2,000 square miles of wireless broadband
(old news - 12:08PM Tuesday Mar 13 2007)
tags: competition · business · wireless · municipal
William e-mails us this article in the Miami Herald that explores Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez's plans to build a $75 million, 2,000-square-mile wireless broadband network. "Sometimes I wake up at three o'clock in the morning and say, `How the heck am I going to do this thing?'" says Ira Feuer, the mayor's top technology advisor and project architect. An incumbent lobbied state law prevents the county from owning the network unless they give the service away for free, but that's not plausible given the county size. Instead, Alvarez wants to create a nonprofit corporation to oversee the project, which he promises won't use taxpayer money.

Homestead already has...

Homestead already has a wireless broadband provider so they could hook up with them.

I live in the deep south of Dade County (I still refuse to have Miami attached to the name). Since we have streets that go to 600+ and avenues that are 400+, I really don't see this happening for the rural folks. Most plant nurseries have built their own. Costa Farms is a great example. They must have 10-15 different sites spread in about 100 square miles, yet they are all connected. It is pretty amazing.

Well, I give our Mayor, a good luck and I think this project will out live all of us.

So.....

No plan, no spectrum, no money and no major private business interest to this point. This is just a monkey see monkey do by the mayor who has had round table discussions about this for about a year now with no real progress. If the Miami Beach project (only 7 sq miles slated to be completed in summer 2006....) is any indication as to the speed of progress this will happen somewhere around 2000 and never.

Maybe (not) one day we will get a slice of this pie in the sky, but dont trade your sunblock for the "$100 computer" just yet...

The No spectrum part maybe solved "Many wireless systems are hampered by radio interference, so Feuer wants to use a frequency that is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission and therefore more reliable. That frequency, however, is owned by the Miami-Dade School Board" As for the money part if they form a non-profit they maybe able to get receive loans, grants and etc.

city of Miami Beach network

I do finally see the antennas in my Miami Beach neighborhood, but am not picking up any signal, so I am assuming that they have not yet turned on the Miami Beach system.

WiFi

So lets get this str8....We want "free" wifi internet across Miami-Dade? So our kids in schools will be able to bring their notebooks and surf porn sites etc in the classroom?

As we know the School-Board of Miami-Dade County has a filtering system in place to protect our kids from this type of activity. So what is the school system going to do to stop this, since Miami-Dade County plans to install the access points at most of its schools.

Seems this is going to be a double edge sword.... I wonder what kind of security will be implemented.....

Ira Feuer is worried

Ira Feuer woke at 3 in the morning thinking how the heck he is going to do this project
I think he is more worried about chaining the towers so they won't steal them, they will get taking down as fast as they put the up for scarp metal.

I used to live there. when i was a kid got my bike stolen and when I was a teen got my car stolen. now when I make a trip to visit my family, I chain my wife now.

More important things...

How about spending time and money on more important things - such as creating efficient hurricane/disaster recovery plans, getting unlicensed drivers off the road, speeding up highway construction, addressing the growing population...

not going to happen...

this mayor is crazy. i live opposite of homestead, i'm actually 5 minutes away from broward county and i dont see this happening at all.. like the guy before me said, there is much more needed things to be fixed then trying to get everyone on wi-fi.. security on it will be so bad along with shared viruses, packet sniffers and password stealers, it will have to be shut down so much they to get rid of it they might as well not build it.

let people pay for their own internet. as much as free wifi is great, all the policies that go along with it are a pain in the ass. plus all these kids using myspace/youtube/p2p is going to kill the network.

this really is a bad step in the wrong direction for such a large county and clearly not enough thought has gone into the expense and the plan.
