Sprint EVDO Upgrades
Can the company continue to compete?
by KathrynV Sunday 04-Feb-2007
As was pointed out earlier in the week, Verizon Wireless just announced their EVDO Revision A upgrades. This contrasts with Sprint which our users pointed out is upgrading to Rev 0 before upgrading again to Rev A, although upgrades to Rev A have begun in select areas. Information Week reports that Sprint’s upgrade (which covers 24 locations in the U.S.) offers slightly faster upload and download speeds than the Verizon Wireless upgrades. However the report also suggests that Sprint may have bit off more than it can chew and will have to work to maintain the customer satisfaction of the users who have subscribed to receive the services of these upgrades.

Sprint and Verizon EVDO RevA networks the same

I work for the EVDO RevA supplier ,not Nortel! and Sprint and Verizon have virtually the same network. Got to love Marketing!

Re: Sprint and Verizon EVDO RevA networks the same

Check out evdoforums.com. Sprint EVDO is clearly favored over Verizon. Verizon has the 5GB limit while Sprint does not and Sprint does indeed outperform Verizon on average.

They don't have the exact same network. Verizon has a mix of 800mhz towers, which are spread further apart than Sprint's all 1900mhz network. Verizon has a much higher user/tower ratio than Sprint and will long term, this is why Sprint will be able to offer more bandwidth.

Look at real world performance differences...

Sprint is killing Verizon on average performance.

Customer Service vs network vs price

Sprint does by far have one of the worst customer service rankings of all the major cellular companies. However guess who has always had one of the highest rated cellular networks? Virgin Mobile. Virgin Mobile uses Sprint's network as they simply resell Sprint service. Part of the reason Sprint themselves didn't score as high on network quality is because their poor customer service.

Also, Sprint's data service is one of the best. Not only is it a tad bit faster, it's also open for the handsets. Verizon phones are BREW locked down, however Sprint phones are open where I can load my own ringtones or apps on the phone. Sprint even allows people to send their custom made ringtones to their phones via the data network so no USB connection to the computer is required.

Lastly price is the winning factor for Sprint. Unlimited data for $15 per month can't be beat. Also tethering the phone to a laptop for computer access is ok as long as it's not done very often and not used a lot. Just sign on to check e-mail is fine for example, but they would notice if you start streaming porn.

their phone as a modem plans are top notch too....smokes every other wireless carrier! $40 a month and you actually get to USE your connection without fear of them saying you are using it too much.....

Re: Customer Service vs network vs price

This is a completely foolish article. Sprint initially stated that their entire network will be Rev A by end of 2007. They have sent e-mails too their reps stating that they are ahead of schedule and hope to have all major markets complete by march....... way ahead of Verizon.

Sprint LOL

Are you people serious! I would never give Sprint props. Sprint is the leader in dropped calls! I guess you get what you pay for. Sprint is the most horrible service and the leader in churn rate. While Verizon has the lowest churn rate in the industry. Just looking @ the facts Verizon Wireless 1.1% churn rate. Sprint is about 4% LOL

Maybe in your area. There are many neighborhoods where Sprint is just as good or even better than Verizon. If you live in one of those areas and do no traveling, then Sprint is golden.

This whole "X carrier is the worst" is ridiculous... it's all based on location, system, and the handset itself. Some people say that Sprint sucks while other swear by it. Some say Verizon is the best while others say it's the worst.

What does this say? It's a users unique experience... so please, can we forget the "X cellular company sucks"... because it's about as useless as tits on a hog.

Well let's compare.

Sprint kicks butt on price
Sprint kicks butt on limits
Sprint kicks butt on quality of DO service
Sprint has less than stellar customer service

Verizon has good customer service
Verizon has so many add on charges you could get a car cheaper than their service with all options selected.

While I like good customer service(the maybe 1 time a year I call it) It is not worth the extra cash month after month. Noone cares about churn besides the carriers.
Churn is driven by customer service and we all agree Verizons is better because with what they charge they can afford it.

After all that I have both a sprint blackberry and a Verizon V that will be cancelled in 3 glorious days(contract up).
I prefer sprint because of price and service is top notch but verizon was fine (same service higher price).

Where's my wimax?

Props to Both but don't diss one or the other unless you have been there.

This is about data, not voice. But I have Sprint voice service and have no issues. In data cards, Verizon doesn't come close to competing with Sprint.

Nextel's churn rate is causing the 4%, not Sprint CDMA, which is below 2%.

Re: Sprint LOL

Nextel's churn rate will increase dramatically as Forsee is planning on using Boost Communications to compete with companies like MetroPCS. Which is unlimited calling and they already have a nationwide network.

The pirates will keep running knowing they are facing 10 years in prison and a fine of... oh, wait... wrong thread.

I believe that Sprint's less-restrictive policy on downloading is ideal for power users on non-corporate accounts. Slingplayer, VNC/Windows Terminal Svcs, etc. Sprint is also the clear leader in overall bandwidth available per user due to less saturation/site and better backhaul.

I'm not sure how Boost competing with MetroPCS has anything to do with Sprint CDMA... Boost is a prepaid product of Nextel, anyway.

Boost is an offering from Nextel, which is part of Sprint. So

If Boost changes their marketing approach, they'll probably gain a lot of churn (at least initially), which will then drive up Sprint's overall churn numbers.

Sprint's support doesn't always suck, just often. All I do is call another rep if need be - no biggey. But in every other category, Sprint is light years ahead the other carriers when it comes to data. They should just sell off voice to an MVNO and focus on data. They are superior to all when it comes to data, and we use all of the carriers.

BTW, one huge advantage of Sprint EVDO is that they roam on Alltel EVDO while Verizon does not (only 1xRTT for Verizon users.) Alltel has massive rural EVDO coverage in several midwest and southern states.

I think Sprint is getting it together but the Nextel debacle is not helping. Get most Nextel users over to CDMA and they'll be OK. In the meantime, I wouldn't even give Verizon one single consideration for data with that 5GB/month limit. I use 10GB+ on Sprint with no issues and the Alltel EVDO roaming has been a great advantage for me.

Re: Sprint LOL

As an Alltel customers I love roaming on Sprint EVDO. While I find it not to be any beter than alltel service, I find my roaming options to be better than that of verizon. I would never use sprint for voice but I am all for continueing the evdo roaming agreement between sprint and alltel. As I have downloaded 10gb+ on both alltel's native network evdo and sprint evdo towers.

Re: Sprint LOL

I just bought a Sierra 595 card from Sprint. They don't have any rev A coverage in Roanoke, Plano or Arlington that I have been able to find and they are 1/3 Verizon's speed in Roanoke with 100/40, 1/2 in Plano with 200/60 and a little faster in Arlington with 1Mb/138. I went with Sprint because of Verizon's 5GB limit but I'm not happy with the speed so far. These speeds are the average of 3 tests back to back with 3 tests on Verizon's network with a PC 5220 card on the same laptop. The NIC mode of the Sierra card is great!
