Outages pose regular problems for the company
(old news - 12:02PM Sunday Dec 31 2006)
tags: telco
Qwest customers had reason to be upset this past weekend when the company’s fiber optic lines experienced an outage which caused the loss of cell phone service, internet connection and use of machines such as ATMs and credit card processors. The Daily Times reported that this is not the first time that Qwest has experienced such problems in the area and in fact that the company’s failure to invest money into improvements has resulted in lawsuits by the New Mexico state government. The outage affected much of the Farmington, New Mexico area, disrupting business and creating concern that Qwest customers may not be able to access services in the case of an emergency due to the lack of communication caused by the outage.

Hey wait a minute, I thought only the old copper plant can break. Isn't fiber supposed to be perfect?

That hasn't been true for quite some time now.

Maybe...

Would it be possible for New Mexico to enact some laws making it easier and/or giving incentives for other companies to provide telephone service? Perhaps the threat of Qwest losing its most profitable customers by competitive cherry picking might give it an incentive to improve service.

Real problem is fiber diversity....

.....and that costs big bucks to remedy. And will take a long time to do. Good luck Qwest customers.

Typical scenario:
Farmer or rancher digs up and cuts fiber.
and then
quote:
Qwest's central offices lack fiber route diversity, meaning that when one line is damaged, an entire service area can go down.

NM isn't alone in that arena. We have the same problems up here, as AT&T/Charter only have one or two back hauls out of the area.

As we slam them for not putting in fiber

It was the fiber that broke!

Personally I have had 2 "Outages" (After install) in the past 8 years I have had US West/Qwest DSL.

One was a few months ago, kinda angered me because their automated system would take my phone number and tell me they knew it was broke and would be fixed by 5pm. When I called back at 5:30 it told me it would be fixed by 5, when I escalated it they told me there was no record of me having any problems!

Other one was on "Black Friday" 2002 and I was NOT a happy camper, makes you wonder about their upgrade schedule.

Wowsy. You post twice in a row under different anonymous names in support of a cable company.

I nominate you for a high position in the Comcast_bootlickers club - you're a natural

Well call out the National Guard!!!

According to the article it was down for around 6 hours. This from a clearly objective and non-biased article that starts out with "Qwest failed its customers again Friday...".

News Flash: Things break. They take time to fix, and it sometimes takes even longer for the higher-ups to be filled in after the fact. Fiber gets cut, muxes go bad, ATM switch cards go down, etc. True, six hours is long for someone affected by an outage (I mean, Applebees took longer to run credit cards! Time for Martial Law to be declared!). However, by the problem is identified, a tech dispatched, troubleshooting finds the problem, parts are located and replaced or cut fiber spliced... six hours isn't completely out of the question; especially on a holiday weekend.

Anyone knows of a telco that never has similar outages, be sure to let me know; sure would sound like a nice place to get a job.

Re: Well call out the National Guard!!!

This is not an isolated incident. Qwest has had a general history of being slow, with bad latency awful dating back to prehistoric times.

Re: Well call out the National Guard!!!

It wouldn't be an isolated incident for any carrier- they all have the same types of issues.

My problem is the horribly biased article, which sites as evidence of some kind of trend a 6 hour fiber outage, a cable cut, a fiber cut, and another outage of unstated duration. Two of the four outages cited were cuts- fiber and cable cuts can't be blamed on Qwest; and if the cut is between the CO and the customer, no amount of redundancy will prevent it. The worst outcome they could site related to this recent outage? Applebees ability to run credit cards

Latency is sometimes up to 32ms higher due to interleaving, but more stable than many cable connections that numerous users have complained has major fluctuations in both latency and throughput.

Re: A rose

Qwest is rated as the lowest performing RBOC's in the country, with very little investment dollars into new plant. Speaking with various Qwest technicians, they even admit the fact that the company has not been infusing more funds into upgrades. Not to worry though. Qwest is on the way out. Good possibility of AT&T(at&t) gobbling them up. This would make more sense for at&t to do this since Qwest separates at&t California with at&t in the Midwest. Plus, at&t actually invests money into their networks.

You are ignorant of the facts. Qwest ranked #2 for 2006 Residential All-Distance Telephone Customer Satisfaction for Performance & Reliability in their region.

Since you seem to be some sort of qwest insider, why won't you enlighten us as to what is "going on" at qwest.
And BTW, qwest is a publicly traded company with many stock holders.

Qwest Disappoints Customers, AGAIN!!!

I was a Qwest customer for eight years and everytime that it would rain I had no telephone. There response was that it would cost me $80.00 per hour to find the problem, which was on there end. I live in the desert, we do not have that much rain, and the only time they would show up to repair the problem, the line had already dried out. I finally after 4 years of this constant frustation told Qwest to hit the road. Also, Qwest sells your number, even though they deny this, how would someone get my number if it is unlisted/unpublished the same day that Qwest had hooked it up?

Re: Qwest Disappoints Customers, AGAIN!!!

You are right but, they threaten quite frequently. The whole problem is that Qwest wants to sell the telco here. Their biggest problem is, no takers. The area was established in the 1950's and has seen little improvement since then. It took several petitions in order to have this exchange added to the local Phoenix area code, we sit just 3 miles north of Surprise and most likely will be annexed soon. You would think that Qwest could improve service in smaller communities so not to lose us to cable or some other option. Also not much said about them selling the telephone numbers.

in NM

@qwest.net

qwest failed

I live in farmington and this happens every year with qwest. we don't have a redundant system only the one oc48 line coming from albuquerque. it has now happened twice that the line has been shot up...that is right people have shot the line. once was due to a construction company digging it up in bernillo over two hours away.

it happened a couple years ago on black friday around 10am... no credit card service,800 numbers, cell phone service etc. even 911 gets affected. qwest has truly failed the four corners. there was talks of a second and third line being put in years ago. one from Phoenix and one from grand junction colorado. never happened.

six hours is still six hours. no company can use credit card machines...target, walmart, restaurants etc. can not call 800 numbers. can not do business over the net. it affects our ways of life. just totally failed by qwest.
