Is anyone really very excited?

As expected, Verizon wireless and YouTube today announced a deal for YouTube videos to be available to Verizon Wireless VCAST ($15 monthly) video content subscribers. The mobile YouTube service will be launched in early December, will be ad-free and will allow users to upload video via their cellphone. Early reports indicated that Verizon would get exclusive rights to certain content; that's true, but only for a limited time.

Washington Post (via Techdirt) columnist Rob Pegoraro isn't impressed with the "walled garden" way mobile phone providers are doing business in the video market: "Instead of letting you use the data service you already pay for to find and watch video from any site that works with your phone, these companies would rather "upsell" you on packages that, in concept, differ little from what Comcast or DirecTV would provide."

What a waste

Who would want to waste their upload minutes on up'ing videos to Utube when you can do it on your computer for free?

Save your money; use cellphones for talking

Maybe it's just me, but I have no interest in watching TV on a 3" screen. For that I have a widescreen TV at home. Or if it is some short news clip on the internet, on my 19" widescreen PC monitor. I'll stick to talking on my cellphone and leave it at that.

What is this country becoming???

are consumers that dumb that they encourage a company to attempt to make an effin business out of this?? I shouldn't really underestimate the dumbness of humanity really. There was the tulip craze, remember.

Here is a better idea...

Start a website where people can post for free about a lot of things and then use something like Google AdSense to make a profit.

Simply brillant!

Data plan?

Wouldn't it just be better to get an unlimited limited data plan and just surf to youTube directly? Or are phones crippled from viewing content through a browser?

Re: Data plan?

Unless you have a windows mobile device, it's a no go. I wouldn't mind checking out some videos when bored but I wouldn't pay for them.

Re: Data plan?

This claims to let you view youTube videos, not sure if it needs windows mobile or not.

Well, remember...Verizon Wireless is the company that rides the fine line of what exactly "unlimited" data plan. I guess that's what you are implying by saying an unlimited limited data plan

Me personally, I feel that it's a stupid idea if you aren't supposed to use their broadband service (at $80/month) for anything other than general surfing and email.

Does this mean they've realized they've made a mistake, or did they make another mistake by saying that downloading 30GB of video service over VCast from YouTube is okay; but, if you pay for our mobile nationalaccess broadband, you can only download 1GB per month?

"walled garden" means we NEED Net Neutrality

"nstead of letting you use the data service you already pay for to find and watch video from any site that works with your phone, these companies would rather "upsell" you on packages"

If that's not the perfect argument for the need for net neutrality, I don't know what is. Verizon is selling you data access, but they are charging MORE for you to access utube. Once the net neutrality legislation is passed, Verizon won't be able to charge a 'premium' to let users USE THEIR SERVICE. Verizon is a DATA SERVICE, and verizon has no right to decide WHAT data is transmitted over the network. Any attempt to regulate the content of a data stream is at least a privacy violation, and at most a violation of human rights. If you pay for internet access, it's yours to use as YOU SEE FIT. No company has the right to tell you what you can or cannot see on the internet. Verizon is shooting itself in the head with this insane idea, and giving tons of ammo to all the advocates of net neutrality.

I hope so

Verizon won't be able to charge a 'premium' to let users USE THEIR SERVICE.

what about the arugument it our network we charge want we want similar to cable companies monoplies

and verizon has no right to decide WHAT data is transmitted over the network. Any attempt to regulate the content of a data stream is at least a privacy violation, and at most a violation of human rights.

what about all them anti kiddie porn people ? would argue otherwise when coming to adu;t content

Any attempt to regulate the content of a data stream is at least a privacy violation

what about large isp throttleing p2p traffic ? does it apply there ? most ip s address are logged does it apply there ?

and at most a violation of human rights

how does internet acess = human rights ? lost on that one

if there was aliens on the planet non human would human rights be racist ?

Re: "walled garden" means we NEED Net Neutrality

Ok, you guys didn't read the article. They are not doing something that should make you scream for Net Neutrality. They are not charging you extra from accessing YouTube via the EVDO service. They are charging extra for accessing YouTube via the VCast service. Two completely different services. All of these comments are based upon a bad assumption.
