Shrugs off cable industry capacity worries...
(old news - 01:48PM Monday Feb 05 2007)
tags: bandwidth · cable
In discussing the company's financial state last week, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts brushed aside talk of a capacity crunch, insisting that the cable giant had ample bandwidth. "Frankly, we have plenty of capacity right now, and we will have plenty of capacity, in our opinion, for the next six to 12 months, given the available products," says Roberts. While Comcast works on preparing networks for the upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0, the company has released Powerboost -- a stop gap measure that offers users excess capacity at the onset of a large file download. They're also slowly exploring switched digital video (SDV).

Re: Bring me bandwidth!

sorry dude, no new "products" (like increased b/w?) for a while:

"Frankly, we have plenty of capacity right now, and we will have plenty of capacity, in our opinion, for the next six to 12 months, given the available products," Roberts said.

sure sounds like "no speed upgrades" to me.

Hey if you offered me 50Mbs for $100 a month I'm in! You should do some big package like AT&T had an unlimited plan for a short period of time.

Interesting. I took that the other way as in he was talking about their deployed infrastructure products (DOCSIS 1.0/2.0 modems and the CMTS). I guess he could have also been talking about the "consumer products" and that if they don't increase speeds, they have plenty of capacity.

I consider powerboost a form of speed increase, considering my average is 9 to 12 Mbps, on a 6 meg tier. I have seen on the same modem operating on the 8 meg tier run at 16 to 20Mbps, but that was before I downgraded. It's all good, we don't even have FIOS here, and the cable company with, or without powerboost is still faster than the only other options around. I'd say they are doing good for now, by not freaking out before DOCSIS 3.0 comes out. The stock is doing nothing but rising too. I don't think there is much to worry about, or even legitimatly complain about, considering nobody is doing it better, or cheaper, nationwide. I would say the only threat is Verizon's FIOS/TV/Phone product, but only because internet speed, as the other products are basically the same.

Even if we did get faster internet speeds, however, you wouldn't see it much, as Comcast is the largest ISP, and if it were launched globally, most sites we goto don't even allow the full speed. Even now, I only get powerboost on 30% of webpages. I get more speed thru torrents.

From what I have read in the local media, 60% of Comcast's bandwidth on the coax is the Analog TV sig. Once they dump analog and make everyone get a box for TV, they will have plenty of whatever to mess with. They are already testing some cities here in MI at 100% digital. No more analog TV.

I don't have a problem with that but I wish they would sell me a device that I could put at the demarc to convert the subscribed digital channels to equivalent analogs. I read something about a device that was capable of doing this. I'd have no problem picking the top 50 channels if it had a capacity limit.

I really don't yearn for a return to the days when it was common to rent a cable box for $5/month/TV.

if they switch to full digital only broadcasts, i would imagine they would provide the *basic* boxes free of charge.

Re: Bring me bandwidth!

That would be great but I'll believe it when I see them handing out free converter boxes. I would also think that they have to charge or rent because I would need like six of these. Given the cost, I can't imagine they would just give them away for free. I could live with them providing the first n units free and then charging me a one time fee per extra. I just don't want to pay $5/month in perpetuity for every TV in the house.

I didn't read the link thoroughly. Can this box receive the all the digital channels to which I subscribe -- including HBO/Cinemax and the like?

Re: Bring me bandwidth!

sorry. i dont know anyone who has six tv's.... my mistake.

afaik, they will provide the first for free, in the very least. They only cost 90 dollars for them to buy from motorola, so i would imagine that the rent on extra units would be very low... like 1 or two bucks a month.

Re: Bring me bandwidth!

I have three kids. Two have TV cards in their PCs and use Windows Media Center. In a couple years I'll have three kids with TV cards.

It's great because Media Center has parental controls so they cannot watch bad stuff and it allows them to record their shows when they air. Then they get to watch them AFTER they finish homework, sports, boy scout duties and chores. It also allows me to periodically review what they are watching so I can "come up to speed" so I'm not in the dark when they start using new "in" phrases. It's much better than sticking an "open" TV in their room. Plus they use the computer for homework, e-mail and it teaches them basic 21st century skills while my squid proxy keeps them safe from bad sites.

I suppose $1/month/TV would be fine but $2/month/TV is significant ($10/month) since right now I don't pay ANYTHING with cable-ready TVs and the analog service.

That box is no longer allowed, as it doesn't support CableCARDs.

The waiver that Comcast requested (and the FCC denied) was based on this same small STB (the all-digital version of the longtime favorite Motorola (and before that, GI/Jerrold) IMPULSE analog STB). The FCC requires that *all* STBs act as CableCARD host devices past a *date certain* (later this year). So the DCT-7xx is a dead duck.

If they do that, I'd be the first one to call up Comcast and cancel my cable service. Stupid converter boxes. Don't need them, don't want them!

Be careful when you order it. Even with upgrading to their business accounts you will find you don't have any additional bandwidth allocated to you. You can hit their "unlimited use for a flat monthly fee" download limit and get booted.

I'm aware of 7 people in my neighborhood they have booted in the next two months now. Seems Comcast has plenty of capacity. They simply kick customers off and smile happily in their own little world.

As I said, be careful.

Yea.. plenty of capacity... as long as they can continue to fool their customers into thinking they are actually getting 20mbps+ every single second of every single day!

Re: Plenty of Capacity = Thanks to Powerboost

Well powerboost does make more peak bandwidth avaible thearetically, rather than have a bunch of users slowly suck bandwidth and degrade the node, powerboost gives slices/bursts, making it seem to the end user like its much faster and getting rid of that user's request quicker.

Bandwidth is crunched

all i know is in my area its a 750 plant and there pusing it far beyond that point. all our amps are only at 750 and there running them around 780-790 siganls drop hard and they consistantly add hd channels trying to keep up with dish, but in doing so we have many compression issues that no one seams to know how to fix. micro blocking and tiling that still has color in them with smugdes then the picture changes and its gone form not enough BANDWIDTH in that 256 qam channel cause theres to many channels in it and there rate shaping, and thats only in our digi line up. must be talking about 860 systems or he has no i idea whats really going on with his company.

Keep on lying

What a liar.

From another former Comcast customer:

These retards disconnected me also. I've start a blog and have been thinking of building a satire of the experience for publication on youtube.

My wife and I are trying to get them back as they are the ONLY show in town. I plan on making that a thing of the past. We're going to City Council meetings and will be pushing utopianet.org to our area plus I'm looking at wireless internet.

Oh and our new blog is at »comcastissue.blogspot.com

People have no clue how pathetic Comcast customer service is. We've even spoke with Bill Gephart about this. One of his reporters is currently going through the Comcast mire to figure out what's going on. I feel bad for inflicting this on him but I'm hoping to get the word out.

Like you I'm a heavy user. Been accused of many nefarious things. What's sad is people don't realize there are many legit reasons for running bittorrent and other download services. Most respectable services these days provide p2p for downloading products.

I wish I could go with Verizion Fios or some other service. You are fortunate to have an alternative. Heck, even Clark Howard said I should fire Comcast and provided me a couple of links to articles he's written about them. Not his favorite provider I guess.

Anyway... check out the blog and if you read slashdot.org you might see my article out there also. I'm hoping the editors approve it.

Re: I'm AM complaining

Here's a speedtest for you guys of what my speed is like in the evenings. Since Powerboost has been turned on in my market the speed as sucked ass each and every day at night. In the mornings it's fine. Oh and before you fancy smancy tech savvy wanabee Comcast techs state that it's probably a problem with my setup, I've also got speedtests to the Comcast speedtest server that show the same questionable crap speeds from Comcrap. I've called each night for the past 3 weeks and complained. Techs have come out with supervisors in tow and they all see the same thing I see. Pretty, nice, new cable from the street to the house and brand new cable in the house... oh and perfect speeds in the mornings and early afternoon. Then they come out after 4pm and scratch their heads when they see the crap speeds. If the CEO thinks they have plenty of bandwidth, he's a fugging moron!!!

Here's the test... enjoy!!!

Rock solid service in South Jersey

CC is the only Broadband that we have available to us that works. I tried DSL, it was down more than it was up. Have had CC HSI for 4 years with Vonage and had 1 issue , when we moved they couldn't get that right. So one hassle, and it was handled in an hour, in 4 years, not bad. And using Vonage all this time, with zero issues, I pay less than I did with Verizon phones and dial up service, so I cannot and will not complain. My speeds are great, even on my laptop, wireless 1 floor below the router.

If that were true...

...Comcast wouldn't be sending out nastygrams threatening their subscribers.

If they need to enforce their AUP because they don't have the capacity, that's fine. Their subscribers agreed to the AUP (at least those who originally signed with Comcast) but Roberts should keep his lying ass shut when it comes to claims of excess capacity.
