AT&T Offers Home Security
Video, motion surveillance
by Karl Bode 09:09AM Thursday Oct 26 2006
AT&T has announced they are now offering live video surveillance via computer or cell phone, as well as lighting controls and detection sensors for motion, temperature changes and flooding. The service, which is being launched today, costs users an additional $9.95 per month, plus a $10-$20 wireless Internet fee. The customer also needs to buy a $199 equipment package which includes a video camera, a motion sensor for a door or window, a central router to connect those systems to the Internet, and two power-outlet networking modules.

AT&T "Home Land Security"

Am I the only one that got a kick out of this? Now the NSA doesn't have to just listen in our calls, they can watch us while we're on the phones!

Re: AT&T "Home Land Security"

That is one stigma that AT&T will NEVER live down. Hopefully the importance of the monitoring accusation doesn't get repeated and joked about to the point of being annoying like the "Al Gore/Internet" comments.

You should worry less about the NSA and more about malicious hackers taking over your house systems remotely.

I agree, hackers are much more capable than the NSA.

I was also going to say hackers are also less scrupulous than the NSA, but I'm not sure about that anymore.

What about Verizon people?

So, if you have a Verizon Wireless cell phone or broadband card... just be aware that watching your home surveillance video will be against your TOS!!! You can't stream videos over Verizon!!!

Verizon folks are out of luck:

The cellular feature is limited to mobile phones from Cingular Wireless, a majority-owned subsidiary of AT&T..

So $30 a month +$200 for equipment and...

there's no monitoring service? unless I missed it in the article, What a rip-off.
You can achieve the same thing with an IP cam, and no monthly fee.

Re: So $30 a month +$200 for equipment and...

I have re-read this a couple of times, and I'm fairly certain that the "wireless fee" is one time, please tell me it is! Still, would probably be a ok service if the start ups involved were lower.

The article indicates that it's a recurring monthly fee.

I'm thinking that maybe this is for the laymen. I'd prefer to build the thing myself and not pay any ISP fee.

No url link

I did a search and keep coming up with ADT which wants me to fill in a form and receieve a visit. Nowhere can I see a website giving exact details of whatever service AT&T is really offering.
Wonderful how companies do a PR announcement and there is no url for one to read any more specifics.

Try: AT&T Remote Monitor. and as per the usual journalistic standards of AP and the rest of the lame stream media, the initial equipment package price is wrong. It is only $99, not $199.
quote:
Starter Kit $99 plus $9.95 shipping and handling.
Contains:
XG1000 gateway with power supply and Ethernet cable
AT&T Remote Monitor Installation CD
12 Step Easy Installation Guide
XG1000 Users Guide
Panasonic BLC10 Camera with Power Supply
Homeplug PLC modules (x2) (including cables)
Contact sensor including batteries

Well at least they found a use for their copper wires

Lord knows they can't be used for high speed Internet uploads and downloads (unless you live within 3000 ft from CO)

Run Away from this Fast!!

My home had an AT&T branded alarm system installed back in the early 1990's. Worst piece of $#!T ever made. Even the company that wound up having to support it after the original installer went out of business hated it. I was very happy to dump that garbage for a good well known alarm system. The AT&T brand name is forever tainted in my mind when it comes to anything but telecommunications (and even there I have to wonder...).

wireless fee

The per month wireless fee is just if you want to stream your camera to your cellphone. W/o that there is no wireless internet fee.

safe

Sounds like a cool thing, but is it worth it?

Are we really that much safer under the watchful eye of Big Brother?

What if one of these cam's catches YOU doing something "questionable" and the NSA decides that you should be hauled off? What if a friend comes over looking for you, somehow gets in (with or without a key) and starts drinking your beer?

"What if one of these cam's catches YOU doing something "questionable" and the NSA decides that you should be hauled off?"

An interesting question, 5287 Smith, W. Big Brother has pondered your question and has decided that thoughtcrime is thoughtcrime and no questions about it.

Therefore, if you say or do anything "questionable" you will be taken into Big Brothers protection to protect you from yourself untill you can understand your error in questioning the rules of Big Brother which are, of course, only there to protect you because Big Brother loves you, which is why, of course, that Big Brother watches over you.

Now, 5287 Smith, W if you would be so kind to answer your front door? The agents of Big Brother would like to come in and discuss your question with you.

And, remember: Report all thoughtcrime and help Big Brother help you.
