| Re: Let me guess... would you Directivo owners quit bitching about that box. That box is DEAD. Yes it was SOOOO wonderful back in 2001 (or whenever it was) but Tivo and DirecTV have parted ways. that box didn't even use TiVo encoders, so from TiVos perspective it really can't help that box when it doesnt have control of all the software functions. | |

Even when it was current, even when DirecTV and TiVO hadn't parted ways, it was still dead in the water. No (offical) network support and very delayed software updates. And the stupid phone line requirement you couldnt even ACTIVATE the box to record without a phone line (fixed with a hack, however). -- Am Heimcomputer sitz' ich hier, und programmier' die Zukunft mir

i'm so sick of hearing about DirecTiVo. I once asked a guy if he slept with his more than his wife. DirecTV itself is trash, I cant see TiVo helping that much.

| Yep, I agree, that stinks Jon. Inteller, Directv is NOT trash, maybe you don't like them (for whatever reason, none that I can think of), but millions of us do. I'll take their service over cable's anyday, if it wasn't for only being able to get HSI through Comcast (formerly Adelphia here), we'd be done with the cable companies completely. | |

| PC's the future of DVR's? I am guessing that if TiVO goes away, than what we will have left is what ReplayTV has done...go as software on PC's.
Aside from those with cable, fios, or a satellite dvr, I guess a PC will become the only other way of having a dvr? (Which can actually be good for both expandability and the fact you aren't forced to watch annoying ads when you fast foward or rewind).

If Windows MCE would make it EASY to record from firewire off the cable box that would be the ultimate solution. From my unterstanding, those PC cards will be out sometime this year (someone correct me if I stated this too soon).
But the first generation is receiving only, and not sending information (meaning that you can get the channels you subscribe to, but you don't get a channel guide or the ability to use pay per view or on demand).
The second generation, which I believe it due out next year? (again, someone correct me if I have my timeframe wrong), will communicate both ways, so you will get your channels, channel guide, and can use pay per view and on demand.

| the question is why? Why in the world would anyone want to pay $1.99 for something that the Tivo will record for free. And to add insult to the injury, you can't even burn that TV show to a DVD?
The fact of the matter, is the corporation is trying to nickle and dime everyone to death. To start, they charge 50.00 a month (600/year) just to WATCH the TV Shows. Then they believe that you should pay 2.00 per episode, (48.00/year), then another 50.00 to buy the series on DVD when it comes out. That comes out to almost 700.00/year for 1 TV show. And another 100.00/year for each additional show?
That's just crazy. Better to spend 50.00/month for a high speed connection, and download all your TV shows. You can get ANY tv show, and the only cost is your internet connection. -- Stick it to the MAN. Support your local torrent sites. A couple of movies? No. I download movies occasionally... don't even break 35GB per month! No chance of me getting "The Letter" or "The Call" from Comcast. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera

| Whats the real appeal here? I never fully jumped into the Tivo bandwagon I guess. I had both a series 1 (mostly to tinker with, upgraded the drive, added some services, etc..) and a series 2 (got a good deal for a dvd/combo with free basic service). Aside from the convenience factor everything else was limited and/or done poorly. The quality was lame across the board, lifetime subscriptions are dead (sorry perpetual fee based service for what a guide menu and a timer?), difficulty in stb linking (not entirely their fault but some fairly obvious oversights in blaster codes were), and the general obfiscation of all the inner workings to prevent custom use.
Now they give you the option of the same faults only now you get to pay the same price as a dvd for less quality and no way to keep what you've paid for if you discontinue tivo.
I gotta wonder how low people will let their standard go for the sake of convenience. MythTV/Netflix keep me entertained in higher quality, with more options for less money.

| just the tip of the iceberg?
Understand the comments on the current service, but it is just the start, and Amazon and TiVo have proven that they should not be taken lightly. In fact, to really speculate, this could just be the tip of the iceberg - discussed over at NextBlitz:

| Don't trust earthlink Since October 2006, I have been waiting for my refund from Earthlink.Everytime I call them, they say " We send it,and it came back, please confirm your address." But then what they do is send me a bill, AND I DON'T HAVE A N ACCOUNT WITH THEM.. It's June 2007 and still they have not send me my refund. I regret paying my bill earlier. If it was the other way, that I owed them it would it gone to my credit report, but I guess companies can get away from it. Dont get services with Earthlink, they are not honest. Custumer Service people are not professional.
