I've always heard that 802.11n was meant for speeds somewhere around 200 - 300 Mbps... effectively translating into a "real-world" speed of about 100 Mbps or so. 802.11n was always meant as a wireless replacement for Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps), not Gigabit Ethernet. | |

I still have doubts as to whether or not these pre-N devices will become full-N with a simple firmware upgrade...
Well, I was thinking of just purchasing a pre-N router since the IEEE hasn't done anything on this much...but with this news, I may wait.
Any ideas of how fast the transfer rate will be, and the maximum range? I would suspect that both of these would be slightly higher than pre-N. | |

| Re: Hope new drafts address the interference issues I can't find much info about N specifications, but if it uses multiple channels on 2.4 then there is no way around it. If it needs more than one channel then it's for the higher speeds, but pollutes the spectrum.
But if it doesn't need multiple channels then it has to be the MIMO antennas.
The only way I can see to resolve this somewhat is using the 5Ghz spectrum and not 2.4Ghz. Or just shipping them with larger, directional antennas.

I would like to get a N router just to mess with their signal. Every year my connection gets worse becuase my neighbors get wireless and have no idea they are giving the whole neighboorhood free wireless or messing up other peoples connections. | |

What's the law on that in S.C. because in VA it is a felony. Wouldn't want to encourage people to take chances like that before exploring the law in their areas.

Do you have a set standard as to how many people in your area can have wireless so it stops "messing with your connection?" did you lick the wireless to make it yours first or something?
I fail to see what you are getting at here. You matter and they don't? How is another neighbor infringing on YOUR right and YOUR alleged airspace?

I wouldn't hold my breath. The only company who has promised an upgrade to the ratified standard (via hardware OR firmware upgrade) is Asus as reported here...we'll see if they live up to that promise. | |

| pre-empt wimax it looks like they are holding to their OPTIMISTIC timetable to have equipment certified by 6/2007.. good for them..
wimax was toying with certifying consumer devices once demand dried up from wireless carriers-albeit a range crippled version (can't have a net of wimax homes competing with wireless carriers on internet access/voip) | |
