Qwest CEO: Customers Will Get 'Lots of Bandwidth' in 2007
Or not...
by Karl Bode Thursday 11-Jan-2007 tags: dsl · Fiber · business · bandwidth · telco · TVIP
Qwest is "very focused" on driving "lots of bandwidth" to consumers in 2007 and will budget 40% of its capital spending on that effort, says Qwest CEO Richard Notebaert. As we've mentioned, Qwest is circulating a new RFP exploring FTTH and VDSL expansion. Given their financial shape and size, we've long guessed they'd likely follow AT&T's lead and stick with copper -- and only offer IPTV if it's a smashing success for AT&T.

Notebaert confirms as much: "We’re more focused on fiber-to-the-node because our outside plant is in very good shape and we can get very high speeds out of it if our RTU (remote terminal unit) is in the right location and we feed the RTU with fiber." He also defends trying to shove high definition programming through VDSL. "If you take an HD (high definition) compressed circuit – MPEG-4 – and you really compress it in the lab today you can get a very good picture, I can’t tell the difference, of a basketball game at about 6 megs," he argues.

Have you tried contacting Qwest, or used the Qwest forum? There are numerous customers who have successfully gotten interleave removed from their DSL circuit albeit it involved time and contacting the right people.

Re: Interleave

Yes I have, I'd need to get really aggressive and pursue it up the chain. Just don't have the time. Wish they'd make it easier.

Re: Interleave

If they turned off Interleaving, and offered me speeds 10Mbps+ and at least 1Mbps of upload I would go back to them. When I had them they could only offer me 7Mbps/720Kbps. Also my interleaving would add 32ms to ANY location. They change those 2 things and it would awesome. Only time will tell.

Re: Interleave

They could "only" offer you "7mb /720" ....?

Dude.. you're on the top of their tiers already! And, that's faster than what most cable customers get!

While this maybe true, Comcast is the only other provider in the area. They offered me 8000/768 for only a few $$ more a month, and their pings are much lower. Plus I have the "PermaBoost" so I usually get 18-32Mbps vs. the 7Mbps W/ interleaving that Qwest is offering. That extra $5/month is worth it.

Re: Interleave

Who do I e-mail and what forum? I've already been up a down the Qwest forums. No definitive answer there. I have a nice clean line to, could easily do without interleave.

On another note, no cable in my neck of the woods, DSL is pretty much the only option. I'd love to see FTTH bought doubt us rural folks will see that anytime soon. I'm lucky to get 7/896.

Re: Interleave

Read this thread:»Qwest Does Listen, Qwest Does Care, There is a god.

The exact answer is not there. They do not want the exact answer there as it may lead to abuse. If you review the thread, and use some common sense, you will figure it out.

A means of making your line more robust at the cost of a bit of delay (aka latency and sometimes called lag although lag is really another issue. Twitch gamers want *very* low latency to help keep up with the game server many miles away and to get the jump on any opposition).

from »www.wlug.org.nz/Interleaving (spelling corrected to American standard):
A DSL frame is broken into two sections a "Fast" section and an "Interleave" section. In the fast section packets are sent with the FEC information sent directly after the packets. In the interleave section packets are all sent, then the FEC information is sent for each packet. This means that with interleaved packets you must wait for the entire frame to arrive before you can process any packets, but it moves the error correction information away from the data so data corruption is unlikely to take out both the FEC and the actual data. With Interleaving disabled, the FEC is sent directly after the packet, so a packet can be dispatched immediately after it's received (you don't have to wait for the entire frame to arrive), however the FEC is close to the payload data and if the data is corrupted then the FEC is probably corrupt as well and thus it's unable to correct the data.

Error correction that automatically adds 32ms to your latency BEFORE you even get out on the net.

I would just like a DSL connection again. Currently using Cox Cable internet, and the new-ish development I live in still doesn't get service from qwest for DSL, even though there are a few remote terminals and stacks in the area.

Of course, calling customer service and using their online chat are useless, and I have gotten the same canned response for over a year.

I guess I need to move to a more affluent area to be serviced by Qwest -- oh well -- I might have to be a cable monkey for awhile, just cause Qwest seems to be lagging on rolling out service.

Skip TV......let other worry about that

I use to argue that the Bells have to offer TV to stay in business. Which in all actually, is not going to be a real gold mine for them. So why not skip it....

Let others sell the TV....focus on what they do best and sell bandwidth. Install a FTTH network and price it per gig. Long term wise with generations of users growing up, this is really the best model. Especially if Net Neutrality holds.

Just think of all the headaches and liability you could avoid. Just think of all the lobbying money you could save.

Just a thought.

if qwest offered a substantially better broadband internet service, comcast's service would be dead on the line, and they'd just be a soap opera provider again.

which would suit me fine.

Uhh, what an idiot...

You've got to be kidding me. Well, then again, this comes from a telco's mouth. They wouldn't know a good HD picture if one hit them right between the eyes. This is the most idiotic comment I have seen about compressing HD video. Either the TV wasn't HD, or he needs his vision checked, because there will ALWAYS be a noticable difference between raw, and compressed HD pictures when you look at it on a true HD set. Why do they even advertise it as HD, when it's compressed. You can't re-broadcast a 15Mhz signal as anything less than 15Mhz, unless you plan on calling it something else other than HD. I just love the fact that someone will pay a few thousand, in some cases, on an HDTV, and then go out and get the crappiest HDTV provider and DVD player for it. I also love those folks who get an HDTV and don't get ANY HD channels for it. The guy talking in this article sounds like one of these people.

Isn't MPEG 4 what Directv is using for their HD? They just released their MPEG 4 HD DVR.

I don't know of any MSOs that are broadcast high-def in uncompressed form, but claiming that HD in MPEG-4 at 6 Mbps looks is unbelievable....the numbers I consistently hear are 8 to 10 Mbps.
