Fon Targets Starbucks
While firmware flashers gleefully erode Fon's business model
by Karl Bode Wednesday 21-Feb-2007 tags: business · wireless
We've already discussed Fon's business model at length, so if you're unfamiliar with them, check out their website or previous stories. Fresh off their 10,000 Wi-Fi router giveaway, and their giveaway to any Manhattan residents who had street-facing apartments, the company has a new plan: give away free routers to anybody who lives within range of a Starbucks. The hope is that Wi-Fi users will shell out $2 for a day's worth of Fon instead of giving money to Starbucks.

If you're looking for something to bet on, Fon's bankruptcy date may be a good choice -- it's not clear how long the company plans to continue these giveaways, nor is it clear their offerings can compete with existing (free & pay) hotspots or other wireless services. Their business model certainly isn't helped by the fact that their service violates most ISPs terms of service. It also probably isn't helped when our users sign up for the free routers, then flash the units with third party firmware.

Their demise at the hands of starbucks.

That little starbucks looking logo on their site and router are going to get them sued out of existence.

Not to mention running a fon router violates every isps tems of service , I can't see why anyone would want to take the risk of losing thier isp or criminal acts on thier account. I give them 6 months to be out of business.

Google is a major investor in FON as is Nicklas Zennstrom and Janus Friss so I don't see them going off the radar very soon .

a bit difficult to cancel your account...

This article reminded me of an old account I have with Fon and decided to cancel it because I've never used their service.
Today I logged in, read the FAQ and was instructed to send an email to delete the account, this is the response I got back:

Dear user,

We have received your request to delete or cancel your personal data from our systems.
In order to perform your request, you can use the following procedures:

1. You can send us a letter or burofax to our office:

FON-Legal Department
Avd. Bruselas 7, 3rd floor
28100 Alcobendas (Madrid)
Spain

2. Or reply to this email (do not write a new one).

You must specify and attach the following information:
- FON Username (email account)
- Name and surname.
- Copy (scanned if sent by email) of your identity card or equivalent document.
- Your detailed request.
- Your postal address.
- Date and signature.

Bear in mind that we need this information to ensure your request complies with our Privacy Policy. In addition, this is a legal requirement.
You should be aware that you may have a FON router subject to certain conditions, a FON daily pass which is still valid or some pending balanceon your Piggy Bank.

If you fall under any of these above mentioned cases please send us back the FON router or pass it to somebody else (send us these new contact details), use your FON daily pass or get more than $€30 on your Piggy Bank before we delete your data, as we will not be able to know who you are anymore.

Free routers

I think next time a free router deal comes up, I want to order them and just use them as wireless APs around the house, so I can get a stronger signal.

10K routers

I wonder what percentage of these routers are reflashed and on ebay the day they're received.

Re: 10K routers

The problem I have multiple problems with a Fon wifi spot. First, I don't have any assurance about the quality of the bandwith. TMobile's price is high, but they typically don't split a single 1 meg down ADSL connection sixteen ways. Fon is happy to do that, reserving half the 1 meg for the home owner. Second, Fon actively encouarges roving hotspots. Got a laptop with an EVDO card and twenty minutes between flights. No problem, Boston can have a new hotspot for those twenty minutes. Imagine the guy who buys a day as you are already hitting the shutdown sequence! Third, Fon is crying out for man in the middle attacks. Every airport has those free-wifi displays. Just how hard would it be to become a "legitimate" Fon service and patch into it. They are already offering soft-ap programs for Mac.

Well..

Most users aren't going to know or even want to reflash the router. They get free wireless for their house, and they don't care. The number of people reflashing the routers is pretty small compared to the number of people actually getting them... at least I would assume as much.

just a funny thought.

Rural customers who are too distant from anyone being able to use this thing should go sign up for one of these and get a free router. They could be a sharer or whatever FON calls them so that when they go abroad they can use the other FON routers out there.
