| how long do the Semi truck ones last i wonder, considering a perminate installation can go several hours on batteries id imagine that it wouldnt take much of a generator to keep a moble site going for a few days.

Again, as mentioned in previous Verizon threads, it would be nice if they stopped ripping out the copper, and started using it to power their ONT device, instead of charging it to the customers bill, or relying on the customers power to always be on. Everyone knows the phone usually still works (land lines that is) when the power is out, and thats because the power is generated by the phone company. I feel, for the sake of emergency situations where power failure could take days to restore, that Verizon should use the old copper to power their equipment. It's not like I get to keep the ONT if I canceled, so why should I pay for the power going to the unit if I never had to pay for the power on my phone line before?
Am I wrong, or does this make sense??? It costs more to rip all that old copper out anyway (as in more time to pay a tech to remove it, and more waste of good wire).

Copper is very valuable as raw metal scrap, currently. The whole aim is to eventually get rid of the old plant as I'm sure it costs them a good amount to maintain it, as well as the backup power system.
While it does seem kind of stupid not to keep at least a minimal pohone capacity for an extreme emergency, such as a nuke attack, I'm sure Verizon as well as other telcos will not be deterred since profit on our backs is the ultimate name of the game for them.
Then again, AT&T's plan of using their copper drops to deliver their service DOES leave this capability in place, interestingly enough. | |

That copper wire is worth so much that thieves have been ripping it off the poles and selling it as scrap metal. Copper is worth a lot of money, and it would be a waste for them to just power their network with it. The entire purpose behind going with FIOS is to GET RID of copper which is harder to maintain and more expensive.
They aren't ripping anyones copper out yet. It will probably be years before they even start doing that. You can request to keep your copper phone line if you want.

The amount of copper you get from 30-40m of 22-24 awg pair isn't worth the trouble for scrap value.
There are currently no laws requiring fair access to fiber, only copper. | |

Thank you CopperMux for enlightening the scores of almost "drones" now on the copper issue.
And for the umpteenth time I would like to point out that most backbone connections now are over Fiber, so even if YOUR line is powered, whats to say you can call outside the C.O. in such an extreme situation after the fiber has ripped off the poles? (Heck, even when its buried, backhoes are quite voracious... But that's a whole different issue entirely.) | |

If you mean a Verizon Central Office (then BA) 48 VDC battery backup failed it's because someone screwed up really,really,really bad.
If you are saying people in private offices lost power to their phone systems ,so what?911 lines and commerce lines are 2 different topics.

The heavier power cable yields around 90% copper with minimal processing fees(12 pack of Bud and a Buck knife will work at home.)

I can't wait to here what the elderly community does when analog OTA goes off in a few years.
It's not like Verizon is sitting down and conjuring up ways that they can try to screw over Grandma and Grandpa. If they don't want to lose their fiber, don't sign up for FiOS. Verizon is not taking away fiber at this time so they are not being forced that route unless it's a completely new install.
If you are relying on telephone service to be available in case of an emergency during a power outage, it's a false sense of security.

I agree.I just see this as yet another case of a big corporation buying out small local companies that have provided services for generations (using government subsidies for the copper backbone)and stripping out all but the most profitable ones.
It's like Microsoft,Symantec,etc except eliminating the countries most viable emergency communication system is a lot more dangerous than discontinuing software updates..

| more investment.. This is a good idea.. each region should have mobile emergency facilities in a geographic area to support disaster relief with mobile cell sites, landlines, and other portable infrastructure. I doubt every part of Verizon land has these portable facilities.. | |
