Major League Baseball & Broadband
MLB ahead of other sports in on-line presence
We've lamented how the NFL and the NBA really haven't effectively embraced broadband. The NBA does offer on-line video, but only to cable or DBS "league pass" subscribers. The NFL, still locked into their exclusive relationship with DirecTV, only offers on-line game viewing if you live outside North America. It's Major League Baseball that has taken the technological lead, and impresses the Globe and Mail (via Techdirt). Techdirt laments the MLB trying to "replicate the TV experience over the computer," but other sports haven't even gotten that far.

Re: Great Web-Site

I tried their Gameday Audio service - all the radio broadcasts of all MLB games for a whole season. It was excellent and cost all of $15 at the time. A few years ago it was provided by Real.com and was no good at all, but once MLB took over the service it improved considerably. They even have a minor league baseball audio/video package!

This is true. I was working for Real.com around the time MLB media was available and it was a mess. There were many failures in the service, mostly due to MLB not uploading content correctly to the production servers. Bandwidth was never an issue, and the Real Player worked fine for most.

I used their game day audio here for our connection at the office (we get poor A.M. reception) so me and a few guys pitched in and paid for it to be transmitted so we could hear it. Everybody loved the idea and looks like I will get the same thing again next year.

Baseball Sucks

I'd like to see them move the baseball game off of network TV period. I am so sick of missing evening TV programming or radio talk shows because of some stupid baseball game.

What about the NHL?

They offer free web audio broadcasts of all their games right on their site. They also offer free video highlights of all their games. I really have only looked at the MLB site a few times, but it seems that the NHL site is pretty darn good in comparison.

Not quite the same as allowing to you to WATCH games LIVE on your computer.

Anyways the fact that MLB would be ahead of the NFL or NBA in ANYTHING is quite sad. When the NFL realizes how many MILLIONS of $$$ they are losing because of their exclusive deal with DirectTv they'll re-do that contract.

the NFL loves their exclusive contracts though. almost everything they try to negotiate is an exclusive so I don't know how hard they'll look. except to maybe sell the NFL network exclusively to one provider or another.

I'm definitely in the minority to be a baseball fan above all others so I'm glad that MLB.com is what it is. especially being a Braves fan now that TBS is basically dropping them outside of Atlanta, now I'll just pick up mlb.tv and watch that way.

Yes the NHL site is better from last year. But nothing close to what MLB has. No other national sports league has a site like the MLB. Because they went to some of the best ppl in the industry (Sun Micro Systems). NFL on the other hand uses CBS development teams. Comparing the two is like comparing a Mercedes to a Saturn.

How about ..
