Google and Earthlink discovering that dealing with the local San Francisco political scene is about as fun as being set up on a blind date with Mike Tyson after being rubbed down in meat sauce. The city's political leadership and their political action groups would be certifiably insane in most places in the US. | The poor and broadband Just addressing the subject of the goal of this project of helping the poor:
San Fran has about 74,000 people or 23,000 households in poverty (»www.bayareacensus.ca.gov/countie···unty.htm)
The city receives about $4.5 million a month in cable franchise fees. (»www.ischool.berkeley.edu/~bigyal···2006.pdf)
Why doesn't the city use a portion of this income (10% = $450,000/mo) to take care of its own disadvantaged citizen's broadband needs by buying cable broadband? Isn't helping the poor a function of San Francisco's government?

| Re: The poor and broadband said by jayperkins :San Fran has about 74,000 people or 23,000 households in poverty I'm calling BS on that stat. The smallest stinkhole of a house in San Francisco sells for the price of a small mansion here in the midwest. I don't doubt there are poor people in SF (especially homeless) but there aren't many (if any) poor households. -- What's certain about Darwinism is that it would take less time for (1) a single-celled organism to evolve into a human being through mutation and natural selection than for (2) Darwinists to admit they have no proof of (1) - Ann Coulter | |

| Theres so many darn homeless people in SF. All the hobos seemed to migrate to SF for some reason. We used to hand out so much money/benefits to them and word got around and SF was the mecca. Theres also a bunch of hippies that never left. They're jobless and still on acid or whatever they do.
The cops do a good job of keeping them to the poorer sections where tourist and normal money spending folks don't go to.
SF is still the #1 destination in America.
»sanfrancisco.bizjournals.com/san···y18.html
For the fourteenth year in a row, readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine named San Francisco the No. 1 destination city in the country.
Some 21,000 travelers voted in the survey, according to the magazine

| Industry titans it seems the corporate apologists are out as usual here.... I would say a number of the city councilman are being bribed, paid off, lobbied by the local Corporate Broadband provider to indeed slow everything down because they don't want to lose their monopoly. the San Francisco Chronicle should do a little investigative reporting and find out whom is receiving contributions and expose them for what they are. Corporate shills. hey the majority of the citizenry want this.... | |

| Re: Industry titans I guess someone skeptical might note that the same corporations doing that may, or may not, be doing any bribing are some of the SF Chronicle's biggest advertisers. In which case, well... you fill in the blanks. I would never say that though, I am not that skeptical. | |

| Not quite so fast Before everybody falls all over themselves, it would be a good idea to read the first comment in this blog entry as the subject of this thread. It's by John Gilmore, and he makes some really cogent points.
1) It's not all free WiFi - the city is paying for infrastructure 2) Many object to the privacy issues involved: free use requires a login. Usage can be tracked.
Now of course we're also seeing the generic run-of-the-mill SF nutbars, and I don't doubt that the politicians are either tech-morons or posturing fools, but that doesn't mean that there are no valid issues worth raising.

@myvzw.com | Rich hippies need "free" wi-fi? It is expensive to live in San Francisco. I find it hard to believe that the same people who can afford to live there cannot afford wi-fi.
