Houston Company Launches FTTHFision triple play finally arrives ( old news - 03:46PM Thursday Feb 22 2007) tags: Fiber · coverage · bandwidth · TVIPOEN, based in Houston, Texas, has announced that they've finally launched their long-promised triple-play service in Houston. Dubbed Fision, the bundle includes symmetrical fiber at 10Mbps, 400 IPTV channels (40 HD) and VoIP. Their website (which lacks price details; we've inquired) says they'll offer up to 100Mbps. This report, which notes they've found gamers think 15Mbps is the sweet spot, has more detail. The deployment area looks pretty limited, with just 20,000 homes targeted by year's end, a far cry from the 1.8 million referenced when they first announced the project back in 2005. Houston is the nation's tenth largest TV market.

FISION is like sega's set top box. FISION is like the Rio Chroma MP3 player. FISION is like firmware for ID3 tag databases on the iAudio X5. FISION is nonsensical vaporware that'll never be served to everyone.
When you hire people like CO_Chris posting "pic's"(not pics - pic's) of FISION, you can only expect so much. As can be seen here »fision Internet/ tv / Dig phone it took nearly a year after the service was supposed to be deployed to 1.3-1.8 million people to get proof it existed!
FISION was good for a free t-shirt, and nothing more.

What kind of nonsense is that? 15 mbps for gaming? You can game just fine on 1.5/384, it's all about the latency. You can even host a game on 5/2 mbps, with good latency, maybe much less.

The other thing about this fizzle service is, and I'm going to bet, it's alot like most smaller operations. It most likely comes with a small cap (SureWest, one of the first fiber to the home services in the country from WinFirst now Roseville Telephone Co aka Surewest, is 40gig monthly - Woohoo!)
15mb is the gamers sweet spot? How about good latency at 56k? But I see you already mentioned that.. just wanting to basically agree with you.
And... no phone number? You have to communicate through a website webform? Do I live there? No... am I pointing out some obvious bull? Yes.

| I read that SureWest has recently raised the cap on their 20 and 50Mbps speeds to more reasonable levels. And I also speak from experience when I say that they don't monitor the usage (atleast in my area) whatsoever. I think they have these bandwidth caps in place so that if they have a trouble customer, Surewest will have something in writing that allows them to charge more or suspend service if necessary. | |

Surewest bandwidth thresholds
1/1 = 30GB
10/10 = 75GB
20/20 = 150GB
50/50 = 400GB
Everytime so far I've seen someone go past the quota is because they had a worm/virus on their system causing a lot of traffic. If you're downloading 75gigs a month you're likely doing file sharing/porn anyways. Granted, I know there's ways to shatter it such as VPN'ing on a daily basis pushing huge files around or streaming HD video. The reality is that's usually not what actually happens.
I hate caps too, especially the invisible Comcast one I have on my home connection. Not defending them outright, but they do serve a purpose. | |

There is no point to fiber with those caps. None. Why do I want a cap I can blow through in one day? What use is this to me?
If caps don't exist for 3 mbps DSL - if they exist but hidden around 300-400 GB for cable down, and 30 for 6-8 mbps cable up - if they exist at 60-200 GB for fiber at 10-30 mbps, then are we really advancing, or are we just tipping the see-saw a little so we can raise the numbers that people want to see? Is any progress being made if we lower the cap each time we up the bandwidth?
At this rate, by 2020, all Americans will have FTTH 100/100 and receive abuse letters for opening an animated greeting card in their email.

You're right, they do. In a magazine ad, in a TV commercial, they can say "OMG WE HAVE 20/20 MBPS INTERNET AND THE COMPETITOR CABLE ONLY HAS 6/768, COME TO US WE ARE THE FASTAR!11", only to mislead people into thinking their service isn't the same shit as comcast, just tilted. In the end, it doesn't really matter to me - personally, I don't care. As long as they don't cause problems for other customers I'm personally fine with it. I also pointed out I realize customers with high usage aren't always doing those activities though they are not the majority. There's a good chunk of them that just had their machines compromised by a trojan/worm/etc even.
As far "if people like you had influence in development of them fifty years ago, it'd be a scary world..." is going a little overboard. If I had any choice about it everyone would have the choice to have FTTH, caps would be extremely generous if they had to exist, and net neutrality would be a reality. Maybe a little more kicking of Microsoft in the butt too, but can't have everything. | |

You don't often see dsl/cable companies with symmetrical speeds. And since it's symmetrical that means you can most likely download at 10mbit while uploading at 10mbit for a total of 20mbits. IMO, I'd rather have 10/10 than 15/2 for example.

Being I can't get dsl or cable I pay 100 for just 128k internet, so 100 for 10/10 would be a bargain. But I've read earlier they'd sell 10/10 alone for around 40-60, that's a damn good deal IMO. | |
