| Correction to the Summary It appears that the ability to call the local access number isn't limited to Vonage customers:
With V-Access, callers do not need to have a Vonage line to call a Vonage number (or an 800-number) for the price of a local call. The feature is available to anyone.
This is really awesome for friends and family of those that have Vonage. Now here's to hoping that ViaTalk takes notes...

| Re: Correction to the Summary I wonder if you spoof a Vonage number, and call this access number, if it will let you dial a regular telephone number for free... I know Vonage had this issue when they piered with FWD... -- SIPPhone/Gizmo # 17476200648 / PIMPNET Chatline / Ran by Asterisk & Slackware 10.1. | |

| Re: Correction to the Summary Sounds like they created the V-Access product w/ Asterisk boxes. The voice talent they are using is Allison Smith... and she's the voice of Asterisk. »www.theivrvoice.com
Not sure why Vonage would use Allison if they aren't using Asterisk b/c Vonage corporate uses a completely different voice talent.
Since most telcom companies try to use the same voice talent across all their major systems for continuity sake, I wonder if Vonage will be switching the rest of their stuff to Allison.
Another possibility... Vonage outsourced this feature from some other existing VoIP provider instead of doing it themselves and thus got what they were given. This happens a lot these days... and is one of the clues I look for when calling into a call center. When the voices keep switching around, I know I've ended up in yet another outsourced call center will be generally useless.
PS... In case you ever wondered, there are a few other notible voices in the industry. One that comes most to mind is Pam Bassett. She was the voice for 1-800-COLLECT, MCI The Neighborhood, and most everything MCI did that was customer facing. »www.pambassett.com/

Drop outs are usually due to packet loss and high latency. If you have problems with your line, call your ISP... NOT Vonage. Exactly. I have Vonage (3 lines as a matter of fact) and every one is crystal clear, and as good or better than my POTS line. There will be one call out of a few hundred that didn't go through or sounds strange, and a redial fixes it. Same with my cell phone - you get that garballed call once in a blue moon.
Before I had Fios, my Optimum Online connection was fast, but I had some latency, which effected Vonage. -- "When you get lost in your imaginatory vagueness, your forsight becomes a nimble vagrant."

| LOL, ya, call your ISP and tell them about your "high latency" and "packet loss"... see what they say.
You: i have packet loss and high latency. TechSupport: Umm.. ok, is your internet working? You: Yes TechSupport: ok, thank you for your call.
Thats if they don't tell you to un-install the drivers, turn off the modem and let it 'cool down'...

Thats if they don't tell you to un-install the drivers, turn off the modem and let it 'cool down'... Well, if you can produce a tracert showing it's an ISP issue, then they can be concerned. I think their proxy ends in vonage.net so if you ping the block, you might see the latency, but I think you'd be better off pinging the actual proxy. Honestly, to expect your ISP to care if Vonage works is like expecting the IRS to care if you were working when you owed them backed taxes. I can respect why they don't support it either. Unless you have proof on paper, not much will be done, because as far as the backhaul is concerned, they are providing you the pipe. I will wager to say if the problem persists after lowering your bandwidth settings on the vonage page to 30kbps, then the problem isn't your ISP, especially if your speed tests look ok here. -- SIPPhone/Gizmo # 17476200648 / PIMPNET Chatline / Ran by Asterisk & Slackware 10.1.
