Verizon $15 DSL Now $19.99
Hugely popular intro DSL package sees hike
As per Verizon, and now reflected on the Verizon website, the company has raised the cost of their basic 768kbps DSL package from $14.95 to $19.99. The lower price point was a major reason for some record DSL subscriber additions the past few quarters. In fact, the company had some (now resolved) troubles that involved equipment shortages and packed COs. They bumped the price from $15 to $18 back in April, then dropped it back to $15 last May when the supply/demand issues were sorted out.

Couldn't Sign Up

My mom was looking to dump AOL last year when Verizon DSL768 was available in the Tampa Bay area. She was put on a waiting list because there weren't any available connections in her area. It's more than one year later and they've NEVER contacted her about signing up. Are they still not available?? She signed up for RoadRunner Lite for $19

Yeah because $25 dial up is such a great deal or better yet bargain basement $10 dial up.

Just because it's not a great deal for you doesn't mean its not a good deal for others.

Yea, and Road Runner Lite is a bargain at 384/128. And that goes from $19 promotion to $30.

Just be thankfull that they can get broadband for $20. The only broadband I can get right now is a Verizon Wireless Aircard, that maxes out at 200kb and averages just over 100 for $60/month and a 2 yr service agreement

Maybe for you but for me the $20 is a small price to pay compared to other options in my area.

Thats about as real as it gets.

Further proof that price is the most important aspect of broadband than anything else for some people. If $20 is a ripoff, is $43 a ripoff for 6000 cable? You are getting more than 7x the speed of DSL after all. :P

Actually, I have 1.5/384 through AT&T at $13. I know it will likely go up, but even so it's still twice the speed.

7 times the speed of DSL? You mean dialup. oops.

And, yes. I consider $43 a month for 6 Mb to be a rip.

Someone had to open up..sheesh!

Just remember folks; 768/128 DSL 6 years ago was $49.95.
$20 beats dial-up from the major ISP's. It is still a good deal.

Hey, prices go up, you know; Gas, cell plans, cable...it is all relative. They go up, then they go down.

I say too bad for those that did not take advantage of the $15 or $18 DSL plans when it was available.

Its encouragement to go cable, for 5-$10 more you can get cable which can be between 3-10Meg down.

So 5-10 more would put it at 30 and under, I don't know of any cable company that is that inexpensive. Even with TV....

Where?

Comcast? Add in another $10 because you don't take cable.
Charter? It's far more than just another $10 per month, plus the $10 surcharge if you don't take cable.

No, comcast DISCOUNTS it $10 for HAVING cable. The price of HSI is $52.00 a month.. it's $42.00 a month bundled.. you only see it the other way around when you want to be a walking wounded..

It's funny... Telephone companies discount while cable punishes. Qwest does the same thing by charging $5 more with out not only having phone service, it has to ba a QUALIFYING phone PACKAGE and people in these areas say that it's a discount.

Yeah, and for people who just want to check mail and web browse a few times a month without waiting 2-5 seconds for a webpage to load, that extra $5-10 can be put to better use. Like a nice sandwich.

is this really a "hike"?

come on...$4.99 more a month hardly constitues a "hike"...isn't it more like an "increase" or "adjustment"?

A "hike" would be more like $20/month.

Its a hike, whether its slow or instant.

They hiked it so that people would see the price tiers they have then move to the middle rung to get a better "deal".

Either way I think if you go with Verizon you're getting in bed with the devil.

I'll stick to my Embarq DSL thanks. I like the service I receive. The cost isn't much of an issue to me. Seeing as its a better deal than Adephia is willing to give. Take off your restrictions on what I can do with *my* connection and I might consider Adelphia. Not being able to run a server? Please. I like my dedicated line.

That's about $25 after taxes and fees

Covad DSL charges only the advertised amount, currently $24.95 for 1.5/128 DSL.

But Verizon keeps adding taxes and fees to the monthly amount, so when they advertise $20, it's really $25.

wow bs

This is some major horsecrap. I got a bill I guess 2 months ago charging me $17.99. I recieved no notification that my 1 year at $14.95 was up whatsoever. When I recieved the first bill I called to see if I could renew at $14.95 I was told that plan doesn't exist anymore. I than asked if I could get a year at $17.99 and was told that they do not do 1 year contracts for existing customers on the 768k plan anymore.

Now I can see why I was told this crap. I will be hit with $20 a month + taxes now. Is there anything at all I can possibly do to at least stay at $17.99 for 1 year?

Please let me know

If you completed the one year at 14.95 then you go month to month at 17.99. You don't have to do anything.

33% price increase in a year?!

I started my Uncle at $15 last Xmas and now it's $20 with no speed increase? Verizon should automatically make $20 people get 1500 now that $30 people all get 3000 speed. It seems we cheap to implement DSL users are helping subsidize Verizon's expensive to build FiOS customers. It's just not fair, let them pay for their own fiber.

Read the TOS?

I bet if these people actually read the TOS they'd find that this price changing [read:gouging] is allowed by said TOS.

It seems nowadays most people don't bother to read the small print, then wonder why their interest rate on their cc hikes to 22.5% APR after the first 6 to 12 months. I'm not one of those idiot college students that goes for those cc "scams". However I'm also in a boat where if I don't get one of those "scam" cc deals I'm gonna get screwed on trying to get a car or home later in life. Its a catch 22.

Same goes for broadband atm. Just about anyone you go with is going to be the devil. I have to admit Embarq is no saint. Sprint merely changed their name (for the most part). Prices did go down slightly. Although being single and hardly ever using my home phone the bundle "deal" isn't really a deal for me. Its good in that I save about 5-10 bucks a month because they screw you if you try to do otherwise. (Non-bundle that is)

Right now I pay around $70-75 a month for my 3.0Mbit with my phone bill included. Which only has the perk of getting a 'free' 30min long distance call a month. I do have call waiting, 3 way calling, etc. But the only thing I use is maybe the caller ID and I really don't even need that. I use my cell phone most of the time which is Cingular. That issue is a whole different story though...

It's not a Catch-22.

Get a credit card, don't carry a balance. Then you're building credit without paying a high interest rate. Problem solved.

Wow

Some of your comments are ridiculous, as usual.

This is simple economics. Faced with incredible demand for this package that Verizon cannot adequately accomodate (see other articles relating to this package), Verizon has two choices. They can either increase capacity or raise the price to curb demand. Most of the time, companies in this situation do a combination of both to maximize the potential of their efforts.

In short, their price raise is just as much about curbing the incredible demand as it is squeezing more money out of the package.

Cable looking better and better

looks like Verizon is closing the price gap on Optimum Online as well. If they aren't careful, VZ will lose the tri-state area. I mean come on> 786/256k @ $20+tax+fees and then you have OOL> 15,000/2,000k @ $30/$45 OR 30,000/5,000k @ $55/$60. who cares if you don't need the speed, you never know that for sure and on top of that your PINGs with cable might be better so I say go with the better VALUE unless you think it's absolutely unnecessary.

...then again for you guys outside the tri-state it's still a bargain to get cable. I mean, how much is the regular DSL service cost and what's it's speed??

Re: Cable looking better and better

I had Comcast at 8300/360 but moved so I was going to go to the $15.00 DSL. Then they told me about the price hike. PLUS, It was going to be 14 days until I got it. I had ordered the DSL, then cancelled it after some thinking about it. Verizon is terrible. I plan on getting away from them completely soon. There old landlines are even outrageous. Time to go Cell phone only now.

Now Comcast HSI was on when I connected the modem and did a little sign-up confirmation. PLUS. Instead of transferring my old account to the new address, I stopped service and did a name transfer from who was in the place before. Because It was considered a different account, there were no connection fee's and I got the 6 months HSI Deal for $19.95.

Cya Verizon.

Earn big profits in 6 easy steps!

/sarcasm on
Step 1: Get the FCC to deregulate DSL
Step 2: Drop DSL retail rates below your wholesale customers (Other ISPs)wholesale rate.
Step 3: Sustain loses with monies collected from USF and other tax breaks intended for FTTH.
Step 4: Once Mom and Pop ISPs are out of the way begin to raise prices.
Step 5: Form Coke/Pepsi relationship with the CableCo.
Step 6: Laugh all the way to the bank.

What a surprise...

This makes DSL suck even more.

Yeah the CEO making 450,000 a year at Verizon needs to make 500,000 now, he wasn't making enough.

--Tears roll down eyes--

Oh yeah forgot, who ever works in the call center at Verizon will probably have pay cuts too, to compensate for the CEO's bigger salaries, and probably some lay-offs!

Verizon DSL as low as $21.99 per month for new customers with a one year contract. Plus - Either a one time modem fee of $29.99 or a shipping and activation charge of $19.99 required.
