EMI Explores DRM-Free Music In talks with online retailers, reports WSJ In early January, reports came in that EMI was considering stripping DRM from their music catalog as a cost-saving measure (seeing as how it's doing little to nothing to stop piracy). Today finds the news reheated as the Wall Street Journal reports the company is in talks with several online retailers over selling unprotected songs online in MP3 format. "London-based EMI asked the retailers to submit proposals by Thursday telling the company what size advance payments they would offer in exchange for the right to sell EMIs music as MP3s," reports MSNBC. EMI calls the reports "speculation." DRM haters say "just do it already."

| | Flac files DRM free Would be the best choice. This would enable one to encode to ones desired bitrate. Such as lame VBR or 320 for home stereo setups or a lower bitrate to fit more music on a portable mp3 player. Simply selling no quality 128 bitrate DRM free mp3's are just as bad as having DRM in the music and won't cut it.
One more thing, open the damn vaults of music out of print and hard to find. Make available music that was exported, or must be imported.
Another sticking point, sell songs individually by artist or entire album. Not purchase entire album or nothing.
Most of today's so called music sucks. Give music fans, what they want at a good price, with no DRM, or watch sales nose dive and P2P increase.
IMO, to compete with P2P, the labels must play on P2P home-field advantage of P2P usage. Offer customers, fast down loadable DRM free music. Offer a wider variety of music, where fans would have to go to to find that rare or odd song, perhaps the entire album.
Make the one or two good songs from today's music available singly, not everyone wants to pay for fluff or filler junk. Last but certainly not least, the cost must be very reasonable.
There is no need to press Cd's. There is no need to include that price in the down loading of music. Art work, Don't want to pay for it. One does not look at it while driving or while jamming tunes at a keg party. Artwork could be an option for those who wish to have it.
Anything less will be sure to fail. -- Its the Democrats fault. In fact it is the Speaker of House Polosi fault. Everything is the Democrats fault. Everything. Just like Everything was the Republicans Fault when they were in power.

| Go for it. I say go for it. Why not sell FLAC too. I'd feel much better about paying a dollar a track, or near album prices for this format. Heck, I wouldn't care if it were even .wma lossless as long as it wasn't restricted.
Bands already do FLAC/mp3 on their own in some cases. I've purchased a few concerts in FLAC format, WELL worth the money spent for a professionally recorded/engineered/mastered recording...
eMusic, though mostly "indie" has a great setup. Granted, they want you to stay subscribed, but you don't have to. You can just sign up, buy away, cancel, and come back again if you really want. I think it says something that they're doing so well by offering reasonably priced tunes, no DRM, and good service.
Besides, if any of the labels were SERIOUS, they'd pay to have even a SMALL bit of research done here.
Get a group of people to buy unprotected music and see if they feel like sharing the files they've paid for. I'd be willing to bet it's less than 1% of those people who would willingly put those files online.
Also, what's the point of having "protection" on any of this stuff when iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, Microsoft, whoever, lets you BURN a freaking regular CD??? I just don't get it. There's no reason to even care about DRM. Obviously there are still files out there that are not protected, being freely traded, and there are still honest people who actually pay for their entertainment. Make a really reasonable deal with people, and most people will take it and not leave it.
