Los Angeles Citywide Wi-Fi
Largest network in terms of people served
The city of Los Angeles this week announced (also see MuniWireless) their plans to offer citywide Wi-Fi. Few details are available at this point, as the city has only hired an expert to determine the best course of action, with early rough estimates of $40 million to cover the city's 470 square miles. The city wants a public-private partnership and would be seeking bids as early as this fall. The LA network would be the largest in terms of people served (4m), while Houston's Wi-Fi network (announced yesterday) would be the largest geographically, at 600 square miles.

$40 000 000 ??????????????????????? Shiiiiiiiiii

Thats way way excessive.

Muniwireless was suppose to bring costs down because it doesn't use fiber. At those distances wouldn't a total wireless system like wimax make more sense ?

I sense somebody is price inflating.

Everything in Los Angeles is overpriced...
First you have to have the $$$ lawyers
Then you have your 'preferred' contractor which charges 5x more than it should be.

Philadelphia is the same way. We've been promised citywide wifi for 2 years and we got nothing.

Meanwhile, Philly wastes money on wifi consultants and the murder rate soars because we don't have enough cops on the street.

Los Angeles is a VERY spread out city

Before people start quoting $40M as overpriced, you should realize that Los Angeles terrain is not flat. LA has mountains (3000-5000 ft) and valleys (i.e. San Fernando Valley) all withing its space. It was a challenge to get cell coverage going and there are still spots where it is tough and/or unavailable.

IMHO they are going to need a lot of towers; whether $40M is the right number or not remains to be seen.

Re: Los Angeles is a VERY spread out city

As a Los Angelino, I must give an empathetic "Woo Woo!!"

And then I let the fact that we're talking about something that.... 10-1 will not happen for many years to come. So many in fact, that I believe EVDO and the like will have all but eliminated the necessity/convenience of city wide Wifi. Now indeed, it would certainly be a leap in the right direction in eliminating what remains of the digital divide but with low-end DSL being offered @ 14.95 as it stands now, I can only assume that we'll see it go down further by the time this would ever have a chance to go live.

With all that said though, I'd love to have a decent speed alternative wireless internet solution in the city. You can never have too much internets surrounding you. Just imagine an entire city understanding the "O RLY" owl :P

Great Pic!

Love the Jack Webb -- "Dragnet" reference. They're gonna need him to separate the facts from the malarkey in the proposals

Hardy har har. They won't even have started by 2009!! This is LA, where the wheels grind slowly. Hee hee hee, ha ha ha!!

LA Citywide WIFI. That's almost as big a joke as the LA City Council, not to mention Mayor Antonia VivaLaRaza.

Snicker snicker....

Not the largest network - Wireless Oakland (Oakland Co., MI)

You could say Houston is the largest planned citywide network in terms of coverage area and be correct. However, Wireless Oakland in Oakland County, Michigan (north of Detroit) plans to cover all 910 square miles of the county (1.2 Million residents).
