What a long strange trip it's been...

Yesterday Earthlink launched their 20 square mile New Orleans Wi-Fi network -- the third such launch this year. Post-Katrina, and much to the chagrin of BellSouth, the city had been temporarily using a 512kbps citywide Mesh Wi-Fi network used by security cameras to keep businesses on-line. The network, however, ran afoul of Cox/BellSouth lobbied laws banning Louisiana cities from running anything faster than 128kbps -- so the city turned to Earthlink for help.

Anywho, Earthlink is a day late and a few hundred thousand dollars short. Cox sprung back to life after the hurricane. If Earthlink wanted a piece of the pie they should have jumped on it immediately following the hurricane.

Yeah, which is why I don't understand the deal with Earthlink. A few months ago it was all over the papers about Earthlink This and Earthlink That, then silence. Now a resurgence of Earthlink Wi-Fi? I dunno, I'll stick with Cox Communications. It works better now then before the storm

Quite a bit more expensive than what Earthlink is offering.

Exactly, I can't use Cox and Bellsouth anywhere and everywhere in the city without crossing into a grey area of the law... Sometimes I need internet access for my laptop so I can pull up my location and get directions to another location when I'm lost (it does happen for locals, oddly enough).

Earthlink eliminates that problem.

Automate join:2001-06-26 Atlanta, GA	Why do people insist on comparing Wi-Fi service to single location DSL and/or cable service? It would be kind of like saying my home phone line is cheaper than cell phone service so I won't be getting a cell phone.

Not really... I still can't take my laptop with me and hook up to Cox or Bellsouth while sitting in my car, pulled over on some street, using Google for directions. Earthlink addresses an area that Bellsouth and Cox have failed to address.

As for Bellsouth's "WiMax" network... You have to lug around their receiver and have access to a 120VAC outlet to power it, so it doesn't really work for portability.

Earthlink fills a gap that needs to be filled - mobile broadband that faster than cell services.

That's still a chunk of equipment to carry around compared to having a wireless receiver built into a laptop or just pulling out a PCMCIA card.

Bellsouth's Wimax makes much more sense for people who are stationary and can't get DSL or are permanently installing it in their vehicle (ie - corporate vehicles), but not the average mobile tech user.

What is the uplink capacity per square mile of the new WiFi network ? How much of the area does it cover that the city wants to install 100's of additional surveillance cameras in ? How much of the capacity is available for surveillance cameras ?

(Yes, I know that conventional IP-based video surveillance cameras are a terrible bandwidth hog. But www.BoundlessS.com >> Wireless has a new solution for that.)
