Comcast Testing 'Economy' Tier?
384kbps symmetrical for $25
by Karl Bode 06:38PM Monday Feb 26 2007
Users in our Comcast forum have spotted a new Comcast "economy tier" that offers symmetrical 384kbps speed for $24.95 a month. According to a Comcast tech who posts to the thread, it's only being tested by Comcast in select markets. Many cable providers do offer "Lite" tiers, but don't advertise them -- instead only offering them to customers who threaten to terminate their connections because of high prices. The fear among cable executives is that if the tiers are advertised, they'll cannibalize the profit made on more expensive tiers. At $25 for 384kbps, those customers would obviously be better served getting a cheap incumbent DSL line.
