'Start Over' doesn't let you skip ads
(old news - 10:23AM Tuesday Nov 28 2006)
tags: Video · business · hardware · cable
Their original network DVR service "Mystro" received rave reviews from trial participants, but Time Warner Cable scratched the system because of legal threats from the entertainment industry. Networked DVRs, which store your content at the network head-end, scare copyright holders and broadcasters, who believe they violate existing laws and threaten their control of their content. Cablevision recently scuttled a similar effort for the same reasons.

Time Warner Cable has revamped (read: scaled down) the project, recently trial launching a new service dubbed "start-over" in portions of Texas and South Carolina. As the name indicates, the service only lets you start programs over - while content is still stored remotely. One major problem: the "DVR-lite" service won't let you fast-forward through ads. It also only works for "selected" shows and channels, according to Time Warner.

Telephony On-line reports that initial customer response is positive, and Time Warner will be expanding the service into additional markets such as Rochester, New York, and Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Since it is free; better than a poke in the eye....

... but it isn't DVR functionality and the inability to record it(except when recorded on a VCR during playback) won't get people to switch from getting a DVR. And the real killer for most people will be the inability to FF thru commercials.

But if you have bare bones digital service and don't want to pay for leasing a DVR from TW, then it would be a welcome addition.

Is it free?

Because I would never pay for something that would not let me skip the ads. The only reason I have DVR service.

Edit: Is it free for trial only or what?

Well according to the news item, it is. »www.lightreading.com/document.as···=news1_3
Start Over, available for free to all digital cable subscribers in each market,

Time Warner Cable Inc. has launched the service in three more markets and plans numerous more market rollouts over the next few months.
It doesn't sound like they are going to charge extra for it - at least as a separate billable line item. Of course, it may be included in the every 6 months cable service price increases.

Launched in Columbia with about 50 enabled channels, the service now encompasses 93 channels. Time Warner officials, who are targeting 150 channels as "the sweet spot" for subscribers, say the lineup will soon grow to 115 channels.

Re: Is it free?

It's still only available for select shows within those channels.

I'll stick with my TiVo and ReplayTV.

Start Over, available for free to all digital cable subscribers in each market, allows viewers to restart some shows in progress without any advance planning or new home recording gear, just by pressing the “select” button on their cable remotes.

Hope it doesn't spread

If, big IF, the prevention of forwarding through ads makes it way to regular DVR service... that will be the day I cancel satellite and never go back!

Re: tivo

Yes, I'm enjoying my Tivos and I would never use this service even if it was free. There's a big problem with thier deal and that's if you start a show over but can't ffw thru ads to catch up then you'll miss the next show or have to wait later or whatever. What if you like something that's on another channel right after the show you did the start over on? It's junk.

Time Warner and DVR, finding more ways to piss customers off

I have been eagerly awaiting to use their DVR and am now angry that they found another way to shaft users. Here in California, I am the member of a class action lawsuit against these nincompoops. It looks like their mangaement are fools and need to be fired.

Good job TW! you are pisisng people of fleft and right..

Re: Time Warner and DVR, finding more ways to piss customers off

Start Over is not DVR service.

DVR service is provided by a special cable box with a hard drive inside. It allows customers to record the shows they would like on a schedule they choose. It's available at an extra cost.

Start Over is a VOD type service that allows any customers with a cable box to restart select shows they may have been late to see. It doesn't involve the customer prescheduling anything. This service is currently free.

The services are separate and unrelated.

Obviously

Obviously the people that said they were satisfied have never used a DVR or they would have know better.

Also as an ex Time Warner employee I know when they beta test they use employees.........................so is it a true representation of the consumer public....I think not

Can you say skewed

I have

The Cox DVR Cable Box, and don't think I could give up the functionality, but that is why I've just built a Myth TV Box.
When the promo ends, I'll be handing the box back and parking the myth box in the living room instead of the bedroom.

Are DVRs still available?

If Time Warner continue to provide a DVR option for an additional charge then this new service should just be viewed as a very basic, but no-charge, extra for people without DVRs.

Have it here in South Carolina

The only use I have for it is to start CNN or CNBC back to the top of the hour to catch the headlines.

rochester, ny...

Its already out in Rochester, NY - has been for about a month, only recently did I find out wtf the "start over" thing that pops up on just about every other channel was for.... the first time I used the damn thing it took a few minutes to start the program over, kinda nice when ya miss the beginning of a show or movie ya wanted to see but didnt set the dvr to record....

It's not a DVR...

Why is this being called a "Half-Hearted DVR?"

A DVR implies "Recorder." The end user doesn't tell it to record anything.

The end user can only tell shows they are watching to "start over" and only within the hour (half-hour?) that it is showing.

So the only thing this is useful for is if you miss the beginning of a show.

To people that don't have a DVR, not being able to fast forward commercials is something they won't even miss. They just know that they were able to not miss the first 15 minutes of a show because they got home late, or forgot it was on.

If you have a DVR or want a DVR, you probably realize that you can set it up to record your favorite shows or anything else, and won't need to start over very often.

Funny, usually I purposefully miss the first 15 minutes of a show (usually 20 minutes now). And then by skipping the commercials I can finsh the show at it's normal ending time. That's only if I really want to see it near-realtime (which is rare). Usually they'll sit around on the DVR or my MythTV box for a few days until I get around to watching them.

Columbia Start Over

I lived in Columbia and Start Over was a nice feature since it is free and works on any digital cable box. It worked for most of the major networks and other channels like Spike TV and Comedy Central. The "no fast forward" thing was a little crappy, but for free, it's pretty nice.
