Palm Treo 750 US Launch
And Sprint finally gets the Motorola Q...
For smartphone and mobile broadband junkies, it looks like Cingular and Palm will be selling the Treo 750 online starting January 8th for $399 with a two year service agreement (Engadget has all the details and promotional flyers). Also announced this week: the Motorola Q, an exclusive for Verizon Wireless customers since May of 2006, will be available to Sprint customers starting in early February.

How does the 750 compare.....

to the Cingular 8525? I see both use Windows Mobile 5.0.

Just 2 different styles to choose from. Some will prefer the treo for it's front mounted keyboard. Others will prefer the 8525 for the larger aspect screen. Just depends on what you are planning to do with it I'd imagine.

Palm has added various tweaks to WM5 that make it easier to use with one hand, as well as a threaded SMS/MMS app like the one on PalmOS Treos. The 8525 has Wi-Fi and the 750 does not, and the 8525's camera is a little better than the 750.

Hmmm...

Last I heard, Palm does NOT have multi-threaded application support in its PalmOS Treo phones. The Treo 650/680 Smartphones use a PalmOS v5 Release (Garnet).

Multi-thread application doesn't appear until PalmOS v6 Release (Cobalt).

I meant threaded in that it shows messages in "thread" format, not that it multithreads.

The 750 has the better form factor in my opinion, but the 8525 has Wi-fi. Those are the two main differences for me.

TOS?

Does Sprint have a bad TOS like Verizon (no streaming video, no streaming audio, BW caps, etc.)? If not, I'd get the Q with Sprint. The only thing keeping me back from Verizon is the horrid TOS/AUP.

Nope, sprint doesn't crack down like Verizon. Their TOS is much looser on bandwidth usage. They also encourage you to stream video and music. That said, I wouldn't go overboard with the bandwidth either. Save the Torrents for home

Our company uses Sprint and Verizon with the PPC-6700. The sprint phones come with drivers and a dialing program so you can tether the phone to the computer and use it as a highspeed modem. The Verizon phones do not come with the driver and dial program because it is against their TOS to tether the phone to the computer and use it as a high speed modem. They want you to purchase a separate card and pay $60/month. However, it can be done on the Verizon phones, but its against your TOS, so be careful of your bandwidth on Verizon.

Cingular 8525

I looked at that phone and decided to get the T-Mobile MDA instead. Same phone-better internet option. How about $29.95 monthly for GPRS/EDGE(unlimited usage) access as well as unlimited T-Mobile HotSpot(WiFi) usage where offered. Way better deal than Cingulars data package($49.00 a month).
