Build Your Own VoIP Network
'Marketing geniuses' will have better luck...
Users in our forums direct your attention to this VoIP User post that goes through the steps necessary to build a VoIP provider -- ignoring the question of whether that really makes sense in what's becoming a saturated and very competitive market. It's still a good read, discussing everything from idea gestation and backbone creation to session border control and NAT traversal. Their first rule: "If you're a marketing genius, you have a greater chance of success with your new VoIP company than if you are a technical genius."

We just dont need it

It is quite interesting that you could do this yourself; however, with Vonage (my fav!) and all the others out there, it would be like Deawoo: yet another cheap Asian car maker.

IMHO, this is one of the few areas we don't need more providers in. What I want to know is how can I start my own wireless ISP?

Actually this could be a great thing to those who want to create private VOIP networks. Without ever having to use a third party provider and can have offices inter-connected over a PBX system.

Good point. You could keep your small business connected without being raped by POTS.

half cut off

Half of the page is cut off and there's no side scroll bar at the bottem. Is it really worth the read if you can only read half the paragraphs?

Can't compete w/ Vonage

As a complementary product to Internet Access, this is a great idea. I have worked the numbers a million times over and can not reach a price point that is close to Vonage, Sunrocket, etc.

Would I offer better support, more features and higher quality than Vonage? Absolutely, but 99% of the residential market are choosing VoIP for price savings only.

Bottom line is [PSTN Access(PRI)+Bandwidth/Collocation+CPE] must be less than [Total Revenue (MRC&NRC)]. You either need a complementary product to subsidize the cost(i.e. Internet access) or a TREMENDOUS amount of volume to make it profitable. That is why the Cable Companies will win and Vonage will die.
