A Fight For Earthlink Wi-Fi in San FranciscoMayor wants current plan approved, board may have other ideas... ( old news - 12:38PM Friday Jan 19 2007) tags: business · wireless · municipalThe deal between Earthlink and San Francisco has been hashed out, and as it stands, EarthLink would pay the city about $2 million during the first four years of the contract for the right to build and operate the network. In conjunction with Google, the company would offer free 300kbps service, or 1Mbps service for $22 a month. Not everybody is pleased, and people who were looking to force the companies to provide more digital divide-bridging perks might derail the plan at an upcoming vote -- something that worries San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. A majority of the Board of Supervisors has to approve the EarthLink contract in a vote early next month. IP Democracy posts a report (pdf) from the Board, which explores the possibility of building their own network, and then allowing multiple ISPs to offer service. The report expresses concern that under the existing plan, low-income users would have to shell out $80 to $200 for CPE. It looks like the board might be eager to put out another RFP, which could scrap the existing plan. Newsom, meanwhile, has issued his own report that promotes dealing with the city's digital divide in conjunction with the Earthlink plan.

Did you properly read the article before you started frothing at the mouth. Google will provide the free Wi-Fi service, Earthlink will provide some of the service for $22 a month and the city will get paid 4 million dollars. Some of the city council want more from Google and Earthlink. Nothing is wrong with bargaining for more than you are willing to accept. Isn't the Creator a dictator, and a communist? Isn't the concept of heaven as portrayed in the New Testament very similar to communist ideals? Maybe Carl Marx pattern communism after the ideals of heaven. | |

He got the idea for communism from they way Jews of old did business: Jacob buys from Joshua, etc. If Jacob is having problems, everyone throws some business his way. It was unspoken business rules among Jewish businesses. We buy from each other unless we don't have it.
Does God believe in communism? No. It doesn't work. The people that create wealth are gonna want to keep it not give everyone a share they didn't earn. Solomon was pretty rich. King David was wealthy. And, so was the guy who built the boat. Yes, God has humor too. And, he really isn't into the Royal thing either. The Jews thought the King of Kings was coming to rule. Yeah, it's the commies. They're the SF city gubmint. The poor people can't even afford shoes, let alone a computer to use on the "free" wi-fi system. The commies use the poor as their wedge to extract something more than what is being offered. The commies just want to find a way to penalize two companies for daring to make a kind offer. Naturally, something's in it for ELN and Google. It's called penetration into a market segment to make money down the line. But the commies want to make sure they get their slush money before anyone else. That's how commies think. "All for me, crumbs for you. And you better be damn well happy you get those."

| Washington, DC is worse If you think San Francisco is bad just imagine if this were in the city of Washington, DC. Not the national government but the city government. They couldn't get a football stadium that the owner was going to pay for all by himself with no city help built (there were some infrastructure improvements that the city would have had to pay for but the area was slated to get them anyway). Now they are still wrangling over a baseball stadium deal that they have contracted to build.
