Uh, no; it's a geography thing. It's near-winter in Florida, and near-summer in French Guiana.

New clients starting in April, 2007

WildBlue will conduct in-orbit testing and plans to offer service using the new satellite beginning April 12.
And it will allow Wildblue to triple the number of broadband customers up to 1 million.

While it's better than nothing I suppose, this doesn't solve any of the latency issues with satellite broadband does it?

No, but then again you are at the mercy of the laws of physics there and if you are in an area where your only choice is either dialup or satellite, I think most wouldn't care too much about the latency and go with satellite merely for the speed alone. I know that would be the case for me anyhow.

I actually had the chance to experience a satellite net connection this past year on one of my vacations to a small resort way down in the boonies part of SE Ohio. The office had free wifi hooked up to I BELIEVE a Wildblue connection. Didn't know the speed, I just knew it was a satellite based connection. Albeit I only used it to check email and a few websites during my stay, I didn't notice much of a difference from a standard cable or dsl connection to be totally honest.

No it doesn't solve latency but it COULD ease that brutal FAP policy. Sadly I doubt they will change it though.

If only the Verizon CSRs worked this well.

Nope...at least not until someone invents 'subspace' radio....

There is a solution, but it is very costly: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_···ellation

Teledesic would have been the bomb had they not ran into that lack of money problem. »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teledesic

Yay, way to go WildBlue, it's only been forever that we've been hearing about it. Now I wonder how many people will actually use the service?

My daughter lives so far out in the desert that she had to drive 10 miles just to get to the nearest landline phone and dialup connection. She's had WildBlue for nearly a year now and absolutely loves it. We're one of the lucky few to get DSL in our part of the desert and WildBlue is becoming a big hit among those in this area that can't get DSL as there isn't any cable service within 40 miles of here.

Hopefully

Hoepefully, it helps get our latency back to the 600 ms range.

Re: .......

I agree..

Growing up I had direcpc / direcway way back when it was one way with dial return. I have about 6 years user experience and agree I would commit suicide before I would have it again!

LOL, I must have old sneakers that are twice as old as you are then. The Voice of Wisdom!

Wildblue is way better than 1-way Direcway. And way better than dial-up.

Re: .......

better as in how...possibly reliability maybe so BUT the reality is they both suffer from the same issues.. ie..latency, slow uploads, FAP, inability to truly support IPSEC VPN, limited support for SSL VPN's and piss poor tech support. Now WB may be better at tech support but who cares if the service still sux..

expand cell networks

Why arent 3g/3.75g cell networks expanded? Latency solved and speeds are comperable with satellite with current tech.
