Bird flu and capacity armageddon
(old news - 09:19AM Tuesday Feb 13 2007)
tags: business · bandwidth · world · Oddities
Whether it's the fault of network neutrality advocates or video demand, it seems that everything these days is going to "choke the Internet," or result in some kind of insurmountable bandwidth crunch (despite ramped up investment). The latest bandwidth apocalypse fear comes courtesy of Slashdot and Computer World, who proclaim that a bird flu pandemic would lead to -- you got it -- a worldwide bandwidth meltdown. Apparently, so many people would suddenly be working from home and using the Internet that networks would all struggle under the load. The result, claims Computerworld, would be voluntary and then government-mandated bandwidth rationing.

LOL

Ya right ! VPN is nothing compared with the ammount of bandwith a torrent consumes.

Now if you'll excuse me, i'm off to downloading some HD-DVD rips. I hear they finally found the first "universal" key

While i agree that something like a..

pandemic would shift a lot of network usage to residential ISP's (torching comcast, at&t, etc, and the news sites), I don't think it would cause a total meltdown.

I'd be more worried about the effects on the transportation industry. In a just-in-time inventory world, hospitals and every other sector would begin hurting in short order if ships, docks, and trucks stop moving.

This makes sense

In the event that we all realized we only had a few days before we all died a slow and agonizing death, people everywhere will be in need of porn. Going to the video store will not be possible. Porn will be obtain via online access. The government may need to ration porn out to make sure there is enough to go around.

Re: This makes sense

No no that would be your Whack-n-Chit card. And for every time you are caught not maintaining arms length radius around you for safety, a corner will be removed.

If all corners are removed your whack-n-privilege would be revoked.

LOL it's a scouting thing.

See the deal is that you would get this card (actually I remember two), one was the Totin' Chip (just looked it up again and that's how they print it...funny I didn't remember it that way) and the other the Firem'n Chit card.

The first was for carrying and using a knife, and the other to build & start campfires, carry matches etc. They basically went to the fact that you understand your responsibilities in doing so etc etc. If you were caught violating those rules, a superior (patrol leader, adult leader etc) would cut off a corner of the card. When all four were gone, you lost those privileges.

The Market will decide

Seems to me that to use only half the capacity of any marketable product would be counter productive to the idea of capitalism-unless of course if a company was to slow production of it's product or service (or infrastructure) in order to cause a shortage of such product (or infrastructure) for the reason to raise prices. Just sell what you have and expand production (or infrastructure)

...

Instead of saying something stupid as "choke the internet" why not let the mass media call it by what it is?

Or better said is it even possible to choke the "internet" if I remember correctly there are more than several pipe's connecting to different peer's even for consumers themselves. Just because NY is suffering from massive data transmission where ping times soar and there is simply not enough capacity to meet demand anyone whose not going through NYC will still have fast access to the internet.

This worry is all idiocy and the only thing that could be a problem is transatlantic connections connecting two continent's by a few strand's of fiber. Please don't bring slashdot's crap or digg's doodoo butter over here, I left those places for a reason.

Nothing new......

I have said this for years especially with the "caps" floating around the discussion boards.

"You can do this with high speed internet" seems to be the key selling point yet do it too much and you get cut off.

Didn't the industry use to say there is no need for more bandwidth. There is no killer app to drive the need for more bandwidth. Oh yeah isn't there all kinds of dark fiber to. Well let's light up that dark fiber if the internet is starting to choke.

That was before the battle over the control (Net Neutrality) of what you watch and how many times you have to pay for it in the path from there to here.

here we go with this crap again

so does this mean that everyone will lock themselves indoors and download porn or steal HD movies. How the hell would "working" from home choke the internet. Sounds like more bullshit to me.

This must be a joke.

First, a flue like the bird flue, kills people. They can't breathe and lay in bed with tubes in many orifices. Second, how is the guy that washes car windows on the corned going to do that by computer.
