Microsoft has teamed up with a handful of Hollywood studios to offer full-length downloadable films via the XBOX 360, according to a company press release. Starting November 22, console owners will be able to download TV shows such as "South Park" and "CSI," as well as films such as "Mission Impossible 3" and "V for Vendetta." Microsoft estimates that 750 hours of programming will be available at first, with 1,000 hours planned by year's end. The majority of content will be standard definition, and what high-definition content there is will cost more.

Microsoft has yet to offer prices for the service, but insists they will be comparable with other on-line services such as iTunes (around $2 for TV shows & $4 for films). Early this year we reported that Microsoft had struck a deal with DirecTV to offer content via a DirecTV "blade" on the 360 dashboard. Originally slated for Q4 '06, we'll assume the collaboration was either delayed or should see the light of day shortly.

Bandwidth Caps

The cable cos will now be ones to start enforcing the bandwidth caps since some peoples will use the XBOX instead of the cable cos ppv. Also, I can see Micro$oft gaining more moola on this as we will now have to buy the larger hard drive for the XBOX 360.

Re: Bandwidth Caps

Yeah, if you like pixelated garbage.. I doubt it will offer 1080i content...

They don't even bother to mention the quality in the news release which means that it will be junk and overpriced.

Re: Bandwidth Caps

I read standard definition will be the initial offering with select high definition programs at a higher price. Keep in mind 1080i is not much different in resolution from 720p. Actually they are almost identical.

Yep!

People don't understand that though... all they see is the HD part and think it's all the same. It's not!
After seeing HD @ 1080p, 720p or 1080i is depressing.

So far? Just trailers... and some NASA Shuttle launch video a friend sent me.

See pic? That's 720p(which is more or less the same as 1080i) on this laptop's screen.
To me, this is depressing - YMMV.

Re: Bandwidth Caps

My TV has a native resolution of 1280x720, so anything higher than 720p is a waste. Now, if my TV had a native resolution of 1920x1080, 720p wouldn't look as great as 1080p.

Well this article says that they will have some HD content..

FYI people saying they don't need HD, or 720p is enough is ok if you have EDTV.

If you have a 1080i or p native LCD, anything less doesn't look so great (IMO, since it's down converting).

I can't get BSG in HD, so this would be cool to d/l off xbl if they didn't charge so much.. As it stands, I can just download a HDTV source encode off BT which looks better than the analogue/SD channels I have to watch it on.

Yeah, this is all good, but...

...$2.00 per TV show?
Uhm... DVR? VCR?

$4.00 for a movie?
Can you say Netflix boys and girls?
Most "Walk-In" rentals are ~$1.00 per movie, right?

For some reason, this MS - Xbox deal doesn't sound all that appealing to me, ya know?

LOL! That's funny. Bbuster should be called walletbuster since most stuff is $4 at least.

Some mom n pop movie places can be that cheap, but not many.

Dadkins is right about Netflix though. I'd have to see the quality first before deciding. Do you get to KEEP the show/movie - or is it a PPV type thing, where you see it once and that's it?

The quality of the movies will supposedly be equivalent to the videos that come pre-loaded on your XBox360 console. There's even a couple of HD videos pre-loaded.

Hopefully, since you can horse your XBox360 to a Windows Media PC, you'd be able to offload it to that for longer term storage.

Look friend, it's not my fault you do not go to a video rental store where you are known!

I have a friend at the local(not BlockBuster) video rental store, ANYONE that signs up can rent DVDs for $1.00!

My friend lets me know when the new releases are going to get there... Too bad for you!

We also have a RedBox within driving distance(NOTE: RedBox rentals are $1.00!!!!!) ONOES!!!1

How can you compare digital distribution to driving to the local video chain and renting a movie, then having to return it? These are in HD, too. Better quality than PPV and you don't need cable or satellite TV to get them, just a broadband connection.

They can't stand that I( and others) are renting the SAME DVDs they are, for $1.00!

Not my problem!
I was smart and went to a realistic rental store... them? LOL!
As for the delivery... I'm not restricted on what I can play mine on! No hacks needed!

HD? I can get HD anytime I want it! What's your point?
Cable, uhm yeah... I have cable. Already paying for mines, how about you?
Bet I'm paying less for my movies than you will for this service!! LOL!

- There's no RedBox in my area.
- I don't have an HD DVR for Dish so I can't get HD movies that way.
- I don't have a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player so I can't rent them.
- I do have an Xbox 360 with a broadband connection, so for me this would be the cheapest and easiest solution.

You have other options, I don't. Like I said, different strokes for different folks.

I look at this service as not really competing with Netflix. It seems more like direct competition to PPV services from Comcast/DirecTV.

The larger hard drive would be nice, but the tv shows that are bought can be deleted and re-downloaded with your live account. Let them pay for the drive space.

Family Video here in the Midwest, offers two rentals for the price of one $1.00) for seven days. New releases for $2.50 for three days. Video games are about the same. Family Video is the reason that Blockbuster is gone out of Springfield, along with 2nd Cinema. Hollywood Video cannot even compete with them.

I buy a console for gaming not for PPV

I am going with the Nintendo Wii this time around. I want my console to play games and that primarily I have other things like a DVR and what not that is used for these sorts of things. I think it is kinda sad that consoles are becoming more concerned about the add on fluff than the games anymore. This and the nickle and dimeing policy that EA is tossing at the gamers with the un-lockable content for a fee. Come on people play the game to get the goodies that is why you bought it in the first place.

..yea let's just leave all that extra ability sitting dormant for nothing.

Adding these things in no way take away from the 360's ability to play games.

Your precious Wii (I'm getting one so don't think I don't like Nintendo) is offering the same types of things.

It's a natural evolution.

Next Gen As a Media Center

I had mostly ignored the next-gen consoles up until last week. I was over at a friend's place and he showed me some of the things he likes about his 360. He plays his stuff on a 17" LCD that he also uses with his computer, and runs it at 1280*1024. He can run games at that resolution - he showed me Call of Duty 2, something that I played at 640*480 on my computer (and it was still choppy).

He can download trailers and game demos and they're fairly quick to download. We're talking trailers in the hundreds of megabytes and demos that are I-don't-know-how-big. In any case, it's impressive and I'm sure it requires serious bandwidth. My family has DirecTV right now and we buy movies all the time. I'm sure that if we could purchase movies through our console they'd consider that too. It would also be nice to ditch our TV service since we hardly use it for anything besides movies.

At this point, I'm still holding out on a new console - we haven't bought one since the Nintendo 64 was cool and new. I don't have an HDTV and probably won't buy one for quite a while yet. But I'll definitely be watching the prices a bit now - a 360 might be worthy an investment even without being able to see the cool HD stuff once the price drops a bit.

If you're going to wait anyway you might as well check out the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3 as well, just to make sure you're getting the best of the latest console games for what your interests are.

Well...I do know a fellow that forgot to return his Netflix rentals...so that monthly fee was now his late fee of $18 for 3 movies ($6 rental each).

Anyway, I am annoyed at slow downloads of Xbox 360 demos and videos as it is. I have FiOS and I get 2Megabytes/sec from some sites. But from MS LIVE, I wait and wait for a 400Meg download of a demo...watching the bar move to the right...slowly...

And with the demos I have and saved games, there is only 10Gig free afterwards. Ofcourse, if I could have BSgalatica downloaded for same price as iTunes Store... hmmm....

Time will tell. All hail our media Center Overloads Overlords!

Dude the Box is just something you must have . Its dynamics on Live are unbelievable, there will be almost nothing better on the market in the near future that can fuse so many practical features, replacing pretty much anything in home entertainment. My grandma uses the damn thing sometimes to talk to my cousins in Europe. I'm pretty sure that sometimes in the future the box will have a full blown internet browser along with all the features a regular computer has. Think about it. Later

rental?

so, am I missing something here? why not go the subscription route? If I could do $10/month for unlimited on demand renting of movies, THAT would be worth it. Screw paying for a tv show, I did that ONCE for a missed BSG episode on iTunes and felt HORRIBLY ripped off for the $2 since the quality was so pathetic.

Still, at least they're thinking of good uses for the media aspects finally. Now, if they'd only offer a good deal instead of overpriced garbage, it might be worth it. I'd much rather have "rented" movies be as unlimited as possible at fair quality. Sure, they could do HD pay per view, or something, but I'd like to see SD (GOOD quality MPEG-4) have a good bang for the buck.

..the 360 is lookin' cooler all the time, but I'm still awaiting a Nintendo... and I'll probably have BOTH before even considering a ps3!!!

Missing the point

I dont think people are really looking at the big picture here. I have a good PC and a XBox 360 which both run through a 56" DLP HDTV,for me alot of the little add ons dont mean to much to me other than I can download free music videos in HD which by the way looks much better than what I get from my digital box from my ISP. My son is a big gamer, both XBox and PC. Seems like every year I upgrade his PC for him for new games that come out and every now and then I have to go in and tweak it for one game or another. He has a 21" widescreen LCD monitor so he has a choice between his TV or monitor for his XBox but either way it looks good, he is able to download demos and play all he wants for free, he can use his 360 as a DVD player which I got rid of mine because the 360 was much cleaner looking and one less box to have, you can video chat with friends, have voice chat while watching a movie or both be playing different games. The 360 is nice for kids, teens, and even adults because of the fact you can do it all on one thing with good quality. Alot more other things to offer but my point is that it's not just about the topic but about yet another thing they are bringing to the 360 for all to enjoy. I'm not going to get into whats better PS3, Nintendo, ect. I payed a price for something I feel I get every bit of my money plus some to were I'm buying another one(already bought) for my sons birthday Plus they are coming out with a HD DVD player for $200 which I wont buy just because of the fact I'm happy with the quality I got but HD DVD players arent cheap either so again something to go along with the 360 if people want.
I have Netflix which I'm happy with so dont plan to buy anything from the XBox but I have been a big fan of Lost so you never know
