D-Link offers up their latest 3G Wi-Fi router, which allows you insert an EVDO broadband card and offers Wi-Fi service wherever you can find a power outlet. The $230 DIR-450 (via Gizmodo) is available now; a HSDPA version (the DIR-451) will be available next month. Keep in mind, using one of these is against Verizon's TOS.

Is Sprint's network EVDO?

Since just about everything is against Verizon's TOS, I'm thinking of going with Sprint. I prefer to stick with VZ, but why have something if you can't use it?

Yes, Sprints network is EVDO and not only that they are ahead of the curve on rollout when compared to Verizon....

Sprints TOS reads almost exactly like a TOS you would expect to read from a wireline provider....they actually let you USE your connection!

No specs or supported cards listed

Oddly there are no specs on what cards are supported, how many ports there are or how many if any usb ports. The market needs more 3G routers at frankly a little better prices. I assume this is a semi replacement for the KR-1 but who knows.

Re: No specs or supported cards listed

If you look at their support site, it has the cards listed. It works great with the Novatel v620 on Verizon.

As of the last time I checked, it's still on first revision of firmware. But it does what it's supposed to. WWAN in, LAN out. Wireless on it is pretty decent too.

It has four 10/100 ports, wireless, and a USB port that I don't remember what it's for.

That is an extremly small list of compatible cards listed.

Kyocera KPC 650
• Novatel V620

Sprint!

That's because Verizon is a TELCO... Sprint is no longer in the telco business... They only do long distance and wireless. They encourage the sharing. On their webpage they have a link for a linksys router that does the same thing. I've had Sprint for 5 years now. Could not be happier.

What about T-Mobile?

What about T-Mobile's service? How do they compare with this mix?

I just bought a bunch of Sony GC cards. They all support EVDO with T-Mobile. This would be perfect for me to use and install at home.

Re: What about T-Mobile?

T-Mo is is still using EDGE. T-Mo has plans to move to HSDPA sometime this year or next. I wouldn't hold my breath.

This router has been available for several months now. Since at least the beginning of November.

The KR1 (made by DLink, branded/sold by Kyocera) is a far better router IMO. That is the router they are focusing their efforts on. The list of supported cards/phones continues to increase. Can't say the same thing about this DLink model.

Re: ~

I'm using a DIR-450 right now and it works great for me using Alltel's EVDO service w/ a kyocera kpc-650 card.

I've used both the Merlin S720 (cardbus device), and the U720 (USB Device) in the KR1. Firmware upgrades for the KR1 come quite quickly, and it is truly a great device. I've installed 4 of these at customer locations and none of them had nothing but good things to say about the service and the 802.11 network provided by the device.

Verizon TOS is silly.

People like Insder See Profile and thender2 See Profile know what I mean.

They have a TOS, but enforcement of the TOS is what really matters... which is why Verizon's TOS banning these devices shouldn't worry people too much.
