Shifts from just utility network to residential broadband
(old news - 01:42PM Thursday Mar 08 2007)
tags: wireless · municipal
Earthlink says they've struck another municipal Wi-Fi deal, this time with Corpus Christi, Texas. In this case, Earthlink will take ownership of an already built city network that has been used for everything from emergency communications to meter reading. As with the company's other citywide Wi-Fi projects, users will get symmetrical 1Mbps broadband for around $20 a month, and the network will be opened to other ISPs to provide service.

Open Access

Their "open" wholesale model is interesting. Its them and DirecTV. Shouldn't by now more ISPs join on and sell services?

All free things eventually come to an end.

Wondered when they would start charging for it's use. 20 dollars a month isn't bad if they can increase it's accessibility.

Hopefully this will turn out better than what happened with the system we had for free dial-up.
