Cell phone companies face challenges to keep up
(old news - 11:32AM Sunday Nov 26 2006)
tags: competition · wireless
WiFi and WiMax technology are changing the face of cellular phone communication, according to this TIME Europe article. The entire infrastructure of the mobile industry is being altered to accommodate for increased consumer demand for wireless technology which provides efficient service of internet and video to their phones. To compensate, many cell phone companies are looking in to software upgrades which will allow existing phones to compete in the new market, but “some operators acknowledge that these enhancements will probably not be powerful enough to compete with mobile WiMax, and few seem to have a strategy beyond that”.

Wimax will be true competitor; WiFi not so much

Mobile Wimax has the opportunity to be a real competitor to the incumbents 3G systems, but WiFi, even with citywide rollouts, just isn't likely to ever be that competitor. And Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have a nice window of opportunity over the next 2 yrs to steal a march on AT&T and Verizon.

!

WiFi should seriously not be considered for any large scale use as the idea sounds more of a hassle than a solution. WiMAX and EV-DO would make more sense or even WiMAX and CDMA. I just bought myself a SCP-8400 by Sanyo and recently switched over to Sprint. My phone shall arrive next week.

The reason of doing so is that it's an EV-DO phone not Rev A, but still EV-DO and to someone who has been using the iDEN packet data service this is a god send. The phone operates as a modem through it's built in Bluetooth as well.

If and when Clearwire does arrive to my home here in Miami and they upgrade there speeds to at least 3.0Mbps I would defenitely consider moving over. As I plan to eliminate my POTS line. If it where from Sprint even better as I won't need two companies providing me service and I can get it from just one.

Re: fixed Wifi is just fine

How will that cover a certain area though? Wouldn't these need to seemlessly be able to hop between towers? Or we are not talking cellphone here and simply fixed point to point applications?

Re: fixed Wifi is just fine

There's systems to do this... the user can hop from an AP to the next, and the IP flow is following him. I am not aware if any large deployments have been done, but I've read some docs on those systems.

all the WiMAX hype

and so far no hardware to play with.

Does this sound like ISDN in disguise?
