Next-Gen Game Consoles Arrive
Gizmodo unboxes and begins to tinker...

The next-gen broadband gaming battle is about to heat up, and Gizmodo has received both a new Sony PS3 and a Nintendo Wii. They're offering their impressions of the consoles all weekend long (rough gig). They offer video of the PS3's slideshow functionality, an overview of the PS3's media playback functionality, and a look at what freebies you get with both consoles.

Meanwhile Kotaku takes a look at the new Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive and Japan PS3 launch day impressions. Engadget cracks open a PS3. Joystiq offers their impressions of the latest Zelda title for the Wii, and IGN reviews one of the hottest PS3 launch titles: Resistance, Fall of Man.

This aught to be an interesting take on the both. Although if you check out the article they are still testing, so there isn't really any new news other than they had some needed to get used to the new menu system.

Woot 1st post.

No try $600 for a Bluray player and gaming system! And you can surf the net with it so its even sort of a computer. $600 sounds like a good deal to me.

Please show me where you can buy a Bluray player for under $600?

By the way the PS3 is selling really fast in Japen! Its going to be HUGE!

Xbox fan boys better get used to it PS3 is the new king of gaming!!!

PS3

I am definitely going to pick up a PS3 (so I can play MGS 4: Guns of the Patriots), but in about 2-3 years when I can pick up the system for a couple hundred bucks, lol.

There is no way in hell I am going to pay over $3-400 for any system. I finally picked up PS2 and xbox when they were around $150 and I am enjoying the hell out of the games I can now pick up for 10-20 bucks. I just don't get the benefit of full servers on some games.

IMO Sony screwed up adding Blu-Ray to all systems. It should have been an external option. It drove the price way too high, and I don't think many will see the Blu-Ray as a deal maker to buy the system. Who knows though, that might change in a couple years.

I also read in Game Informer on a preview of a game (I can't remember which one. I will quote the whole reference if called out) that the load times will be longer for PS3 as opposed to the 360 because of the Blu-Ray drive. That's definitely not a selling point either.

You can copy PS3 games to the hard drive so they can load up much faster And sorry to tell you but you are going to have a real long wait to be able to buy the PS3 for under even $300

You're probably right, considering the reliability of Sony and the playstation, people will have to keep buying a new one once a year, which will keep demand up...

Really? I have not come across any article that mentions copying/running the game from the HD, and I'm suprised the GI article did not mention this. If true, that is a sweet option. Can the 360 do this too?

Lol too about the $300. You are probably right about the wait.

No, some games have the option of installing on the hard drive, the game isnt copied. It also doesnt boost preformance, it only speeds up load times making up for the lackluster preformance of a 2x blu ray drive.

An interesting quote from one of the linked sites from an American observer of the launch crowd:

"Hardcore gamers are not here waiting in line overnight, buying a first-run PS3, and running home to play some good old next-gen gaming. Rather, opportunistic Japanese businessmen have the largest presence, hiring poor Chinese men and women to wait in line for a PS3, one which will later be sold on web auctions to wealthy gamers around the world for exorbitant amounts of money."

These systems selling out fast on launch (for 360 and Wii as well) has little to do with gaming. Hell, the first buyer didn't even buy a game to go with the PS3.

By 2008 there will be a huge graphic difference between the Xbox 360 and the PS3! Xbox 360 will not even be in the same league as PS3! Trust me on this

Ummm... Are you smoking crack? I seriously doubt it. At best the PS3 will have a slight edge over the 360. Hardware wise, the differences about equal out. And, how long will it be before the PS3 has a polished game of the same quality as Gears Of War.

Also, I'll take Microsofts Live! over a 3rd party multiplayer solution any day.

P.S. By 2008 the Blue-Ray format will be dead or dying too. Anyone that buys a PS3 is going to be spending $200-300 extra for a Blue-Ray drive. You can't rent Blue-Ray movies and who would want to buy one for $35. What games are going to need more that a full DVD-9 worth of space (nothing...). SONY has a long history of pushing media formats that die - about 10 different ones now (DAT, BETA-MAX, etc etc).

I won't. The company that made the game will focus on the game play online, instead of letting MS screw with it.
You can't rent Blue-Ray movies
Yes you can.
and who would want to buy one for $35.
The same thing was said when DVDs came out. They went for the same price back then. BTW, all the BR discs that I've see sit around $29.99 with many at $24.99.
What games are going to need more that a full DVD-9 worth of space (nothing...).
Apparently you haven't read what some of the developers have said about the PS3 games then. All of them are over 9GB as of right now.
SONY has a long history of pushing media formats that die - about 10 different ones now (DAT, BETA-MAX, etc etc).
So? What's your point. Sony has also had a long history in dominating the gaming industry and knows what gamers want. MS is trying to get into it and really aren't doing well at it, IMO. Besides, the two formats you listed are huge in the professional industry.

Fact is you don't know WHICH one will win so you can make the case that Microsoft offering a HD-DVD drive add-on ONLY to it's 360 owners is also putting them in the same boat. What if they buy the HD-DVD add-on for $200 and HD-DVD loses out? $200 out the window. By the way expalin why a HD-DVD add-on can only cost $200 but and actual HD-DVD player is $500?

It's almost 2007 and the next gen DVD wars haven't even really begun. The VAST majority of people still use good old SDTVs. And those that do have HDTVs are still quite sastisfied with good old DVDs. It will be at least 8 years before a "winner" of the next gen DVD wars is determined and by then the XBOX 720 and PS4 will be out. So it won't matter who "won" to PS3 or 360 owners.

they designed the ps3 with lots of room to go unlike the 360 which was rushed out of production early :P so waht if 360 got out first i bet the ps3 will destroy 360 in the long run and sure u dont need anything over 9 gigs for a game right now but what about 1080p games in the long run and stuff? think about the size of maps and quests and crap on ps3

They had to do that because Sony's life-cycle is a half-decade.

What good would it do them to put something out that is 'dated' in three years unless they planned on replacing in three? Just imagine all those folks that think their 'top of the line' is 'current' in 3-5 years. Just a thought.

Just so you know, the extra care that sony put in causing delays was nothing more than manufacturing problems, be it blue diode shortages or incredibly low yields on cell processors.

You better hope and pray that you can find developers willing to develop for the platform. Consider:

- Developers are looking to shave costs while reaching the widest audience possible.
- Programming specifically for cell is a PITA
- Porting between PS3 and XB360 is relatively easy because their core architectures are basically the same tho straight ports won't use the cells.
- Straight ports are cheap and allow you to reach a larger audience.

Looking at the reality of the game industry at this point, I don't think your going to see many exclusives. What owners of PS3s and XB360s are looking at is a long series of titles developed to be cross platform; and considering that the only thing that makes cell better are the cells, if a game doesn't use them the PS3 is nothing but a gimped XB360. PS3 might win on paper but those numbers don't look like they're going to survive the jump to reality which puts it up there with such memorable sony failures as betamax, memorystick, minidisk, and CRT based HDTV's.

As for me, I'll stick to PC and possibly Wii.

Sorry to say I will never go back to a console gaming system again. I play PC games, and can do a lot more with the PC games then a console can do.

If I were to buy anything, its going to be the Nintendo Wii. They know how to price their product, and they are opening the back catalog of NES, SNEs, N64 games to be played from the internet. I hope PS3 becomes the real looser

Sorry Taylor. Most of the movie industry is behind Blu-Ray. Only two studios are backing HD-DVD exclusively. But go ahead and get the Wii if you plan on getting back to console gaming. It looks like it will be a hoot to play.

There are more than 8 million Xbox 360's in circulation.

Xbox 360 now does 1080p

It has a 200 dollar hddvd addon.

I really dont get the my gaming rig is better than yours crap anyways. This is very little difference between the x360 and the ps3 anyways when it comes down to the actual game. If you took any game that was published for both consoles you could put the side by side and they would both look alike.

The features are not a selling point anywyas. I dont believe in consolidating everything down to one machine. So your kids want to play the ps3 and you want to play a blu-ray movie. Conflict!

In the end you would be better off getting seperate systems without all the garbage. The games are both shipping in dvd format not blu-ray.

Plus when you compare movie players HD-Dvd wins. Both formats are relatively expensive but HD-DVD's you get a HD side to the disk and the SD side to the disk. So you can still play it in the car dvd player, the bedroom, or your portable dvd player. You can still rip it down for your ipod or any other portable media player. Lets not forget the actual media on blu-ray exists right beneath the surface so any scratches will ruin the disc's. Is it any wonder that movie rentals and places like bestbuy are now selling insurance to replace your disc if it gets scratched. Better pay up because remember a rental place does not consider replacing the disk at cost the fair value. They try to charge 100 dollars in the lost value of the disk not rented while a replacement is being received.

So no PS3 is not a selling point at all just becuase it's intergrated with blu-ray.

Also it's the cost. That's about 2 days work for me to pay for it. I cant imagine what pain it would put on parents who made minimum wage. When it comes down to it Junior is going to get a Xbox 360 or even the Wii.

Sony thinks they're going to get a advantage selling the PS3 with blu-ray to get more players out there. Once the enthusaists pick up the systems I believe that sells will drop through the floor. The xbox 360 an the Wii will be readily available at a pricepoint that most can swallow. With players exceeding 800 dollars and the cost of this system compared to a upconverting hd-dvd player that costs 300 dollars out there it's a no brainer for those on a budget.

If this flops this will be a serious blow to Sony after the battery recall fiasco. They either take the blu-ray out and make it chaper so it sells and they make some money or it's most likey they'll go way into the red on this spruce goose and investors will flee them like rats on a sinking ship.

Ok for $400 20GB XBOX 360 +$200 HD-DVD +$100 Wi-fi =$700 vs $600 for 60 PS2 that comes with Blu-ray and built in wi-fi and HDMI. Yes I know the 360 will eventualy have an HDMI adapter and that's my point, something else XBOX 360 owners will have to spend money on to get a machine equal to a PS3. What's that going to cost $50?

Not to mention if you want to have portable storage for game saves you have to spend $40 for a 64 MB memory card for the 360 where for the same price I can get a USB memory stick that has 512 MB of storage to use for the PS3. Also if I want a larger HDD I can use any notebook HDD on a PS3. For the 360 you have to use the ones MS makes for them which of course will be more expensive and that's WHENEVER they finally decide to make them.

Well then you can make the case that anyone that has a computer that buys a game system of any type is a moron. Why not use your computer? For the price of a core version of the 360 you can buy a hell of a graphics card. And it should be able to hook up to your HDTV.

By the way this isn't a decade ago with WebTV and SDTVs. With a HDTV you get the same resolution as computer monitor. Most people use 800X600 or 1024X768 resolution. Most 720P HDTVs I see are 1366X768 some are 1280X720. The 1080 HDTVs are even higher resolution.

My referrence is in the concept of a browser on a TV, which is decade old technology, yet being hyped as such an awesome concept by PS3 advocates. What's the first thing someone says about PS3 after the tout of Blueray? Internet. Oh boy.

Fanboys..

i get so tired of hearing the fanboys making insane claims about all of the systems.... fact of the matter is the PS3 is a very expensive swiss army knife that has potential to rival the 360. You also need to remember that the 360 has been out for a year now, and has had that time to correct the flaws and release updates to dramatically change the console and how it operates. We are also seeing great games rolling out now such as Gears of War and (call of duty 3?). The PS3 can become #1 or it can slip behind the Wii (lol) who knows, the darn thing isn't out yet.

If you want to make claims about things based on pre-rendered video of games... then i have a nice snow covered mountain here in south texas to sell you.

And one final note, of course the damn thing is selling like hot cakes in japan... the shits built it.... they are sony crazy regardless of whether sony screws up or not on anything. As was said, they would buy 180,000 units if it were available.

Re: Fanboys..

I'm pretty sure in Japan it's going to sell a lot faster then the Xbox 360 and Xbox one combined.

well

I'm very, very sorry for not catching the "PS3's gonna suck" sign. Guess I'm slow. Or there's too many Ninfago's around these here parts!

The HD will allow you to do almost anything a PC will do.

Tweak here, lil hack there, re-twerk the matrix and VIOLA!

HD embedded games, music and video. Hasn't the XBox community been doing this for years now?

PLUS BluRay. Top Of the Line gear for 600 bucks aint much nowadays for MANY people. Hell all of us can easily blow that one a sickass custom PC and still have money to spare. But its not about "what should I get". This things gonna be a necessity whether ya'll like it or not.

It'll appease the RPG fans, action, sports. Every genre. Shits like crack! And it'll sell quicker then crack did in '88!

Were all a little fucked up inside. Might as well crack before the pressure gets ya. Just no killing over the system please, unless of course their Ninfago's fanboys protesting like I saw yesterday at Circuit City.

Weirdo's.

Re: well

I don't think its a matter that the PS3 will suck or not. Its a matter of technology penetration into the home market. Its just not there yet. The percentage of people with HDTV is still very low (single digits) compared to Japan. It will be much tougher for either 360 or PS3 to be mainstream this gen. While I'm not Wii fan, they probably have the best chance to get a chunk of the mass market that still owns SDTV.

From early reports I have read with Japan PS3 owners, unless you have a 1080p set, your just not going to see the difference. At 720p most are seeing the same quality of 360 games, and some PS3 games on SDTV ares looking like PS2 quality games. There must be some issues there maybe a firmware down the line will correct.

After all is said and done, PS3 and 360 will probably be in the red and Wii will probably be the only one in the black this gen. MS and Sony will be tough to recoup losses on each unit they will be taking for years. Its going to be interesting to watch. MS has the pockets to hang in there, but I am wondering if things start going bad for Sony, will they be able to survive as an entertainment console business.

I have my wii

I have my Revolution (AKA Wii) on reserve ready to pick up next week. I am happy because perfect dark is going to be available for download along with the ENTIRE NES/Famicom, SNES, and N64 titles. While the entire library won't be available right away it will be within the first year. Top games are first released and then it goes from there. This was confirmed from a nintendo rep. They scratched the DVD player add-on because they figure people already have a DVD player. They didn't want Hi-Def DVD format or Hi-Def output (HDMI, etc) because they want EVERYONE to be able to play and not just those with HDTV's . Blu-Ray is vaporware and is to fragile. HD-DVD may be the next format but the problem will be that not everyone has an HDTV so we will not see a switch from DVD to strictly HD-DVD's anytime soon. Also early indications point to a bad overheating problem with the Blu-Ray drives. Also considering that the games will be on blu-ray discs and gamers tend to scratch games to hell it will be screwed. I have game cube games that are beat to hell but still play like brand new. Durability, innovation, playability, and fun is nintendo. I can't wait to play golf by swinging the controller, play tennis and actually get tennis elbow without setting foot on a court, bowl in my living room, and play FPS buy aiming at the screen like classic duckhunt. XBOX has halo, PS have GTA, but nintento has innovation. The only thing that will keep the PS3 afloat is Rockstar games. Even then they might switch to a new system if the ps3 flounders. I am not a fan boy because I play everything. Also the PS3 can have 7 controllers via blutooth...7???Ok...usually you get an even number for teams on FPS...I guess not for PS3. I'll stick with the Revolution (AKA wii) that allows 4 controllers and has gamecube controller ports.

First post idiots need banned

I really wish this site would give one warning for that type of crap. Then ban the person that thinks it's so uber elite to yell first post woot woot!! None of us are impressed - please go crawl back in your hole. Thank You.

Now maybe I missed a previous news article here. But it is rather interesting how not one mention was made by anyone of the recent jail sentence handed down to Gizmondo exec, Stefan Erikkson.

»www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/ ··· 6252.php

More recent article.

»www.gamespot.com/news/61 ··· =6161300

The above is what everyone reported the other day.

ABC however has a mistrial story.

»abcnews.go.com/US/wireSt ··· =2627233

Either way everyone agrees he has been to jail before.

My opinion? Not that it matters to most. This company has had fraud written all over it since day one.

I'm not sure what you're replying to but Gizmodo is not the same as Gizmondo.

I've played with both systems

And really couldn't tell the difference graphically apart. I think you are good buying any of the three.

I feel you. I am a real gaming nerd, but I have no desire to camp out in front of a store to GIVE someone my hard earned $600.
