ass statements. Hey buddy, get your freaking facts straight before posting. There's button that's says "Upon reflection, I do not wish to post. Take me back!". USE IT NEXT TIME!

Yeah, you're so right. The NBA is horrible. Let's look at the NFL and MLB for guidance.

would love this service

I have a mediacenter pc so I would still be watching it on my tv and I am in a dorm so the cable is bad and I cant upgrade to anything like league pass and I'm sure the broadband games are dirt cheap....
This seems like a great way to get around spending 091231923-019-31381083109283 dollars on league pass and the quality for me would be even better...

opportunity lost

I would pay to see the occasional Suns, Lakers, Heat or Spurs game, but there is no way in hell I would pay $180 dollars to see those games.
