(old news - 03:43PM Wednesday Nov 01 2006)
tags: Video · business · telco · TVIP
Light Reading editor Paul Harvey sends us an e-mail announcing that they've found out where AT&T plans to first offer the service. According to the report, the next cities to see service (in some neighborhoods) will be: Little Rock, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Hartford, New Haven, Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, Kansas City, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Cleveland, Columbus, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Lubbock, and Milwaukee. AT&T insists that 15-20 markets will be served by year's end, with Houston next up.

Spoecific regions of each city?

Wonder what specific regions of each city are going to be effected? I ask because I am in a Chicago suburb and would be interested in U-Verse..

I'm in Los Angeles, and I know it won't be coming to anywhere but a wealthy neighborhood, like Playa Vista or Pasadena. All the other so called "poor" areas won't get anything, I have to continue to suffer with my crappy 1 meg connection.

Isn't Playa Vista in the GTE/Verizon territory? I thought I remember a few years back when GTE/Verizon was slapped by the CPUC for given freebies to the likes of Steven Spielberg and others for schmoozing those individuals over the Playa Vista area development?

The house I am sitting in today (and neighboring homes) in Pacific Palisades at Palisades Drive and Camino de Yatasto STILL cannot receive a DSL speed from Verizon higher than 1.5/384 since it's too far from the central office. As far as Fios for the Palisades...it's big dream.

As for lower income areas, usually when I travel to southern California from New York, I'll stay in Canyon Lake. Hell, Canyon Lake (a entirely gated relatively well-to-do area) can't get Fios, but next door, the lower income area of Lake Elsinore can. Go figure.

I don't buy the argument that just the "rich" areas are receiving exclusive deployment of Fiber. The telcos would get into too much trouble in California.

In theory, its coming to Santa Clarita (including the 'poor' areas of Newhall/Saugus).
I personally think they'll target areas where people subscribe to cable/satellite. In neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley , many use a decent pair of rabbit ears and don't have to shovel $$$ to cable or satellite.

I think they're trying to target those that want it all but for a lower price. Basically, your average person. High end wants HD and high speed, and doesn't care about the price (TimeWarner/former Comcast).

I doubt you're going to find many phone operators living in San Francisco. Average home price is 800k. 1 Bd apts go for 2k/month. San Jose is filled with illegal immigrants living 15 to a house.

I see that you live in Carol Stream. That means you're screwed. CS doesn't have its own CO...it runs off of Wheaton, West Chicago, Bartlett and Roselle, depending on where in the City you are....kinda' why can't get DSL in most part of the city. U-Verse is only being deployed to new developments, and older housing close to COs.

Not sure what you mean by "kinda' why can't get DSL in most part of the city".. Just about everyone in CS that I know (from all corners of the town) has DSL or can get DSL but chooses not to. There are more RT's in this town that I have seen any place else..

I'm in the same bot as you but you are further out, I on the other hand can throw a rock into chicago from my room. However I also wonder if the same usually addage of, suburbs are not Chicago, still applies because of wiring and what not.

I also wouldn't be quick to say places like beverly will be first because I rmemeber in project pronto I lived there and our deployment was almost a year behind other places.

I just want the extra speed not really the TV although a competitor to cable would be nice, I still might try to petition our condo association to allow Sats on the roof however.

BellSouth Region

Curious to see how this takes hold in the BellSouth region once the merger is complete.

I'm not sure what to do. I have DirecTV as a bundle with BellSouth and I can't really change because I love their exclusive NFL package. But ATT currently has the deal with Dish and, with U-Verse rolling out, who knows what's going to happen in the next year or two.

I can tell you one thing, though. I ain't going back to Comcast!

Alpine, hopefully you are not served by one of the 250,000 households wired for IFITL. If you are, just forget about it. I am being told IFITL will not see an upgrade anytime soon (maybe 2007, BellSouth prediction), and with the merger coming down the pipe I see any IFITL upgrades being pushed back (maybe 2008-9).

It would have been a nice dream-to-reality had BellSouth sold its IFITL infrastructure to Verizon. Fios would have been a wonderful dream come true. As it stands, all though IFITLers are stuck on c.1995 broadband speeds with little hope.

And considering Comcast just asked former Adelphia customers in Atlanta to bend over the couch (raised our rates by 34% for basic cable broadband service), its a dark future ripe for broadband suicide.

Re: BellSouth Region

I'm not, but I hear you on this. A buddy of mine at work is stuck on IFITL @ 1.5meg. Kind of ridiculous to have that infrastructure go to waste.

Another coworker is on DFITL @ 3meg and has been told 6meg+ will show up in 2007. We shall see.

I don't know about AT&T's plans, but they (aka SBC) tend to be considerably more aggressive than the ultra-conservative BellSouth (though that served BellSouth very well during the Dot-Com bust.) Maybe they'll light up that fibre with something better.

They might be tall and ugly but they might save your life.

If gun fire ever erupts around you, you can run and take cover behind them.

STL ranked pretty high there on the most dangerous city list.

Re: Lots of boxes going up in STL

Well considering the ranking was based solely on the City which is roughly 300,000 residents and didn't include the outer suburbs which house roughly 900,000, I would say that report is some what skewed.

Still only 6Mb..

for AT&T's most expensive U-verse package.

But the advertised bandwidth speed of 6 Mbit/s in AT&T's most expensive U-verse package is still quite a bit off the 10 Mbit/s several cable companies are offering today on a best-effort basis.
Seems kinda slow compare to cable and fios.

Re: Still only 6Mb..

No one is stopping you from getting cable. Comcast is very much there in SJ.

I have 6Mbps DSL at home and 1.2Mbps Sprint EVDO on the road. They both do the job.

Where are the NSA posters

resonantfilter

@2wire.com

I love reading these posts. I worked at TWC San Antonio for 3 years, and for U-verse since inception. Lets be clear about DSL vs Cable. DSL is a dedicated connection from the DSLAM to you. With cable, you are sharing a the bandwidth from an entire cable node with every other person using it at that time. So, is 6M just for you as good as or better than a 7/10 M upper limit? The answer depends on the number of people on the node, and how much data theyre moving. Cable likes to to give you the upper limit for suckers who like big numbers, and dont look at the fine print.

Re: Still only 6Mb..

What's the difference if a cable subs shares a "node"(which is the wrong device in the network that is shared per 'se, but uninformed people love to spit that out), versus a shared DSLAM? They are both shared by everyone in that neighbor hood. If that DSLAM is oversold, which more than likely are, then they will see slow downs as well. Neither service guarantees service, so no cable customer is any more a sucker than a DSL customer who have to read the same fine print of 'up to' X Mbps.

None of course.

I always found it amusing that PacBell/SBC ran those "webhog" ads, then pioneered the art of deploying RTs that share DSL at the neighborhood level.

Mixed bag for me

It's good to see that Tulsa is on the list..maybe I'll be able to get better than 3Mbps DSL. I'd still rather have the 9Mbps cable, but it's not available here thanks to at&t's exclusive deal with the complex.

On the downside, my apartment complex there gets TV from SBCHE, which in that case is a DirecTV reseller. I very much enjoy the use of my DirecTiVo with it. It seems likely that when U-Verse is available here, SBCHE (and therefore DirecTV) will go away, meaning no more DTiVo, since I don't have a view of 101W from my apartment.

Also, I somehow doubt at&t is selling cablecards, so no series 3 TiVo, either.

Re: Mixed bag for me

go to www.att.com/uverse to see what some of the current prices are in some areas. You can either select a package or create your own. The pre-built packages include high speed internet. FYI... For being in the cable and telephony engineering business, the fiber bandwidth from the RT/vrad is large enough that it wont effect the bandwidth if numerous individuals are on it. Plus the telephony network only shares the bandwidth on the fiber and it's completely separate on the copper, which isn't the case for cable. Plus you will find the quantity of fiber in a telephony network is much larger then cables since telephony networks offer much broader services (business products such as sonnet rings) which require a larger penetration of fiber optics. The vrads might be ugly but I'm all for competition.... It's about time.
