Naps, Explosions, and murder, oh my...

Yes, we're well aware that the vast majority of Comcast employees are decent, hard-working folk -- but it seems like Comcast just can't catch a break when it comes to its technicians (or subcontractors) and bad news this year. Last June, a Comcast tech was fired for falling asleep at an install, after a video of the nap was posted to YouTube. In October, a Comcast contractor was also busted for a cat nap. Earlier this month, a Comcast installer punctured a gas line that ultimately led to a house explosion, killing two people, and Comcast and their contractors are being sued by a family for a similar home explosion last March. Now comes a story out of Chicago of a Comcast contractor being held as a suspect in two murders.

Are these instances just happenstance because Comcast is such a massive company, or are we starting to see an indictment of the company's hiring/subcontracting practices? It's worth remembering that we have seen some heroic behavior from Comcast technicians as well, such as the two Comcast techs who saved a drowning 10 year old last year.

Is he "allegedly" being held for murder or it is a fact he is being held for allegedly committing murder?

He's being held for an alleged murder.

It's a matter of semantics, I was trying to be comedic with my "allegedly"....

Guess my time on the job has twisted my sense of humor a bit, and the normals don't get the joke..

Maybe some are just going "Postal"? Or "Comcastic"?

Umm, I think alleged should be there since he has NOT been convicted of anything. Gee, BBR thinks file-sharing, apparently mostly illegal at that, is a right and has forums on how to do it with all the how to get the best videos (with a "don't download illegal stuff" caveat) but can't find "allegedly" in their vocabulary. Probably because quite a few are guilty of something illegal like swapping MP3s and DVDs.

Allegedly punctured a gas line; murder suspect sub-contract

Earlier this month a Comcast tech punctured a gas line that ultimately caused the house to explode,
Don't you mean allegedly punctured, since that investigation has not determined that fact yet. Latest news on this from google search:

But to the issue of the accused murderer and Comcast hiring practices, the major issue there is the use of unmonitored sub-contractors. In this case the sub-contractor did do the required pre-hiring security screenings, but after the employee was accused of killing someone, the sub-contractor should have at the very least removed him from customer calls until the case was resolved. If Comcast has any civil liability here, it will be due to inadequate monitoring of their sub-contractors employee policies.

Triplett, 25, worked for Premier Cable Communications, which subcontracts for Comcast. He had no previous criminal record and had passed a criminal background check by Premier, according to a Comcast spokeswoman.

Re: Allegedly punctured a gas line; murder suspect sub-contract

On your first note, it was in fact determined that he did puncture it and called in the gas company to fix it. This part was never in debate.
What was "alleged" was that the punctured line lead to the explosion. But I agree with your point, certainly since in my mind the gas company's failure to shut off the punctured gas is what actually lead to the explosion.

On the topic at hand...... I agree that you can't directly blame Comcast for this sub-contractors actions. I'd even take it a step further to say that unless someone notified them of the criminal charge, or even suspicion of one, there really isn't much they could have done. The police to not make a habit of calling the employer after an arrest.

Keeping in mind I have absolutely NO love for Comcast what so ever, but I choose to hate them for the things within their control, not fluke/rogue contractors.

Re: Allegedly punctured a gas line; murder suspect sub-contract

In Texas, there's a law that say you have to notify
companies prior to digging where there may be under-
ground gas lines and so on. If the subcontractor didn't
do this, he could be liable.

Re: Allegedly punctured a gas line; murder suspect sub-contract

there are gas lines in homes too. and believe it or not, installers have to drill into homes to bring in a cable. i'm not saying the guy was not at fault, (i can tell when i i'm drilling into something that isn't wood) but it could happen accidentally. As far as the dude killing someone, well, don't piss off the cable guy next time.... wait, thats really poor taste, i'm sorry.

How far they go back is not the issue. How far they go forward might be. Just because someone passes a background check and has no record doesn't mean they aren't bats. You can't wash your hands of continued monitoring just because the hire seems clean when hired.

Some of the Comcast subs around here may not be murderers but I certainly would not leave them alone on my property. A couple of years back I saw two stealing a case of beer from a distributor's truck parked at 7-11.

Who is to say it wasn't the same guy.

I'm in Hyde Park, where the first murder took place. The second was out on the SW side a bit west of Midway Airport, You are in the Western burbs - not all that far away.

This creep got around.

And it is amazing to me that the company continued to send him out on calls. Someone needs to look into that. For myself, I can't wait till we get another cable operation around here or - if it ever happens (HA!) - project lightspeed - so I can cease doing business of any sort with Comcast.

I work in Harvey and it's not uncommon to see a half dozen comcast subs' trucks/vans parked in a dunkin' donuts or similiar parking lot in the morning. You'd think they're all inside grabbing joe? Nah. Usually the largest van is full of them getting high.

I watched one sub pull out of the dispatch office and lose the extension ladder. It was roped. With twine. On top of his two-door car. And he blocked the road for at least 10 minutes over it (I turned around), instead of pulling to the side and messing with the ladder there.

How about the pair of installers that could not find the tap that Comcast had just pulled half a block and terminated in a green mini-ped thing outside? All day project.

What about the tech that uninstalled my parents' display drivers and other nonsense last year, and left with the internet still not working on a promise that he'd be back shortly.

Remember this: »cbs2chicago.com/investigations/l···659.html ?

Is Comcast at fault? Damned right. Is the sub himself at fault? Yep. His company too? Of course.

Just because it's a bad apple doesn't mean nobody has to take the heat for it and actually do *something* so they can say "we've learned from this...yada yada".

Not that all are bad, but there's seriously more that can be done especially when you're putting people wearing your logo in peoples homes, around private property, children, and really making them a direct, in person, representation of your comany.

Oh well that settles it then. It is rediculous to you, therefore, employers should have absolutely no liability for the actions performed by their agents during the scope of the job they've been hired to do because of the existence of "a few bad apples." Just a snap shot of life in America

I'd say Comcast is just a reflection of life in America. You have a pretty good percentage of people who show up just for a paycheck, others who are drug addicts, others who are incompetent and a few hard core criminals, with the exception to the rest being a few good Samaritans. That's about the way things shake out in America from my perspective.

It boils down to the reality that people are basically no damn good until they prove otherwise.

Their have been reports of fake water employees robbing people around here.

Three thieves posing as water company repair workers have burglarized homes from San Francisco to Morgan Hill in the past two months, vexing Bay Area police who on Wednesday warned the public to be on guard.

About 35 homes in the Bay Area have been hit in the past two months, police said, with one 94-year-old woman losing $70,000 in cash and jewelry from her Saratoga home.

The thieves appear to be targeting seniors, with all of the victims in their 70s, 80s and 90s, Mountain View Police Chief Scott Vermeer said at a news conference Wednesday.

Sub-contractors.

When I "worked" for Comcast, I was a sub-contractor of a sub-contractor. I could have gotten away with a lot of crap if I wanted to. It was absolutely amazing to me how unsupervised I was, and how little I was required to report to anyone.

I don't know about employees, but it doesn't surprise me to learn contractors do a lot of bad stuff; I think they do need more supervision, one way or another.

Creepy Comcast in Chicago

The first murder happened about 1/2 mile from where I live. This is the inner city, but it's a pretty good hood, with moderate to low crime. Not much violent crime. The victim lived in a high-rise so she would have had to let the perp in.

They didn't get the guy till he did it again last week in a different, even quieter neighborhood.

But was Comcast found at fault?

It might not be Comcast's fault. I tried looking up more info on it, but came up with nothing. Usually gas lines are "supposed" to be surrounded by rock/pebble. I know, if you are digging a major hole, you need to get it marked by surveyors.

Installer should have stopped when seeing there was no proper ground. Especially seeing that there was very little "green" property to do a proper grounding. Even if it did no blow up right then, it would in the next major storm.

Roadside attorneys

It's funny all the wannabe thoughts here, from what I've seen comcast employees, clean records. So are you upset cause you were turned down? Or was it because you couldn't get a better job than a contractor? Contractors also are checked, however if they choose not to report their employees to the company, then what are you to do? Maybe the lawyers should have the right to decide and allow the legal system to work. As funny as that sounds, it boils down to, know what the hell your talking about before you open your mouth. People aren't born bad, they one day decide to become it. For the ones that see "sub/contractors/employees" doing things you feel they shouldn't, then step up and say something, for you are just as guilty.... just my 2 cents

couldn't get a better job then contractor? been on both sides of the fence on that one. inhouse for comcast and at&t broadband for 5 years, contractor for 2 years... lets just say i made more in 2 years of contracting then 5 years of inhouse work..... people might say what about the insurance, well, i can afford the higher premiums making 3x's what i did inhouse.... so, its not that bad. and, for the record, i wouldn't let any cable guy in my house if i wasn't home...... wait, i wouldn't let ANY service person in my house if i weren't there. not that i don't trust them, but i value my wife and children enough to find out if the person working is insane or not.

Comcast Sub Held For Murder

This scares the hell out of me. I could have been one of the murdered ladies.

Hubby got two new HDTVs, so I called to swap the digital boxes for HD boxes and have a tech check the drop because of intermittent pixelization (ended up with a new drop).

There I was at home by myself for the service call and the tech that showed up at my door was in his own red pickup (a subcontractor), had no Comcast ID, a limited number of tools, and claimed that it was his first day on the job.

No way was I going to let him in the house. I called a male friend for backup, and waited for him to get there before I let the Comcast guy in my house.

It all turned out OK, but the tech was there for more than three hours. I had to help him because he had almost no idea what he was doing.
