10 Markets, including Sacramento and Salt Lake City
(old news - 09:25AM Wednesday Dec 13 2006)
tags: wireless · bandwidth
Engadget runs with the unsourced rumor that Verizon will be launching their first round of EVDO Revision A upgrades this Friday in ten markets. While Sprint will deploy the faster EVDO speeds to a total of 21 markets before the year's end, Verizon has been content to stay mum on the subject. Sacramento and Salt Lake City are rumored to be among the first cities to see the upgrades, which, in addition to faster speeds, should provide reduced latency for EVDO fans.

Make it faster???

Why, so they can kick off people that download too much that much quicker???

Re: Make it faster???

Well, going from 700kb to 800kb isn't that particularly a huge 'jump' in speed, so don't expect any shorter/quicker DL times.

Sweet!!

I have about 110 Police Crusier's using this service & my officers are always complaining to me about dead spots & slow speeds. Although I must admit things are getting much better.

Upgrade options?

I have a few users that use this service at my job. It's a 50/50 split between ones with the PC Card and ones built into the laptop (ThinkPad Z6x series.)

The cards built into the laptop are a 'PCI Express Mini Card.' I wonder if replacement cards will be made available? Probably only on eBay. lol

is it priced fairly?

Would be a nasty shock for the shareholders if they were to price themselves out of the market after investing untold BILLIONS on the technology!!!

I'm still surprised it (or any wireless data plans) can compete with the likes of free ubiquitous WIFI across linksys-land-usa.

Re: is it priced fairly?

free wifi is still a crapshot. I'd rather pay to have virtually guaranteed wifi coverage wherever i go. (as long as it is offered in that city!)

Interesting report at gigaom posting a Verizon quote:

We’ve had a number of communities lit up with Rev. A for a few months, and expect to introduce a first PC card in the coming weeks. We won’t be announcing a launch of Rev. A until we hit a significant number of markets up and running, though. — Verizon Wireless, Jeffrey Nelson
