Qwest Profitable
For the first time in six years
by Karl Bode Tuesday 31-Oct-2006 tags: business · telco
Qwest today posted their third quarter results. After losing money for five of the past six years they've become profitable, notes Bloomberg, thanks largely to employee cuts. According to the telco, the company added 175,000 new broadband customers in the quarter. Back in June the company's CEO seemed to hint he was eager for the telco to be acquired.

Will it last?

I honestly don't see these guys in business for much longer, eventually another company will either merge with them or completely buy them out!

yeah VERIZON, that would be the only way we'd get FIOS here.

Re: c'mon VZ!!

Will not happen as Qwest has too many rural areas to pique Verizon's interest. VZ would be interested if they could get only the large markets--such as Seattle, Portland, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Minneapolis--while having another ILEC {ie. Frontier, TDS Telecom, or Century Tel} picking up the rural areas. You might see one of those 3 smaller ILECs buy them out if they feel like they can/want compete on a bigger stage and stop focusing on rural customers. *IMHO*

Re: c'mon VZ!!

That would be fine with me if they bought out Tucson and Phoenix... They aren't exactly rural.

Qwest Sold Piecemeal?

Qwest might be more valuable if broken up. 'Shareholder value' and all that.

Qwest Broken Up?

Theres probably more value if they are broken up. They already sold off their wireless. The national fiber network could be next.

Cuts

Ya qwest just keeps cutting Bonuses and incentives from their
employees. Its nice how they make all the money but employees have to tighten there belts.

Re: Cuts

sorry, but this isn't true in term of bonuses.

in fact, in my 7 years of working for Qwest, the last 3 years are the times when i've gotten the largest bonuses (10-15%)

Re: Cuts

Yes it is true, I don't know what you do but bonuses have been cut for my department. And before you call people liars know what your talking about. Ucan's don't count.

Re: Cuts

I'm with kj65...bonuses have been just fine in my group for the last few years. And I'm not talking U-can either.

Re: Cuts

I call being able to get over $10,000 a month in bonus's a month to less than $4,000 because they lowered the pay out. I call that a cut.

sales objectives and payouts do fluctuate. Maybe they thought that you making 150-180K a year didn't add up to the revenue brought in.

Some truth in those statements

Was at Qwest (national side) from 99-04, we had bonuses every year while I was there in lieu of actual pay raises though.
