Milpitas, California today, New Orleans tomorrow
(old news - 03:42PM Wednesday Dec 20 2006)
GigaOM's Katie Fehrenbacher heads to Milpitas, California, to check out the latest city to receive the Earthlink Wi-Fi treatment (see Earthlink press release). Fehrenbacher calls the network "underwhelming" and notes that speeds were slow and coverage was spotty, at least on the first day that is. Earthlink says they should finish up negotiations over the San Francisco network by the end of the week after much painful negotiation. Earthlink also says they will announce the launch of their New Orleans Wi-Fi network tomorrow.

Well, if it's slow and spotty, why would anyone pay for it?

Just because it is free doesn't mean that it is worth using. The reporter was seeing if the product works - it apparently doesn't work very well. Just like most of these citywide WiFi rollouts.

"Speeds were slow and coverage was spotty" is no where near a detailed enough analysis to say it doesn't work very well.

Where was she trying to get coverage? Was she indoors, outdoors? What does she mean by slow exactly? Slow browsing? What was slow, the initial request or the actual downloading of the page? Or was she perhaps visiting a busy website?

I think the part that "doesn't work very well" are most people's expectation that WiFi rolled out across an entire city will work as well as their home broadband connection.

Hell, by her definition my cellphone "doesn't work very well" and Verizon has spent BILLIONS to design and roll out their network.

Work in Progress

You guys have to remember, when these systems get turned on, there are always going to be dead spots, engineering mesh networks inside of a city is not an exact science, every city has different interference and geographical issues.

Give them some time, Tropos Gear (What they are using) is really good gear and was you tinker a little with a new mesh network, they will get it working better
