story category Sprint EVDO Upgrades Hit Boston
As well as Rochester, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh
(old news - 12:38PM Thursday Nov 16 2006)
tags: business · wireless · bandwidth
Sprint continues to upgrade major EVDO markets to Revision A technology. The upgrade increases downstream speeds from 700kbps to 800kbps, upstream speeds from 50-70 kbps to 300-400 kbps and dramatically lowers latency. As we covered last week, portions of 21 major markets will be upgraded before the end of the year. They recently announced that Seattle, Las Vegas and Milwaukee had been upgraded; today they tacked on Buffalo, Rochester (NY), Boston and Pittsburgh. The complete list of 21 cities is available here.

Upgrades to cities listed only partial coverage

1 caveat: the upgrades to the listed cities is only PARTIAL coverage - not the whole metro area. At 1st only city centers and airports will be covered.

EV-DO Revision A coverage in most markets will initially be concentrated in airports and business districts where wireless data demand is highest and will expand to include Sprint's entire market footprint.

Re: Upgrades to cities listed only partial coverage

What is funny is, I am a Radioshack Employee. Me and A store were arguing about getting a card in my particular area there were only 2 total 720 in the whole District. The one store manager was lieing to me about it being a Rev A card the one he is trying to get me to get instead of the 720 which was the 620. So my comment to his employee if your going to lie to me ..... I am not going to go on but lets just say that store will not get help to me and if I see that manager at a meeting I will draw him out and call him out as a liar. The other store manager let go of his 720 card to give to the new customer. I spent 3 hours on the phone trying to get this account setup correctly so the customer could get the card. Tired of people arguing with me when they said oh it ant out , it is as you see coming out slowly , if I am signing a customer up for a 2 year , I am going to get them one that supports the newer technology so they can enjoy. It is a business type customer.

Whats funnier is that you actually have a job, since you can't form one coherent sentence.

I've read your post about 5 times now and for the life of me can't figure out the reason for it or its meaning.

And I see that you're posting from a .edu domain. If American colleges are graduating people with your language skills, we have much bigger things to worry about than faster wireless broadband.

That's right, we have to worry about people on internet forums being jerks to other posters for their language skills, all that while not even knowing whether English was their primary language.

Granted I couldn't understand why he posted that either, but to attack him is much more useless than his post, and childish.

Well, not to point out to this poster that nobody has any idea what he's talking about isn't very sensative either. I mean, the guy might want to know that nobody understands him. This shows concern and interest!

He might actually have an interesting thought hidden in there.

Anyway....... the one statement that bugs me from the original post is that latency was not improved dramatically. Latency is still in the high 100s to mid 200s for most users. This is improved from the 220-280ms average pings on Rev A to most websites. It really isn't that dramatic. When Sprint or any cell company reduces latency to less than 30ms getting off their network and average pings to google.com and most servers are under 100ms then they can praise themselves for reducing latency. Even with Rev A the latency is still only on par with dial up.

Re: Upgrades to cities listed only partial coverage

Their latency is still better than my Cingular HSDPA which is above half a second usually!

I think Rev A doesn't really do any other good than catches up with HSDPA upload speeds. When Cingular raises the ceiling to 3.6Mb/s - they have Class 6 equipment - then EV-DO will be in problem, let alone if Cingular starts upgrading to Class 8 (7.2Mb/s)...

No current connection methods

I am a formed Sprint EVDO user. The problem is they have no USB or expressport cards currently. Myself and many other users have been pestering the heck out of Sprint to release a card that will work in a modern laptop.

Currently they use PCMCIA cards.... problem is they havent put those in laptops in about 6 months.

Re: No current connection methods

The Franklin CDU-550 is a USB Rev 0 device that is available for Sprint now. A review is at:

Help is on the way...Sprint is releasing the U720 USB card in a few weeks. Looks like Dec 3 release, but as we all know...no one knows for sure. In fact, you can pre-order here »moremobileinternt.com/free-u720 This will finally address any laptop regardless of card slot. Plus, it will also help those Desktops that don't have access to DSL or Cable.

Sprint has had USB cards for 2 or 3 months now.

Novatel will be putting out a Sprint USB card also.

Rev A in SLC

I know there hasn't been an official announcement about Rev A in Salt Lake City, but I had Rev A at SLC international airport this morning. I also had it intermittently at my house last night (south part of the Salt Lake valley).

Just in case anyone cares
