Great quarter for telcos, customers eye faster connections
(old news - 11:33AM Thursday Nov 02 2006)
tags: dsl · business · telco · stats
Last week there was some concern that bell DSL numbers were down and the telcos were experiencing market saturation as they quickly gobbled up the nation's remaining dial-up users. Not so, according to Telephony On-line, who reports that DSL additions were up 17% from the second quarter. AT&T, BellSouth, Qwest and Verizon collectively added 1,179,000 new subscribers during the third quarter. The numbers are however less impressive than Q3 2005 additions.

The piece also notes subscribers are opting for faster connections. AT&T claims that 42% of its DSL lines are faster than 1.5Mbps, up from 22% a year ago. BellSouth says that 31% of their customers have connections of 3Mbps or faster, up from 16% a year ago. Qwest likewise says that the majority of their customers are opting for faster connections.

Saturation...

You can only add so many people before those dialup users are already on broadband.

It's like cell phones. new subscribers are added but not at the quickened pace it was before when everyone started to realize they wanted it

True it's hard to expand the user base of DSL users when the coverage areas are not being expanded. In most the areas where that are already covered the users have more than the limited choice of dsl. Many of those that have other options but are still on dial up are not very likely to change soon. It's funny watching people pay over $20 a month for AOL dial up when for the same price or less they have much better options.

Real growth in DSL customers will only happen when providers expand coverage areas. Where I live there are very few areas where Bellsouth has DSL service where as a large portion of the county has cable access. Hmm a few blocks literally will not net many customers.

Telcos despite expense on equipment/upgrades do not want to provide dsl to semi rural dial up users that also do not have access to cable. If they do that then they loose those with two lines plus dial up service.

I don't buy it.

Those % statistics about speed tiers are likely crap. Sure they might be on the 'up to 3meg plan', but like my connection, I'm willing to bet a fair number of them are more likely in the range below.

Sure, my connection is on the 5mbit tier, too bad i don't break 2mbit.

Perhaps worth noting is all before the telcos praise themselves too much.

Re: I don't buy it.

Then you should downgrade. If the line is the problem then there's no need to pay for 5meg.

Personally, I pay for 6mbit and get every ounce of it...

Then get the 3mbit package, and still receive your 2mbit. Dont get something your line cant handle. The telco can't control your modem syncing down to a lower rate if the line is noisy.
