| Business Reality I think this offering just reflects a reaction to how the broadband business needs to react to the top .01% of users that are sharing 7x24 100% bandwidth with (sometimes for-profit third party) P2P services.
If 99.99% of Rogers customer base uses xxG of traffic and a small minority shares a TB drive to the world, should they sit back and take a loss from this customer or put in a price structure which correlates to what they pay / Mb when used 100% of the time?

| Re: Business Reality I think it's a perfectly reasonable scheme, and the fact that they tell you about it up front is a breath of fresh air.
The only way I see trouble, is if you aren't notified when you are getting close to your cap, AND when you have gone over and are now being charged. Can you imagine getting a $300 internet bill? 90GBs should be plenty on a monthly basis. I do think the initial $99 price is a bit high.

They are one of, if not THE most expensive slipshod providers out there.
They have cut back actual services while dropping cost increases on the subscriber base on an ongoaing basis.
They throttle, they block and do everything else under the sun you can think of that is shady, underhanded or just plain ignorant and mean and some you didn't or wouldn't think of.

I don't think it would have killed them to offer 10GB more/month. It'd make for a nice round number.
Also, if I'm dropping near $100 / month, either let me use my own modem and pay a small onetime fee to a tech to ensure the signals are correct, or waive the rental.
I can only hope that over time, the other tiers will either a) drop in price as more and more speed tiers are released, or b) increase the maximum bandwidth for the older tiers .

Yes they enforce it by hitting you with a bill that would knock your eyeballs out of your eyeball sockets. Many lose their house and car. Few have the resources to fight it in court. Bell has crafty lawyers. A good part of the bell budget is spent on lawyers because the mainstay of the company is see what we can pull on the subscribers next and see if they can still win in court.

It's funny Canada could boost back in the day who they were ahead of the US when it comes to the net now it's going behind.
Guess that is what happens when unless you live in the right area you got two picks for high speed internet. Rogers gives you a so called 100GB so they're saying we don't care if you use it all so just enforce the fucker and let the users do WTF they want with that 100GB.
What I want to know is why are they doing it being as you don't have many laws here for music and movies like in the US are they getting paid by the MPAA or RIAA or something?
I'd love to know who this speed is aimed out. Very few sites even ones where you have to pay to use very seldom give you speeds over 300KB.

| Giving more in the wrong way. I have a cousin who works for Rogers and currently has the 18mbps in his home. It's fast but do we really need it? To me, this is nothing more then a way to gouge the heavy users. We all know that 6mpbs is more then enough. Besides, why would you want 18mbps with only 800kbps upload? Rogers and every other ISP needs to realise that we won't need more download bandwith. It's the upload we need now. Stop dropping the ball, Rogers. It's getting pretty flat. -- ----gg's and happy gaming---- | |

| Rogers....has caps...throttle BitTorrent traffic Shortened the subject so it'd fit.
That's all I need to know. I don't care if it's 1000/1000, I don't care if it's 1 ms ping to anyplace in the world - that's all I need to know.
If we can up our bandwidth with some limitations, why bother even making progress? Why bother upgrading our network, when we can just raise the speed and throttle BT. Then if our competition raises their speeds, we'll raise ours even more and put an invisible cap in + send out abuse notices. Abuse notices'll cause customers to blame other customers instead of the weak network we use. Then the competition raises their speeds once more, so we do the same, but this time we add a 300 GB/month cap in and throttle bittorrent a bit more. Then when it's time to up the ante once more to get that number 18, let's put in a 100 gig cap and throttle BT more, and send out more abuse notice.
Keep going down this road and in five years we'll have 50/50 for everyone but it'll be limited to one or two gigs a month. Imagine if they offer IPTV, you'll get abuse notices when you keep the TV on as you fall asleep!
A 9000 wpc amp that won't drive a 3 ohm speaker, to me is useless, I'd rather have a 30 wpc one that will work with a 3 ohms speaker. A 550 watt rosewill PSU is useless, I'd much rather have a 350 one from enermax or fortron that delivers stable voltage under heavy load, that's rated to 50c. A subwoofer with a maximum output of 140 dB @ 60 hz @ 1 meter that can barely do 19 hz is useless.
You see where I'm going here? It's a numbers game, let's get the highest numbers so we appear to be the best. Unfortunately, we have the same(if not less) resources than the other guy, we just choose to cheat, which is why we can get the high numbers.
I'm sick of this nonsense. I don't expect full honesty, but this is ridiculous. Even if you upfront say you have a low cap and throttle BT, it's still nonsense to me. Don't offer ridiculous speeds like 18 mbps unless you have the network to deliver it in a way where I can use it more than I used my 3000/768 DSL connection. That DSL was able to run bittorrent for a week at a time, which allowed me to _upload_ 200 gigs a month(let's not even get into downloads). -- The Problem With Music.

I see you upload 200 gigabytes in a good month. Well for a Canadian a good month is when they upload 200 kilobytes while using the P2P programs that month. These Canadians should be bounced and blacklisted from all P2P programs. They are a disgrace to the world of file sharing.

| Re: Rogers....has caps...throttle BitTorrent traffic I don't upload 200 gigs anymore, I upload 500-600. FIOS is a godsend.
I also don't use P2P anymore. P2P is for chumps.
On an FTP, on usenet, one high bandwidth source gets a file and it's available for everyone. On P2P, everyone has to chime in and reupload the file, wasting bandwidth, and it's still tons slower.
Just ask people like twizlar , canadians can fileshare better than most - just because it isn't public doesn't mean it isn't there.
Just because you partake in illegal activities and don't mind doing so publically where any tom mediasentry and joe baytsp can download off of you doesn't mean others should have to as well. It's not selfish to leech, it's selfish to expect others to join you in yelling "hey world, I'm infringing on copyrights - here's my IP address, here's the proof, come and sue me.." -- The Problem With Music.
