Financial Times worried -- Youtube, not so much...
(old news - 12:07PM Tuesday Jan 02 2007)
As part of their fiscal snuggling with the film and music industry, YouTube promised they'd have filters in place to quickly identify and weed out copyrighted content. While they had promised the system would be ready by the end of the year, it's a no show, though YouTube and Google insist the system is "on track." While the Financial Times hints at legal action if the system isn't implemented, it's important to remember the music industry now has an ownership stake in YouTube. It's not clear from the article whether this will be an in-house technology or the AA's preferred Audible Magic Copysense device.

Re: Wow...

Whether you like it or not the RIAA, MPAA and TV Producers own the Music/Movies/TV in question. They have a legal right to protect their content and YOU are obligated to pay for their content if you want it and they want to charge for it. If you don't like paying, stop using it. You aren't entitled to enslave a group of people to produce entertainment for you for free.

Well I'll just stick with P2P. They even remove the ads too.

Re: Wow...

Nobody died yet, but it is there content. So if there content exists in your world then you pay for it.

I am sure this has been covered in other threads. But I will say it anyway... If everyone stopped paying for it then it would not exist. Also, every one you steal (meaning using PTP or other methods to take media/content that is protected) the people who actually pay for it (like me) end up paying for yours too!

I don't believe that for a second. But just for laughs, let's assume this happened. We all stopped paying and movies/music etc came to a halt. How is this a bad thing? I'm sorry but when idiotic companies are paying some actors $1,000,000 per episode, we've got a serious problem. When a musician makes enough money from 1 album to live 800 lifetimes....we've got a serious problem.

Let them stop making this stuff. It won't be long before the entire process begins again and maybe this time we'll get it right. I've made my point before about how actors/actresses/musicians etc don't need even HALF of what they make to live comfortably. Do you honestly think a Bentley would cost as much as it does if it wasn't for these spoiled brats? This happens because we ALLOW it to happen. Why the hell does Celine Dion need what...$3 million/year to do her show in Vegas? Actually...I think it's much much more than $3 million/year. Either way, it's ridiculous to think that these people (who by the way are a dime a dozen these days as nearly 1 person out of 5 can either sing/act/write) deserve to be paid more than enough to last several generations. Even $1 million a year is more than generous for these people seeing as the average person makes what? $50-$60 thousand/year? What a freakin' joke!

Sounds like some kind of communist manifesto.

What's next? Anyone who earns more money that you should be prevented from doing so?

Sounds like someone is oblivious to all the life-threatening diseases that plague humanity. Or all the children that starve. Or all the countries who can't even afford schools for their children. And what are we doing? We're paying people $1,000,000+ per episode for a show that lasts what? 4-8 years? You do the math. The fact that you think it's OK these people make that type of money for something that isn't remotely worth it's weight in gold is disheartening.

Contrary to popular belief, 80% of these "celebrities" shell out donations to charities only because they HAVE to, to avoid getting their asses kicked by taxes. Educate yourself my friend.

I agree. Everyone ends up paying for tv shows and radio. They get to pay those people all that money because of advertising, which is then payed for by use. The consumer gets to pay this crap in the end by way of higher costs of products that are advertise on these tv shows and radio stations. Companies don't pay for this advertising, we the consumer do. Its a vicious circle.

industry won't sue

If youTube fails due to lawsuits it will be the end of sites like this forever. The industry has money to gain from youTube and therefore won't kill it off.

Anyone else thinking...

that RIAA/MPAA ownership participation creates proprietary interest/ownership in/of the rights to independently produced original ideas, story lines and other intellectual property uploaded by 'at large' participants in the YouTube experience? If you are an original talent, have produced and elected to publish your work on YouTube, are there any protections for your rights of ownership, copyright, trademark, content? Any compensation to the participants from advertising revenues raked in by Google/YouTube? Or, is most of the stuff posted on YouTube the redirected/misappropriated work of 'others'? Just curious...not making any judgments.
