Vonage Customer Churn

Vonage has released their third quarter earnings report, which states the company added 359,148 gross subscriber lines and 204,591 net, meaning the VoIP provider is seeing a significant amount of customer churn. The company is facing increased competition on all fronts, particularly from the cable industry, which now controls close to 60% of the VoIP market.

Wow! Yikes!
How many months, not years, months do you think Vonage will last.

I say another 18-24 months.
I will never trust a VOIP provider for phone service.
Sticking with the old trusty bell lines.

Re: bye bye Voange

Hi,
I just left for a simple reason. I went with VOice Wing because I now have FIOS .Its a few dollars more a month but I was just afraid that they would tank and with that my prized phone number.
I really never had a major problem, just a couple of blips.I was hoping VZ would pick them up.

Did you port your number from a traditional POTS provider originally? If so, then you cannot ever lose it since it still belongs to that provider.

Keep adding subscribers; but still losing money

Who is dumping money on this losing enterprise? They keep adding subscribers(18 straight qtrs), but they keep losing money at a tremendous rate. The latest qtr is their best ever, but they still lost $62 million on revenue of $161 million. The only logic that makes any sense for continuing to invest in Vonage is that the investors expect to sell the company to someone to recoup their investments.

Re: Keep adding subscribers; but still losing money

you have to start somewhere.
I have had Vonage for almost 4 yrs and they offer me more than any other tele co out there for the price. Vonage may be churning but AT&T has been churning for YRS like 15 and never lowered prices and never offered it coustomers any thing special to stay with them. except LOWER LONG DISTANCE
and more fees.

Just like Verizon says its the Network and Vonage dosent manage a network like at&T

This makes operations Much cheaper.

Its Just like cable tv or satelite they both offer the same services one is just a little inferior at the moment, Until they decide that you wothy of their services.

only i think Vonage is going to win in the End.

Customer service

When i was their customer for a brief period, customer service was terrible. I had to call over and over again just to request my number be ported. So i just quit.

Stand alones

I have had Vonage for over three years now. Being a stand alone service, they do offer a lot, I have never had service failure via vonage (cable company another story). It always works and is cheap. Voice quality has always been sub-par, but I realise, you get what you pay for. I don't expect POT line quality, and I don't get it. My cable company offers VOIP, and they claim clear lines, which may be so, but they are a lot more $$ per month. I do hope Vonage can keep the service up, for searching for another service may lead to same boat, the stand alones could possibly die and would leave you in the same boat.

Whats up with the Vonage haters?

Wow look at all the Vonage haters.

First of all, if Vonage ever does go under, their customer base is of value to another company. Equipment and customers don't just vanish into thin air.

That being said, I couldn't be a happier Vonage customer for 2 and a half years now. 3 Lines, rarely a problem.

Re: Whats up with the Vonage haters?

I've been a satisfied Vonage customer for 3+ years now. I'm always surprised at all the hatred that exists towards Vonage. It's an alternative service to traditional copper, better in some ways, lagging in others. Perhaps it won't be around much longer, but I think it's made the Bells stand up and take notice.

Equipment and customers are worth nothing if they do not make money. A large part of Vonage's base is price-driven and offers little incentive for anyone to take them considering that even Vonage can't make money with them. Do you think that if the rates are increased to the point where those customers are profitable that they'll stick with Vonage?

Many, many paying customers have been left holding the modem without a provider, especially when the business plan is not viable. See Northpoint, Rhythms, Flashcom, Telocity, Sprint ION, etc.

If Vonage was such a peach, it'd be in a large corporate pie by now.

Last I checked Vonage is still in business, has been for a while considering how new VoIP "appears" to the mass of population. Armchair financial analysis aside, I've had great service with them going 3 years now and was even given a discount that gives me the 24.99 unlimited plan for 19.99 when I called the sales rep to order my 7th Vonage line for my company. The money saved over the years means more to me than the doom and gloom naysayers here. If Vonage goes under I'll move to someone else, but in the mean time service has been solid and reliable and saved a ton of money over what Bellsouth or Comcast could offer me (Comcast technically still can't offer me in my area, go figure)

The statement I was replying to was that "... if Vonage ever does go under, their customer base is of value to another company. Equipment and customers don't just vanish into thin air." Several of the companies I listed provided outstanding service but are not around today, and left their customers stranded.

I'm glad to hear it works for you. I hope you have a backup plan.

Speaking of plans, how are you getting that $25 unlimited plan for a business?

I've been a Vonage subscriber for 2 years now. Have two lines and two devices, one at home and one with my family in Central America. The only failures I've had have been related to internet service, not outages on their part. When I was visiting my folks, I had a problem with their voice mail indicator not turning off.

I called tech support and waited about 6 minutes, before being connected to someone in India. Despite the bad publicity their outsourced support has gotten, he was very helpful and even called me back about 1hr later to ensure that the problem had gone away.

I ported my phone number from Bellsouth and it took 10 days. So far, my only real complaint with the service is lack of call forwarding capability from a regular phone (you have to do call forwarding from their web site).

Why single vonage out?

there is a lot of churn with all providers from the telco's to cable to voip and everything else in between.

Personally, I focus on the number of NET new additions. After all, isn't that what the bottom line really boils down to?

In vonages case that amounts to over 200,000 in one quarter alone.

I think that is a huge number. It's equal to the amount that some telco's are losing in each quarter.

Also, in looking at Vonages report.it appears they improved on their earnings in just one quarter alone by 76 cents per share.

While they still have a 40 cent loss, at this rate, it sounds like they could easily become profitable in a short amount of time.

With these results, I wouldn't be counting vonage out of the game just yet!

I like it...

I am going to sign up this week for Vonage now that my internet has a higher upstream limit. Vonage is one of the few to have great features like free calling to most of Europe and Canada as well as the ability to have multiple phone numbers in other locations of the country so my clients in NYC or Chicago can make it a local call instead of long distance. I've looked at other services and no one comes close to the number of features Vonage has.

No Suprise

I still have Vonage but I am not suprised considering how awful customer service is. I have a review here that shows several weeks of a CS nightmare with them.
»Review of Vonage by Dirtyping

Although most major issues have since been resolved I still cannot use any of the Dlink VTA transformers they send me without having a loud humm on the line. They were supposed to come up with some sort of a solution and contact me but never did. So I had to steal one from my netgear hub to get the loud humm to go away.

Been with Vonage for over 3 years now...

Typical DSLR...full of the doom-and-gloom crowd...this thread being no exception I see...

Anyways, had Vonage for over 3 years...because of my previous occupation, I moved quite a bit and all I know is my Vonage service is FAR superior to any POTS service I have ever had. In fact after my last move I never bothered to get a local POTS line. I've used 911 from my Vonage line and didn't have a problem with being routed to the proper emergency call center nor have I had the bevy of problems I experienced with many POTS lines like heavy static when it rained or over-priced long distance plans.

I'd be sad if Vonage went belly up but I really don't see that happening any time soon....

I'm happy, too...

... after almost three years.

I have 2 accounts (home plus office) with 2 ATA's. Love the price and features, especially forwarding and voicemail delivered via email. Great service if you have decent broadband (THAT's the key).

Initially, had to get tech help for office faxing on the work number. Done.

A month ago, had an issue with a virtual line I have in Barcelona (for daughter in school there this year... local number she can call and it rings at our home in Denver... $10/month unlimited usage!). Worked fine for weeks and then suddenly she started getting a fast busy when calling it.

I called support and got "Mike" in India (right... Mike-hatma). He was pleasant enough but couldn't help, so I got forwarded to a level 2 support tech (USA) who narrowed it down to some problem in Spain. Instead of waiting for that to get resolved, he just assigned me a new virtual number and I was on my way.

Great service.

Why I have Vonage

I was a Qwest POTS customer for 3 years. I moved, and decided to go about a year without it (cell-phone only), then decided to get a landline again for my kids. After 3 good years with Qwest, they then wanted a $75 deposit to give me another POTS line because I have bad credit. Vonage didn't ask about my credit; they simply shipped me my adapter, no questions asked.

I'll be leaving too

Vonage has worked well for me the past two and a half years I have been with them. Trouble is, the telcos are waking up and starting to lower their rates. It got to the point for me that it was worth the few dollars more a month for POTS reliability so I switched back recently.

It's been a win-win for the consumer. Hopefully VoIP stays cheap and keeps their competition on their toes. I might have kept Vonage longer if they had only rolled out more features such as Call Intercept or white listing.

Excellent service from Vonage

I ordered the 500 minute plan on the Vonage website on Thursday October 26, 2006. I received the equpment on Monday, October 30 and installed & configured during the afternoon using the Quick Setup instructions. Absolutely no problems at all, and was up and making calls in about 10 minutes. The call quality is excellent . . . much better than the previous carrier (Verizon) I had for the last 20 years.

My DirecTV DVR can call in to update the program guide with absolutely NO problems & even my dialup works at 56K, a connection speed I NEVER got with Verizon. The best I ever got with Verizon was 26.6K. (I realize that dialup is no longer a backup for broadband, but that's not the reason I have it.)

And to top off a GREAT experience . . . I received an email that Monday night my number was successfully transferred as of midnight. That's 4 days, two of which were the weekend. That's just . . .. well . . . excellent.

I hope the rest of my experiences with Vonage are as pleasant as the order process, install and number transfer was.

Vonage Rocks!!

No problems with Vonage here in England. Only outs have been due to my ISP or my primary router, Linksys BEFSX41, which loses it's IP from time to time for some reason (rarely).

My local cable company reduced the line rental for my POTS line from £11.00 to 50p when I tried to cancel so I have Network Availability Number set to forward to that line at no cost, but it rarely rings. BEFSX41 doesn't support QOS (with firmware 1.45.7) yet I still get excellent call quality. It's not POTS line quality, yet is still excellent.

As a further plus, nearly all the call features provided free by Vonage are chargeable by all the POTS providers here so it's a win-win situation

Don't listen to the whingers and whiners, Vonage rocks!

Not one cent of profit

The bottom line is Vonage has yet to make ONE cent of profit.

If you don't think that a profit is important in a company, you are another victim of Jeff Citron's mass deception.

This company is UNPROFITABLE, hello......not one Cent of profit. If it wasn't for venture capital, it would be long dead.

Vonage

I have been a Vonage customer since November 2004. I absolutely love the service they provide. I have some friends that have moved out of state and keeping in touch with them was very important to me. I feel good knowing I won't have long distance charges hanging over my head all the time!

I'm actually thinking of adding a second line with my friends local exchange as the phone number so they can call me without getting charged! And the two months free and no activation charges is awsome!
