In-Flight Broadband Plans Stall
Panasonic Connexion replacement sees turbulence
Last fall, we noted how Panasonic had a plan to migrate all of Boeing's Connexion in-flight broadband customers to a lighter and cheaper system that was "designed, developed and ready to go." The Wall Street Journal (via Wi-Fi Networking News) reports that those plans aren't going particularly well due to some "financial and regulatory complications." Now the Panasonic plan and another competing plan by Aircell have both been pushed well into 2008.

Re: Good Lord

Depends... If you are like yourself, an average Joe, you probably can do without the internet on your four hour flight... If you are a systems or network administrator, who has hundreds of systems under his or her watchful eye, you bet you need something like this on your flights if there is no one else monitoring your systems.

Actually, those really are the only people I can think of that need something like this... People whose jobs demand connectivity to the network because its their job.

Re: Good Lord

Mabye the Network geek should hire another geek. I like the fact my flights are "Net" free. Peace and quiet not having some pervs getting their rocks off watching porn on the flight.

Some companies don't have the resources... Hiring isn't always done at the department level because there isn't a department or its not big enough. Or there are security reasons...

Ahh, yes, using hyperbole... Using the most extreme possible case in an effort to negate the myriad of other reasons why it might be beneficial to have net access on a flight. Try again.

Looking for a quiet flight

As someone who flies almost every week, there are two things I hope I never see on planes:

1. Cell Phones
2. Internet.

I just flew back from China on Singapore Airlines, which offers internet connections, and I'm glad I never took my laptop out of my briefcase.

The only time I seem to have a chance for peace and quiet is on a plane- no laptop, no cell phone and no Blackberry.
