So far largely a no show in the first....

While a recent report may have suggested that WiMax will remain a 'niche' technology for the time being, Motorola (a key financial supporter of the technology) insists it can help bridge the broadband divide in developing nations. "DSL just does not exist in Africa," says Stefano Mattiello, Motorola's regional sales director for sub-Saharan Africa. "And I can guarantee you one thing: People are not going to start digging up the countryside to lay fiber." Of course those same areas are already quickly gobbling up 3G services for those same reasons. Of course we're still waiting on the technology to be a DSL and cable competitor here in the first world, as so many promised.

Insanely stupid

I can guarentee you one thing - People aren't going to start using computers any time soon in 95% of Africa. They have other problems. Such as - Finding water.

Re: Insanely stupid

Almost all of Africa is civilized. There is however a difference between that and the common person having the resources to even afford a computer in the first place.

Re: Insanely stupid

Time to define the word "civilized". Also do we define it by population or land mass size? Is Zimbabwe under Mugabe civilized? Is South Africa civilized? Is Somalia i.e. Darfur "civilized".

I guess I live in a third world country now. I would love wimax at my home in rural Mississippi.

But don't you dare say anything about the big, bad government stepping in and getting all those magnificently deregulated telcos to maybe act like the US is the First World. My ghod, you would be suggesting that some poor CEO's scion won't get a Lambo for his high school graduation. That would most certainly rip the frabric of this great nation asunder.

Why should the government be involved? It was not established to handle such matters.
