180Solutions Pays FTC $3 Million
New year, same old tricks...
by Karl Bode Friday 03-Nov-2006 tags: security · software
We've spent many years following the exploits of spyware outfit 180Solutions, from their breakup of anti-spyware coalitions to their endless production of malicious adware. Despite claims of reform, spyware researcher Ben Edelman in February showed how the company was still engaged in sleazeware, installing adware without user consent. Renamed Zango, today the outfit settled a suit with the FTC for $3 million. "Millions of consumers received pop-up ads without knowing why, and had their Internet use monitored without their knowledge," the FTC said.

What about the people?

So how much is going back to the people, and in what form?

What people? The "people" are irrelevant in these cases.

I wonder if Reidster (180Solutions shill) will show his face

Probably my favorite moment in broadbandreports history, coming in the midst of the 180Solutions/Ad-Aware scandal. Some shill from 180Solutions come on the board posing as an unbiased poster, but his IP address revealed his true side (this was when IP addresses were still listed for anonymous users)

I wonder if they still have clowns like this on their payroll?

That's too funny - what a moron. For some people, it's just best to take them outside and put a bullet in the back of their head, since they are completely useless when alive.

Is a $3M fine a slap on the wrist?

Knowing these scumbags, they're probably going to claim the $3M as a business expense and get a tax deduction for it.

Sue them

I helped a couple friends who got infected after someone else used their computer. Uninstalling sypware/adware from a Windows box is timeconsuming. It takes forever for the computer to boot and do anything because they system usage is 100%. I'm surprised that 180 hasn't been sued by infected users for the time and expense of removal.

Re: Sue them

Well remember to tell the people alway use the 'x' in the corner to close out the pop-ups.
The yes/no/cancel always means:

yes=See someone does want us - install

no=they will really love us once they get used to us - install anyway

cancel=Always install - They reaally didn't mean it, they meant to hit the Yes button, I swear!

Once again the U.S. judicial system FAILS it's citizens.

180 Solutions is a poster boy for CRIMINAL SPAMMERS and PURVEYORS OF SPYWARE. To even think of letting these scumbags off with a joke of a $3 million fine is a true travesty of justice. I hope these scumbags and those in the judicial system who let them off without even a slap on the wrist, burn in Hell!

I agree.

how can fining them $3 million stop them? ...it apparently doesn't.

these spyware/spam freaks need to be shut down completely, especially if we already know who they are. this is just silly.

That wasn't Taylor. Taylor would've been defending 180.

We need...

an investigation into:

Just who determines the amount of the fine?
How is the fine collected?
How is the fine distrbuted?

This company cause innumerous losses to startup and "whistle-blowers" let alone the actual users whose very PCs and internet accounts were affected.

$3Mill is chump change.

Re: We need...

AFAIK, any fine paid to a government agency goes to that government agency's budget, meaning the FTC gets to pocket the $3M.

I.E. a XxX County Sheriff writes me a traffic ticket and I acquiesce and pay said ticket, the fine goes to XxX County.

Exactly. The people bear the cost of fixing their machines from this crapware and the good old FTC sits back and collects the "reward". How swell!

5th layer of hell

There's a special layer in hell for these people. I imagine it involves closing endless pop-up ads for an eternity.
